Default Engine code P0171 - Mass air flow sensor problems?

Hi all,

Been dealing with an issue and have been reading the forums trying to figure out as much as I can. Still having a persistent problem though. Here's my issue:

My check engine light is on - has been more or less since I bought the car in December 2010. I recently got two codes read: P0171 and P0106. The person at the auto store said that the P0106 was related to P0171. After doing research on here on P0171 - I've read that the issue could be caused by a dirty or bad mass air flow sensor, problems with old air filters, or even bad gas. I guess P0171 is apparently that my engine is running lean. I don't really notice any problem with the actual engine itself - I just need to light to go off so I can pass inspection.

A few days ago I did the following:

1.) Replaced the two air filters with new K&N filters.
2.) Removed the mass airflow sensor and cleaned it with CRC mass air flow sensor cleaner. I didn't have a screw to unscrew the part of the MAF where the connection plate is - so I just sprayed the cleaner through the "gate" and around into every part I could.
3. Disconnected the battery to reset the codes.

After driving a couple trips the check engine light is back on. I wanted to ask here what my next steps should be. I've always used premium gas in the car - so I think we can rule out the problem with the gas. I don't want to start spending hundreds of dollars to put in new parts (like a new MAF) if it's not going to take care of the problem. Any ideas? Was there a more thorough way to clean the MAF? Is replacing the fuel filter an option? Please help.

Update: Just went down to get my codes read again. Instead of the P0171 I am now getting the following:

P0106
P0102
P0112

From the looks of these - at least two of these can be related to the MAF, while P0112 is about the IAT. Interesting that P0171 is gone.

I just reset the codes again however, because I was worried that maybe a mistake I made caused some of these codes. After I cleaned the MAF I accidentally started the engine without the MAF plugged in. I had the engine running for about 60 seconds and realized my mistake - then shut it off and plugged it in. I'm thinking that maybe in that one minute of running the car like that the computer stored a problem code...

So as of now I will have to drive it to see when the CEL comes back on and what those codes are. I'll keep you all updated.

Hi newaustinite,

Did you ever get your P0171 and P0106 persistent problems fixed?? If so, please tell how? We have the P0106 code coming up dispite us first cleaning the MAF, & even replacing it - still getting P0106 & did get a P0171 code too at one point.

Car isn't used much nowadays - I wonder if that is related - but doesnt help.

Any suggestions from anyone very welcomed.

Thx a lot.

Cheers, Phil&Liz, Brisbane, Aust.

YOu cleand the MAF but P0106 is a MAP sensor indicator.

They are pretty easy to change, but I didn't think Australian cars had MAP sensors. But I could be wrong.
