Throttle body removal/Issue solving
Throttle body removal/Issue solving
So I am going to tackle a project for a friend and I am needing to know exact steps for removing the throttle body, also does it require a new gasket if you take it off to clean it. Just looking for a PDf or list of steps here and tools needed as far as specialty torx sizes. thanks.
The issue we are exploring is: Idle surge, stalls some, and even has slight surging at speed. her car has 180K miles on it as well. Replaced the plugs and wires already. New MAf too. So i am bringing my airbox to see if the seal is no good on hers between the box and the MAf/throttlebody housing. Also going to check the tightness of the intake bolts to make sure those arent sucking in air. Planning on pulling a couple of the plugs to check for rich or lean mixture. Throttle body reset, and taking off the throttle body and cleaning it. Thinking maybe the carbon/exhaust gas build up is causing a sealing issue making the car choke itself out and not keep a nice rev. Other than the idle and surging the car has no knocks, valve noise, or blowing of smoke so these cars are truly built to last.
Bought a mid 90's merc c280 that had a case of not keeping idle well and running insanley rich, cleaned throttle body up and it fixed a ton of issues, narrowed it down to a bad MAF sensor that i need to order, so i plan on using process of deduction to solve her issue.
thanks
Any body who has PDF or written step by step prefer with pictures send a copy to zjoslyn13@gmail.com

Re: Throttle body removal/Issue solving
I wish I was home to try this, but what would happen if the EGR was stuck open?
I know a stuck CLOSED EGR makes the car peppy, less throttle delay - but you get a CEL code. Seems like the stuck OPEN EGR would give you a code as well - but again, IF it was stuck OPEN, what would it act like? I was thinkiing I could yank the electrical connector off mine and jumper the valve to battery - holding it open; then I could see how the car would act.
(Zach and I are talking about the same car....)

Good point. One more reason to keep the engine and tubing clean. It stays cooler and tends to crack less/later in life. Sitting on the back of the engine, it gets dirtier from road blow-up.
If this has failed, I understand it is a major issue. If I had one in-hand (not on my DD), I'll bet I could make a fix.
Oh, well.
