The question isn't just one of offset.
1) Clearing the front brake calipers.
and
2) Finding a 17" wheel/tire combination with about the right diameter to keep the speedometer accurate.
There may be other issues, but these are what came to mind.
I snagged an extra set of 18" rims for snow tires, but I've been toying with getting a set of 17" wheels and tires to reduce the rotational inertia of the big rims.
It seems that, at least for one year, if not more, the SLK32 came with 17" wheels all around, so I think that at least some 17" wheels have enough open space in the back to clear the rotors.
