What brake dust?
What brake dust?
Boys and Girls, I have been schooled......
The OEM brake pads on the front wear great and stop our cars on a dime, but they make the wheels oh so messy!
I tried a product several years back that was branded as a Michelin product that supposedly made the brake dust magically disappear from the wheels. The only thing that disappeared faster was the $8 I paid for that garbage. I might as well have sprayed water on the wheels and let them dry. There was NO improvement.
Now ArmorAll has come out with a new product called Wheel Protectant. I saw a brief commercial on TV that looked promising and when I took a stroll over to Pep Boys to do some window shopping, there was this big display with a "buy one, get one free" sign above it. I have to admit I am not a big fan of ArmorAll products (dates back to the original vinyl formula that acted like coating the seats with butter to bake in the SoCal sun...ouch!) but hey, FREE always sounded good to me.
I normally use a little sponge wand to wipe away the dust that turns the front silver wheels grey after only 10 miles or so of driving. I followed the directions and cleaned the wheels than gave them a liberal spray of Wheel Protectant and WOW. Here it is almost 3 days later and about a 100 miles of driving and a few hard stops...the wheels look same as the rear wheels (not sprayed).
I could wipe the wheels off a bit but don't really have to. THIS STUFF ACTUALLY WORKS!

Re: What brake dust?
See you in St Louis and we can compare "notes". Just drove from LA to Flagstaff on the way to CAA. Mild dust, wheels still look silver not gray after 450 miles! I couldn't drive 5 miles without having gray wheels.

Re: What brake dust?
The rear pads are a different compound. The fronts get real dirty real fast. In the last two days I have driven 900 miles on the way to St Louis. Are the wheels spotless, NO! Are they real dirty, NO! Only slightly dirtier than the rears.
Normally after that much driving the wheels would be almost black, mine are still 95% silver.

Re: What brake dust?
Update.
Yeah there's dust on the wheels. I have to admit though that the amount of mess after 1100 - 1200 miles or so isn't too bad. As a matter of fact the "clumps" of brake dust that have formed do come off with ease. The bug pieces that managed to get stuck to the wheels also come off easily.
(Didn't clean the wheels yet, just did a test clean)
Should have done two wheels as mentioned for comparison. Oh well.
