replaced CPS, did the RCM repair, STILL shutting off.
Thanks for all the great info to assist me in my common issue of engine shutting off. I replaced the CPS, and sent the RCM to tighed1 for his upgrade and repair, and she left me on the side of the road yesterday again.
Any other fixes to suggest to my mechanic? Don't like it when he says "I'm going to have to research this issue".

Re: replaced CPS, did the RCM repair, STILL shutting off.
non-diesel engines stop for 3 reasons :
1. They broke something important internally.
2. they have no fuel.
3, they have no spark.
Next time it quits, see if it will crank over.
If it will, then unplug one of the plug wires at the coil pack and hold it close to the socket while trying to start. If you see spark, then you have a fuel problem. If not, then most likely a CPS connection or some other PTCM signal is bogus.
You can also see if fuel sprays out from the test port on the front of the fuel rail when you depress the Schrader valve. That will indicate you have fuel pressure.

Re: replaced CPS, did the RCM repair, STILL shutting off.
By chance does the radiator fan spin up really fast when the car cuts off?
Have a RCM in my hands now that checked out ok, but the owner says that the car cuts off once he drives a bit. Did the usual repairs and instead of mailing it back I stuck it in my car and drove it to work today. Got about 5 miles and she died. Fan spun up.
BAM! Engine control relay.
Will replace that tonight before returning to owner.

"Did you go to Autozone or NAPA and buy some generic off-the-shelf sensor? Or did you order the RIGHT PART?
Here is the RIGHT PART:
https://www.germanautosupply.com/sto...sensor-96.html
I have carried one for five years, when mine died, I put the spare in and ordered another. They are not easy to find locally - and this has come up several times before - those generic sensors do not ALWAYS work and they do not always NOT work - you just never know with them."

Try disconnecting the CPS, spray both the connector and the CPS with contact cleaner, let it dry and reconnect.
Another thing that might help is a SLIGHT twist on the 2 pins in the CPS connector, this will ensure a better contact from the connector.

Re: replaced CPS, did the RCM repair, STILL shutting off.
Hal; inquiring minds are trying to help...update please.
My first crank sensor change, in parking lot @ dusk, I broke the connector clip. Worked fine for a day or two, then stalled again. I think the connector worked itself a bit loose, maybe enough to cause a problem. After that, I installed a Bosch cps, making sure of a secure connection AND installed a new RCM for extra insurance. Just my 2 cents.
Thanks tighed1 for your efforts for all. I should send you my original RCM so I have a back-up.
