I have been having a blast today driving the car. I took it to Plano to have breakfast with some car firends and then to the car wash so it would look decent at the GTG latter this afternoon. Car is running beautiful and strong. I now have about 80 miles on the conversion and will put another 80 on today go to from the GTG. Videos and pictures should be up tonight.

Hey Bob, if it has been asked before, I don't remember reading it, but.... Do you have any idea how it would stack up against an SRT right now? I realize that is a tough and subjective question, but still curious. Also, do you think that the rear turbo will be next on the list? And, how long before you do the rear turbo. I think I would fly to Texas to get a ride in that!

I really don't know how it compares to the SRT but I have driven an SRT and to me the V8 feels much stronger off the line and driving around town. It is probably very similar at high speeds. The SRT has a little more peak power and the V8 has more torque. But the sound is WAAAAY different, It has a very deep sound that at first sounds kind of Euro exotic but changes to a more muscle car/Flow Master sound as the RPM's increase. Other member will probably have their own descriptions after the GTG today.

I think the next think I will do is blue top solenoids for the transmission. It really needs a firmer shift. Firming the shift will also increase the life of the transmission. I will probably go to an SRT or MB V8 trans as well. Then I will be going turbo but at some point I also want to change the rear end to a CLK55 with a Quaife differential.

I also just stuck the SRT-8 badge on and will see what the other members think today.

You think there will be enough room in there for the V8 transmission?

If I'm not mistaken they are all the 722.4 housings, all the same physical size.

The V6 and V8's use the 722.6 Transmission. i believe the V8 trans has a larger clutch pack. Having a light car can help. I did some very fun driving and a few luanches with no problem. the car is a handful with the traction control turned off. There were some video and lots of pictures taken today at the GTG. They should be posted soon.

Here is a link to the GTG thread where the pictures and video may soon be posted:

P.S. This swap would be a little easier on an SLK R170.

lantana, I may have that answer for you soon...I have a feeler out on the tranny to the engineer buddy I spoke about. He knows other engineers in the tranny business...soon as he gets back to me, I will let you know what I have found out about the mods we can do. Art, my buddy, worked for Allison transmission for 30 yrs, retired, now does consulting work for Jasper transmissions, but he is talking to someone about the 722.6 who does the design and build on them....Art has several patents of his own, but mostly on the MIAI Abrams tank...now there's a transmission...

For you old school guys...........just think of M-B's 722.x transmission like Chevy's TH350. They both work great(different levels of greatness) and are used in EVERYTHING they can put it into. As an example my Charger SRT-8 6.1l V8, Ram 1500 Hemi 5.7l V8 and Crossfire SRT-6 3.2l v6 all have 722 trannys as well as almost all M-B's(including 65AMGs and SLR).

PS Most of the really new/newer M-Bs have switched to the 7 speed transmission and I don't think(or really know) that that's a 722.

yes sir, you are correct, but I always ran a TH400, w/ B&M valve body, 3500 stall converter...I need that out of the 722.6...lol

While not ideal for bracket racing, I always ran a top loader, but if I had ran an automatic it would have been a C6 with the same mods you mention above. the nice thing about our transmissions is they are behind all the new hemi's. The Chrysler guys refer to this transmission as the NAG1 and there are plenty of companies working on beefed up versions. They are very strong and as mentioned above are also in the McLaren SLR.

I have been doing some checking and I believe the V6 n/a trans has a less stout clutch pack but other than that it is just as strong as any 722.6 My only complaint now is I really need a firmer shift. The easiest way to firm up the shifts is with the blue top solenoids. Companies like Southern hot Rod are building these to take any HP you can throw at it. I could also really use a posi. With the traction control off this car is a handful to launch and gets squirelly really easily. Here is something to consider:

My V8 Crossfire has a 3.95 first gear with a 3.27 rear end

SRT6 has a 3.59 first gear with a 3.07 rear end.

Texas T shot some good video today from inside and outside of the car which i hope he posts soon. He did a walk around while revving the engine and then one from inside the car while driving around and then one where i tried to launch the car in a closed down Bennigan's parking lot.

bmorgan to answer your question on how a SRT would go against the Merc V8 I think Lantana would need a fair few mods to keep up, when I was @ the track a few weeks ago I raced a SLK55 AMG 07' model and the guy was a pretty good driver and I beat him by a good 2 + car lengths both times, he had K & N filters and that was it. But that is a new generation V8, with a 7 speed auto in it, and I do believe they are lighter then the SRT.

V8s are very deceptive I find they feel quite abit quicker then they actually are due to the unreal noise they produce!!!

It sounds real sweet! And better than that the instal looks like it came that way from the factory. Beautiful car, beautiful execution. Lantana, do you think the Mopar performance TCM could be made to work with our PCM's? I'm told It really firms up the shifts.
