Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
Re: Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
[QUOTE=dedwards0323;859469]The 229.3 & 229.5 oil grades per M-B were listed as suitable for the M-B model years of 1998 thru 2004. Since the XFire is based off the SLK-320 platform from this era, these oils are suitable for the 3.2 liter V6 in our cars. The 229.5 (per M-B) was formulated for model years beginning with 2005 (but could be used as a replacement for 229.3) and has an extended operating range - oil changes could be pushed out. M-B also stipulated to accomplish this, the fleece-type filter had to be used. I'm guessing that using the paper-type filter meant you had to change the oil per the 229.3 spec.
Forum Folks,
Just a quick question... what is a "fleece-type filter"? And please provide a brand name. In my other cars I use WIX filters or a Napa filter that is made by WIX.
Thanks in Advance... Andy

I use the fleece filter primarily because an oil change is every 2 years for me due to my reduced mileage from only weekend getaways &/or road trips.
Hope this helps. Check out the forum on this - there's lots of info. And NAPA does have both versions. NAPA shows the fleece-type applicable specifically to the SRT-6 XFire and is more expensive. But this filter also works in the NA (normally aspirated) XFires. Both typically come with all the O-rings for the filter and one for the dipstick. You have to be careful to get the oil rings installed properly or a catastrophic leak will occur when you restart the engine. The oil filter is on top and makes a real mess whenever it leaks.
The NAPA 'Look-Up" is for the NA XFire. Four filters are most likely the specific NAPA series (i.e., Normal, Silver, Gold, Platinum). If you conduct the 'Look-Up' for an SRT-6 (Model Year 2005 or 2006), the fleece-type filter will pop-up.

Re: Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
dedwards0323,
Thanks for the info on filters and computer use... I have a condition known in my family as: ODNTS...Old Dog New Trick Syndrome. We are waiting on the paperwork we need to transfer the car from the estate to my wife, and then I can begin checking the car over and changing all fluids. The car has been sitting for about 6 months. While doing my inspection work I may be forced to take a... or maybe several... test drives. Willl I ever get done?

First, the difference between paper (YUK!) and Fleece (YES!)
Fleece on the left, of course.
These are German-made, reboxed MANN filters:
There seem to be many companies making the paper ones, but only MANN making Fleece, then selling them to other suppliers with a "license" to re-box them.

When you conduct a search for oil filters that fit the Crossfire, there typically are two versions that pop up: one has the filter media constructed from paper and the other is constructed with 'fleece' or cloth-like material. Both filters will work, but there are some of us that prefer the 'fleece' filter over the paper filter. And you can see by M-B's specs, to obtain the extended oil change intervals with the long-life oil grades, the fleece filter is required.

My husband and I met John Penz about a year ago.
Well, to make a long story short, tomorrow, I am going to be the new and proud owner of John's Crossfire.
To those who are unfamiliar, it is Alabaster with black and white interior. GORGEOUS!
Wish we would have known John longer.
He was so well liked by you all, but I will be keeping his memory alive every time I'm driving that beautiful car.

Re: Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
Now I'm a little confused.. I thought "Snow White" was sold a few years back.. and within this last year he had acquired another Crossfire.. "Yours" has Snow White graphics on it??
Re: Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
Mrmiata,
When I was looking at John's Crossfire after I made the deal to purchase it, his grand-daughter told me he called it 'Snow White' and when the spoiler is up, there is a bumper sticker with the seven dwarves on it. And, I was told by her that he had intended to air brush the image of Snow White on it somewhere. So, I guess it's the same car you thought sold a while back.

Re: Buying 2005 Roadster Limited Ed...
Mrmiata,
I have been the official new owner of John's Crossfire for a few hours now, and I asked his wife, Eileen, if my new car was called "Snow White" since it had a decal of the seven dwarves under the spoiler and she verified that it was not. The "Snow White" car was indeed sold. The decal threw me for a loop, so I'll have to clarify this. I've been bouncing off the wall now that 'she's' mine'!!! Sorry for the confusion. Eileen told me he had the image of Snow White air-brushed under the hood, and I'm glad you sent this photo.
By the way, do you or have you owned Miatas--hence your name?? I love my '08. My husband, Andy, owns 3 (a '92; a '99 and a 2016 Launch Edition). We're trying to sell John's, so if you know of someone who would like to buy his 2010 Miata...
Thanks,
Karen
