Biggest tire's on OEM Limited Wheels
Biggest tire's on OEM Limited Wheels
Did a search did not come up with a POSITIVE answer...
Was thinking about going 225/40/18 and a 275/30/19...What is the biggest tire I can run on then factory OEM NA rims without having rubbing or clearence issues..ordering a new set and wanted to go bigger. Can the front be bigger than 225/40?

Re: Biggest tire's on OEM Limited Wheels
Ok after searching...which I got a LOT of different answers
Comfortable ride...235/40 in the front
275/35 in the rear
Not so comfortable 275/30 in the rear.
Live in East TN so not that much bad weather...some of the backroads you might see a pothole or two, but I drive mostly main Interstates and 4 lane's..

I don't know why more folks don't use this great tool:
http://www.rims-n-tires.com/rt_specs.jsp
It answers all of these questions! And it does it with pictures!
In front, the biggest problem is clearing the upper ball joint nut.
And in the rear, if you get too close to the inner tire well, you will rub it if you hit a large bump. But the OEM sizes do that.

I have this link saved but didn't think it would indicate the limits for clearance issues for our particular cars.

I KNOW somebody has... that site mostly shows UPGRADED wheel and tire packages. I was just in such a hurry because I was gonna order 2 sets of tires 1 set for the X-Fire and a set for my Wife's 540i.. Tire rack BTW DID NOT KNOW the answer either...I think I am just gonna go 275/35 R and 225/40 front...I wanted a 235/40 to get a little more rim protection on the sidewall. But I am afraid of clearence problems. Thanks VAL for sticking this!

Re: Biggest tire's on OEM Limited Wheels
I can tell you right now that I have the Khumo 18s you're talking about on the front of my car with aftermarket rims. The offset is 22 I think. Anyway, there is some rubbing when turning the car - the outside of the tire rubs on the wheel well noise suppressor (the plastic-like shroud that is directly behind the wheel in the wheel well). I've driven them about 5K and I don't believe it's wearing them down. Just thought you would want to know. I'd also like to hear how the 275s work.
Note that the Khumos are louder than the Michelin tires, handle better in snow, but slip a little more in summer driving. IMO.

Re: Biggest tire's on OEM Limited Wheels
I went up one aspect ratio front & rear.
I've had zero problems with the rear.
The only problem on the front is that on full-lock the tire rubs the inner plastic fender/cover at the front. When the wheels are turned right the left wheel rubs at the front - I think when I'm going both forward & reverse.
I am nut using spaces, but I imagine spacers would make the rubbing worse as the wheel would be further out/forward when on full-lock as described above. Plenty of clearance at the top to the threaded stub/bolt on the suspension piece.

Thank you for the reply's, so my theory is OK to go to 235 FRONT and 275 rear. I have been debating and just feel like I need a little more wheel protection up front with the 235's and WANT more meat on the back with the 275's.
