Default Cutting SRT springs

I've decided to cut my springs and have a few questions for those that have done this already. Do you cut from the top or bottom. How can you be sure which is the top and which is the bottom? Can they be cut with a drill and cutting wheel? 1 coil is around 1 3/4 inches?

If I mess up I can always put the Eibach's back on, oh the horror!

the stock springs really dont have a top or bottom, as they arent progressive
A drill and cutting wheel wont do it, you need an angle grinder and a cutoff wheel at least.

I went 1 coil in the front and 1.5 in the rear iirc.

Les, I cut mine from the top. I am not sure about the markings, but I cut them as I took them out, so I knew where the top was. LOL I cut 1 full round out of each, and it was perfect. A drill will not work. Trust me I tried an electric drill with a cutting wheel. I just went out and bought me an angle grinder, and it went through them like butter.

You can see by the pic in my signature, the stance after cutting 1 round.

And actually, I am not sure if it really matters which end you cut them from as they are non progressive.

then i guess i went 1.25 in front, because im way lower than you.

dont forget to paint the end after you cut them, to prevent corrosion. I also put the end i cut into the spring pad, just so i wouldnt have any seating issues with the cut end against the control arm

LOL, I didn't realize that you had posted when I did Infinite. I guess I was just typing too slow and you posted while I was typing. LOL Yep, I put some rustoleum flat black paint on the cut end.

I cut them today. 1 coil on the rear springs and 3/4 coil on the front. I even put the rear ones in along with my new rotors and pads. The stock springs, even before cutting, are shorter than the Eibachs. I used a dot 3 pad and the car is 1/4 inch lower than with the Eibachs and dot 1 pad. How about some pictures of my afternoon? Don't you love the Puerto Rican organized work place.

Les do you mind if I ask which method you used to take out the front springs? I've tried both methods on the forum and it was so difficult I put the spring back in and didnt cut it because it was a nightmare and I didnt want to go through that with the other side, the back is easy but I just find it impossible with the front

I haven't done the front yet, just the rear. Because I'm not sure how long it will take me, I may wait until this weekend. I don't want to get started and not be able to finish. I'll let you know how much exercise my vocabulary gets.

The back is a hair higher than the front, but only a hair. (front is still on Eibachs with dot 5 pads) I only drove to the supermarket after finishing. (Thats where I took the picture) As I was driving down the street going over the potholes I was reminded of how it rode stock. So, it rides like a stock SRT, is 1 3/4" lower in the back with the dot 3 spring pads. The front springs may have to wait until the weekend. I hope I didn't cut the front ones too much. I would suggest cutting only 3/4 coil on the rear.
As far as the handling, it's really hard to tell. I usually wait until I'm at the track to push to the limit or past it. I prefer a timed event so the determination is the clock and not my ***.

I used the stock spring pads on mine with a full round cut out front and back.

With the Eibachs I had dot 5 on the front and dot 1 on the back.
As we speak I have dot 3 on the back with the cut springs and the Eibachs with dot 5 on the front. I'll be sure to let you know all the details when the front is finished. So far I'm liking the cut springs in the back. My buddy that cut the springs was careful not to get them too hot. If that happens the spring will loose tension. So cut with care, or lubrication.

yes that is true, thanks for reminding me about the heat thing.

bmorgan, thanks about the pad comment. i was thinking about using my stock ones as well. i am only looking for a small drop. i think 1/2" would be about right for me.

bob the thread you linked is how i did my fronts. let me say this is a biatch of a job!! the bushings if not aligned perfectly will hang and the bolts just refuse to come out or go back in. i adjusted the jack for at least 30 min per side to get tem back in place. BE WARNED! THIS IS NOT A EASY JOB

I agree it is not an easy job. I did my fronts on a Sunday, and the following day, I was talking to my neighbor from across the street. He asked me what I was doing to the car the day before. I told him, and he said with a laugh....... Well, you must have had one hell of a time with it, because I heard you huffing, puffing, cussing and fussing at the car all day. I didn't realized that I was that loud, but he certainly was right.

In retrospect though, I think it would be much easier if I had to do it again.

It is not easy, but with a second person to work the jack....getting the bolts back in gets much less frustrating!!
