Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
......... We have three Crossfires over here with the 55 Kompressor which maybe too much and are very difficult to keep cool in the summer.......
The temps on my car are not very high. A little warmer than the 3.2NA but still around the half way mark on the gauge. Safe operating temps at all times and thats driving through all 4 seasons, ~12,000km (mostly summer months)
Just to let everyone know....

this above was a quote by Beaner, I think,, as my car runs very cool,, 97 degrees outside, car runs 189* , here in Souith Florida we have hot streets,,,you can fry an egg on the sidewalk so our car's have to overcome a lot more than just temp. most cars come to SF from up north and they overheat within a month or so. ,,then they get some of the antifreeze out of the system. and cool down.

Has the motor, ecu, etc been modified or is it a mostly stock 5.5?
Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
Hi BoilerUpXFire,
evil_deeds (who is the owner of the car) allowed me to attach the dyno diagram.
The max. power on the rear wheel is 259.2 DIN HP.
The max. torque is 511,2 Nm at 4.200 RPM
It's a stock AMG 5.5 from a CLS 55. No ECU, or other tuning.

Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
Hi all,
I have read all of this thread with much interest - the guys tackling these projects have enormous talent and determination to conquer these challenges.
I was wondering if anyone could advise or point me in the right direction for doing a V8 conversion into a different car. I have a 1964 Mercedes coupe that I wanted to put the driveline from a 2001 W220 S55 AMG into. However, whilst I now understand how the conversion was done in the crossfire, I don't know what ECu/computer problems I may encounter if trying to use the engine and trans, and possibly the rear end all together.
I am worried that I may end up with a case where the only people who can do the electrical wizardry are in the USA - and it is a little too far to transport the car over there if I get myself in trouble! We are not blessed with a wealth of smart people/customisers with Benz stuff in Australia, and I have just started a new business so I do not have the time to spend 2 years learning how to use the star computer program (in German, nonetheless!).
The donor car I was looking at was overseas, and customs won't let me bring the car in whole - the body has to be separate from the mechanicals, so freight costs will be high. I was wondering whether I just strip the mechanicls and key wiring/computers out and just ship them, without the body.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Again, kudo's to the pioneers of this transplant in the crossfire - it must be nice hearing the V8 roar!
Cheers, Drew

Maybe it would be easier if you take a driveline from an earlier v8 car that has no ABS/ESP/BAS etc.
Good luck and regards

Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
Thanks for the early replies. Hardware should be manageable I thiink - I would use the engine and trans and perhaps the rear end, but keep the stock front suspension. This has already been done before by Mechatronic - see Mechatronik W111 Coupe - European Car Magazine. Also google Car and Driver for a good video of the 3.5 versus a modern AMG. But theirs is a bit out of my price range!
My biggest worries are finding someone that can get the engine and trans and key talking. Would I also need to use the factory instruments? I have no idea.
I will PM Rudy and see where that goes - thanks.
I have already fitted an M116 450SE motor into my 1965 sedan, and could easily put a 500 or 560 M117 in the coupe but I was thinking of raising hte bar a bit!

Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
Hi Drew,
i know the Mechatronic guys. I'm living 10 miles away from their company. They really built up the cars from scratch. And what they do is to implant really everything from the donor car into the classic. Even the electronic. So these cars have ABS/ESP and so on. I think it's possible to transfer the KI electronics into your 1964 gauges.
I think a good start will be getting a workshop manual from the 2001 W220 S55 AMG donor. And learn about the CAN-bus elements and electonic control moduls in that car. So you'll understand how everything interacts. The next step would be to get into Star DAS. Hope that helps a little bit.

Re: V8 Crossfire Conversion Diary
Thanks you all,
I'm happy accopmlishing this hard work.
finally, all that time spent studying books, trying softwares, browsing websites, hunting for infos, waiting for spare parts, it has paid.
I wish you all feel the same rise of adrenaline that I had at the time I put Ignition On and the engine roars like a lyon.
Great thanks to you.
Karim.
