Default Can you use the AirCon as Source of Cold Air for Engine?

Has anyone tried using the chilled air from the air-con unit into the air filter, as source of providing the engine with cooler air?

I have given no thought to this (as might be very apparent from my question), but my initial concerns would be over the volume of the air, its pressure etc., but it would be at a low temperature.

I assume that the air-con filters the air anyway, so could you do away with the stock/K&Ns?

Since the air-con has a fan to blow the air, would it act like a turbo?

I think it is kind of like asking this.

Can you use a fan to move the blades on a windmill to produce electricity to power the fan?

If you use the air condtioners output to increase power why not just turn off the air to increase power?

I was hoping that by directing the cold air into the engine, you would gain more than you lose by having the air-con operating.

The exhausted hot air would need to be expelled.

From your response, and the fact that the car manufacturers do not do this, I was kinda expecting your response.

Its just that I cool my home PC with an air-con unit, venting the hot air outside. The effect on my PC means I can really overclock it, but my electricity bill is higher.

I thought it always 55-60 degrees over there?Just be glad you're not in the desert where it's 110+.

You already have cooler air!!

Does that mean that you get lower BHP as your air intake temperature is higher than our?

If so, how much does the ambient air temperature affect the engine power?

I was hoping to boost power from the engine by feeding it colder air than the ambient. It seems that hot air will reduce engine power (from another thread).

Default Cold Air System is scheduled for Generation 3 SVT Ford

SVT Ford Lightning - Generation 3 due out in 05/06 has a system that adds a reported 50 HP to the supercharged engine by redirecting A/C charged cold air directly into the intake track during high boost demands

It does not operate constantly, only when the tps reaches a specific voltage

Once the demand (i.e. drag strip run, stop light run) is over the system goes into a recharge mode and is ready for the next round of running

Concept is good, cool air, more dense, more power is a proven fact, if you can get the system to work when you need it

Good luck

Ray

If you wish to test cold air try when air temp is below 50 !Degrees

Sounds like this needs investigating. I'll see if I can dig out my old Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics books.....unless Lord Nikon could do something
