DJ new member and question(s)
I have purchased a 2005 black basic roadster/6 speed, 68,500 miles. Most impractical car I have ever owned, and I love it' With that being said, had it 2 weeks, steering wheel locks up. Chrysler dealer ship wanted $1100 for parts and $594 in labor. Long story short, got the parts for $330. They installed it, saved $770. The problem is now my key fobs will not work in the ignition. I received a new cylinder lock and keys for my new lock. But with out a fob. The transponder coil is just hanging from the ignition switch, I have to put my fob in the coils' circle and then using the new key, start the car. Car runs fine after removing the fob. My questions to you more knowledgeable members are as follow: If I buy a couple of Fob's off Ebay, can I just change the micro chip stuff inside the old Fob to the new Fob and follow the directions to resynchronize the new Fob? And does anyone know where I can get these new Fob's key cut to the new key? The car operates fine except for starting it and if I have to will live with it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I live in St. Cloud, FL.

Just replacing the ignition assembly makes me think it was the later. If so that could have been fixed for nothing, glad you saved some money anyway. You say the new key is like the keys of old? The end of the key on the fob comes off if you knock the pin out as it is two pieces. Doing that could it fit your new key?
Re: DJ new member and question(s)
Mrmiata, Thanks for the help, may help solve my problem if I can find someone locally to cut a new fob key to match my present key. Great article, I guess it can't all be put in 1 place?
onehundred80, The key wouldn't turn, not an 1/8", had to jack it up on 2 jacks, just to pull it up and swing it around so a roll back could get to it. The part you twist to start the car is flat rubber like, with a big hole for put on a key chain. It reminds me of my old 69 240D Mercedes key.

Re: How to take apart a key fob without destroying it!
Re: DJ new member and question(s)
One hundred80, and the rest of you are the best. I should have consulted this form prior to having a dealer work on the car. I have a repair manual, the task just seem a little doting? OK let me throw this by you guys and see what we can catch.
If I was to take one of my old Fob's apart and take the transponder chip and glue it to the in side of transponder ring, then that should solve my problem of using my new key with my old ignition? I'm only posting this, in case I can't not locate someone to cut my blanks on my new key fobs.
It seems like getting Crossfire"s(aka, Mercedes) keys cut, is next to impossible? I heard or read some where that it is done by laser, anyone know?
Again, all the guys who responded to these post, give yourselves a couple pats on the back and a couple " 'at boys".

The keys are not cut with a laser, that is rubbish. That was probably a dealer trying to confound someone and sell them a $500 key. They are cut with a a small end mill type of machine, I have my original spare key, never used by the look of it and you can see the machining marks.
You could glue the chip where you say but you have defeated over half the anti-theft system and the car could be hot wired.
Re: DJ new member and question(s)
Because the so called expert at the Chrysler/Dodge dealer drilled about everything he could. Must be at least 7 or8 drill holes in the steering lock and he must have 1st tried drilling out the actual lock cylinder. My question about the transponder chip is mute anyways, found a lock smith that can cut Mercedes/Crossfire keys. So have ordered 2 new empty Fobs w/blank keys and will have new keys cut and change over the internal electrics from the old fobs. Go to go, I hope?

Re: DJ new member and question(s)
I'm beginning to think that this Crossfire is possessed. Carfax shows this car never being wrecked. But it is missing both of the door latch attachment screws from the drivers door (have ordered 3), one missing from passenger door. I guess someone has had the door apart, maybe both sides. Anyways, will keep plugging along till I get it to the point it is my car. Thanks again, shouldn't be any more questions for a while, I hope.

Correct answers require the correct information so the answer is correct.
Re: DJ new member and question(s)
onehundred80, not sure what your referring to in your statement about information? But every question was where I was at in the information network. I didn't know about how many holes he drilled and where, until they were done with it(the car) and I picked it up with the part. They just said they had to drill it to unlock it.
And as far as the key being duplicated, I was told of a place in Miami, but really didn't want to drive all the way down there, except as a last resort. Called a bunch of Mercedes dealers around Orlando and is was as if it was a trade secret, they were not willing to share. It was a locksmith who finally told me he could get them cut.
If I have offended you in some way with my questions, I apologize. Every one of my questions, that you answered and directed me to the answers, were greatly appreciated. I will try to make any more only on intelligent items. Thanks again for all your help.
