100k miles on 2006 convertible, a bad idea?
100k miles on 2006 convertible, a bad idea?
I have found a bargain on a MANUAL 2006 with 100,000 miles on it.
So the guy did almost 20K miles each year, I still don't know whats going on with ownerships and title.
what should I expect? what kind of problems?
I heard that the crossfire manual gearbox is not good and might die after the 100K miles mark?
what should I expect from the engine? special expenses?
And the folding soft top? probably will make me problems?
thx.

There a are hundreds of threads on this forum that can answer nearly all your questions (better than I can) if you just use the "search" button.
I'll address a few.
The most often heard complaint about the manual gearbox in our cars, is usually about the "notchy" shift between 1st. and 2nd. gear. It usually seems to smooth out as the lubricant warms up in the tranny, and some feel it gets better with age (or they just get use to it). The car comes from the factory with ATF II, but most dealers replace it with synthetic motor oil when you take it in for transmssion service.
The transmission itself is stout enough to hold up behind a "stock" 3.2 Mercedes engine. As with any tranny, if it's abused, more than likely you will break something. But chances are the clutch will give out (under abuse) before the tranny. Next in line would be the differential or the rubber connectors on the Driveshaft, then the transmission.
Since your car has so many miles on it in such a short time, it probably has a lot of highway miles rather city miles. That should mean it's has been "shifted" far fewer time than many cars with less than 1/2 the miles than you have. In other words, it's probably not even close to being worn out.
Oil changes are a little expensive, but if you can do it yourself it will save you a lot of cash.
If the rear window in your top is original, it will eventually come loose, but it seems to happen sooner in warmer climates.
Like I said, do a search on any specific questions you have.
Good Luck with your car. Remember, mechanically, it a Mercedes, so you have lot's of miles left in it.

I test drove a base roadster this past fall with 122,000 on it - it shifted smoother than ANY Crossfire I've ever driven - and still would get up and GO like new.
But they wanted $10,990 for it and it was close to needing a top - I found a Graphite limited with 47,000 on it for $12,000 and went with that instead - but the point is, these transmissions (as far as I can determine) will loosen up and get smoother with age!!!

Re: 100k miles on 2006 convertible, a bad idea?
I would be interested to know what the "bargain" price is for this 2006. In my search for my Crossfire, I found 2005 base models (manual) with just 10,000 or 12,000 miles on them selling for arouind $13,000. At least one of them was a one-owner car with a transferrable 7 year/70,000 mile drivetrain warranty. I paid just $14,000 for my Limited with automatic, warranty and approximately 5000 miles on the odometer.
Based on my experience, I'd expect the car that you are considering to be worth $10,000 or less.

That type of driving sounds like mostly highway, which these cars thrive on. There's a forum member with an SRT6 with 175k and another with a n/a with 214k, and no major problems. The price should just reflect the high mileage. I would also ask for service records and get it inspected. I was putting 20-30k a winter on my Audi A6 and at 184k miles it is in excellent shape...but the key was doing the maintenance and not abusing it.

Though, at that mileage, you should see if they have a record of the transmission fluid having been changed. If no record, have them wither do the fluid change, or deduct the price of the fluid change after you get a price from a Mercedes shop.
