My dealership is useless!
My dealership is useless!
Gents,
I would appreciate some advice. I have a 2007 limited roadster that I have put 110000 miles on as of yesterday. The nearest dealership I can get to here south of Houston has kindly asked that I take my business elsewhere as they have openly admitted that they have no idea how to handle my car.
There are several lights that pop up on a regular basis. The longest occurring is an intermittent check engine light that is always linked to an air pump error. Looking at this forum as guest this seemed to be common issue related to the control relay so I have continued to confirm the check engine light is the air pump and then ignore it.
Second is the light bulb indicator, it appears when they headlights are switch on but NO ONE can figure out what bulb is out. Does anyone have a list of the bulbs in the car so I can find the darn thing by process of elimination?
Finally, I can't remember the official name of the dash light but the manual said it indicated an elevated fluid temp or level. I have had several oil changes and both the dealership and the NTB I stopped in tonight swear that all the fluid levels in the car seem fine and based on color etc none seem in need of a change. The light comes on while driving, relatively quickly when it's hot out (it gets over 100 here for a while every summer) and after 10-15 min of driving now that it's cooled off (70's). So it would seem to me that this is a temperature thing, which could make a fluid level rise if the fluid can expand enough, however the temp gauge has never elevated.
I am getting tired of no one being able to help diagnose my baby. Any advise would be appreciated!

Re: My dealership is useless!
Replace the Relay control module, if you don't know how to solder they're $120 +shipping at Rockauto.com
light bulbs include:
2 low beams
2 high beams
4 side markers
4 turn signals/hazard lights -same bulb but different circuits.
2 license plate lights
2 additional lights in head lights
2 Fog lights?
2 brake/tail lights - same bulb but two different circuits
When was the last time the coolant was flushed? It's probably dirty, a quick flush and then replace with a mixture of 70% water 30% coolant since it's so hot in Houston and maybe use an additive like Royal Purple's Purple Ice.
Let me know if you get anywhere with this.

Re: My dealership is useless!
I got about another 55k more than you on my srt6 so maybe I can shed some light. The RCM box has had a history of broken solder joints, however beyond that, some of the relay contacts may tend to burn up which can trigger some of the issues you are seeing. New units can be found online for around 200.00, scrap yards might get them to you for as little as 50.00 since they don't really know what they are.
At 110k you should be considering a few things: a complete suck out and flush of the coolant system including running some cleaner through there and adding in some water pump lubricant, and check the pulleys and belts for wear and proper tension.
The light bulb that has been the most problematic for me over the years is the rear license plate bulbs due to the fact that the panel that holds the wing routes water down to a set of holes next to the sockets. If someone has installed HID or low impedance bulbs in the headlights that too can trigger the dash light.

Re: My dealership is useless!
I agree with Selbyl.
The most likely culprit for the light out indicator is one of the license plate bulbs. It had me confused for days until I stumbled across it.
The fluid indicator - is it on the right side of the dash kind of at the top? Looks like an oil can? If so, and if you've checked your levels, my money would be on the sensor going bad. That sensor is located in the oil pan, so you would need to pull the pan to replace it. I have the same indication and I just ignore it since I don't want to spend the money on replacing the sensor. Last I checked, they were around $150 - $200 plus labor.
Also, you might try to find a Mercedes Benz dealer or an independent shop that specializes in European cars to wrench on it if you can't do it yourself. It being a Chrysler is in "badge" only. Chrysler dealers know very little about these little gems.

I'm a newbie, so take my comments with a good size grain of salt.
Since much, if not all, of the mechanical and electrical on the XF are the same as the Mercedes SLK320, for me, logic says to think of those aspects as not being Chrysler.
I suggest you look for a well qualified independent Mercedes shop. By pure chance I've lucked out in that my daughters long-time boyfriend is the head mechanic of one. He said that he'd had several XF's in the shop and apparently there wasn't anything mechanical or electrical on the cars that he couldn't handle. He did mention that the superchargers on the SRT6's have a tendency to go 'out;. I also have a Limited so that's not a problem for either of us.
Also by chance, I bought my 2007 Limited from a used car dealer in Carroliton.

Re: My dealership is useless!
Thank you so much for the fast replies! I just figured out I have a side marker out on the passenger side, thank you so much Infinity for the bulb list. I will be putting a new one in tomorrow to see if that fixes that problem at least.
To both of you, I am glad to know I was on the right track guessing I should try the coolant flush. I was scheduled to have one tonight, but the shop realized they needed special fluid, the story of Crossfire maintenance...
I will look into the RCP, while I have soldered majority of my practice is on stained glass so I will leave that to a professional.
Thanks so much!!! I should have registered for this site years ago. I have to admit, I am trying to resolve these issues so I can trade in my baby for a new Cherokee. I can't afford both and my girl deserves a rest from being used as a way to convey the spoils of home depot home improvement projects and garden center spoils. This is my second crossfire, I love this car. But I am listening to my Dad, turn this one in now, and buy another one later that has a third the miles. I am going to miss making the guys in suped up cars on the highway look ridiculous though....

But if you are talking of a yellow light, I'm unsure of which one you are talking about. Watch for it, does it come on in the left or right hand end of the panel? What does it look like?
We can go from there. If you need an owner's manual, click here and download one:

Re: My dealership is useless!
Shoot I should have asked this, where is the RCM located? I am a mechE and handy enough to get myself in trouble. I'd like to get to it to inspect the solder joints if its accessible.
And to stop being lazy I grabbed the manual..it's the coolant indicator light...one would think that would have been an obvious fix to the dealership. I just remembered that it was a fluid indicator that mean levels were off or temps too high. If I had pulled out the manual again to confirm the name of the light I could have had the coolant flushed a while ago...this is why I did not go into the auto industry.
