Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
Hi
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.
My 2007 Crossfire Roadster has been sitting idle for quite some time and although it would start some of the electricals as detailed below were not working - The battery light was on so was diagnosed as alternator (battery is less than a year old and Halfords 'said' the battery was fine). They replaced the alternator and the battery light now out but has not fixed the electrics - the battery although showing 12.4 and 14.2 on the terminals was not showing the green light to say cells OK so I took it out and charged and then did a pulse repair - green light re-appeared and volts all 'seem' OK but still electronics not working.
I have now replaced all fuses I can think seem vaguely relevant to the symptoms but still no correction - I have the feeling it may be some kind of sensor related (boot sensor?) but the symptoms don't seem to match with each other for that sort of thing.
Symptoms are.
1. Roof wont open - when lifting manually for first step windows do go down - then press the button to lower (which is solid red at that point - not sure if it should be) and it just bleeps at me and light flashes
2. Central locking from fob doesnt work - it 'seems' to set the alarm so the lights flash correctly but no lock movement - note that the internal button does lock and unlock AOK so the actual mechanism is working
3. Roof light does not work either for manual turn on or for door open
4. Boot light doesnt work - in all honesty not at all sure that has worked or not for a while.
5. Air con doesn't work - fan blows but not getting cold.
From 'what I can tell' everything else is working AOK (although there may be something I have just missed that is also not working).
The voltage when running is at 14.2/3 from lighter (and slightly higher on terminals) so not sure if it is battery and if it was would it crank and the rest of the electronics work AOK?
Any help really appreciated - am miles away from any Chrysler garage so would really like to get a handle on what the heck is going on!
TIA
Dave

Update!
I think I have found at least part of the problem (although not the cause) - fuse 9 is blowing as soon as I reconnect the battery (obv with nothing running)
So thats the Roof Light, Horn, Anti Theft Alarm and trunk light - i will see if I can look at the roof and trunk lights but if a bulb was blown would that really cause a fuse to blow (and not sure what that has to do with air con and roof down etc)
TIA
--------------------------------------------------
Update 2 - boot light contact did fall apart in my hands but filament seemed OK, Roof light both bulbs filaments are fine. Have checked the Central Locking pump since I have seen that can cause all sorts of havoc - looks OK and runs the locks OK from the button in cabin.
With all of the above disconnected it still blows fuse 9 as soon as battery reconnected.
Hope someone can point me in the right direction.

Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
I would disconnect the siren under the windshield wiper Cowl. Then try a new fuse 9. The sirens batteries get old and leak on the circuit board causing all sorts of strange electrical problems in relation to fuse nine.
There is a great thread here on how to remove/disconnect it.
Me and my friend both had to replace our sirens for similar reasons.

Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
The fuse #9 on the 2004 are the interior lights etc, but are not on a 2007 it is for the Control Air Bag.
Fuse #13 is for the interior lights, trunk light, Tire pressure control, horn and anti-theft-alarm on the 2007.
Get your facts correct before you start diagnosing problems. The 2007 Owners Manual can be downloaded from this site, see the Documentation Collection. You can get to it in the thread referred to in my signature in red.
Good luck.
Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
Hi
Yes I am aware of that but I have got my facts right as far as the fuses are concerned - although it has a 2007 reg I think it must have been manufactured on the cusp - I did already download the 2007 fuse config and immediately noticed the config was wrong (I have nothing in 13 for example since that for water pump on SRT) - thankfully the fuse configuration is on a card in the fuse box so that cleared it up - 9 I am pretty sure is what I think it is or the card and other fuses are wrong!
Thanks for the thought tho!

Disconnect the alarm as noted, you can just unplug it. You can replace it with one like you have or pay more for one that beeps in sync with the flashing lights, that is popular here. It is not a irritating noise.
You are lucky the Chrysler dealer is miles away, they know nothing of these cars and will rob you blind for doing nothing. If you must find an independent garage that fixes Mercedes as it is a basic SLK320 astounding know.
Good luck, sort each problem on its own, do not throw parts at it hoping to fix it, do it logically.
Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
You say you have a 2007, the fuse numbers on it are different to the fuse numbers on a 2004.
The fuse #9 on the 2004 are the interior lights etc, but are not on a 2007 it is for the Control Air Bag.
Fuse #13 is for the interior lights, trunk light, Tire pressure control, horn and anti-theft-alarm on the 2007.

Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
That is not accurate it all depends on the fuse card under the hood, the owner's manual is not accurate either. I have seen two 2004 models that were built 6 months apart and the cards are way different. These tend to get wet easily so I recommend anyone to make a copy of the card or just put the copy under the hood fuse box. Mercedes vehicles you can order the card but of course with Chrysler that is not an option.
You are correct on the fuse card though, apologies to all.
Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
My bet is the CLP/SSM has been wet. (This is the central locking pump you mention above). Did you unplug EVERY connector and check for "green grungies"?
Almost all the symptoms you describe can be attributed to a bad CLP/SSM. That is, your items 1 to 4, but not 5, all can be caused by a bad CLP/SSM.

Re: Weird electrical problems, Roof, lights, locking etc
I don't consider that much of a correction. I feel the exact same way. You always act like the Crossfire assembly line expert or that you were there while they built them.

If you want a siren that chimes NeedsWings has them.
