His name wasn't Alfred Packer was it? Buried in Littleton, Co.
Don't get caught on Slumgullion Pass in the snow, you never know who your friends really are. lol

Too funny, no, my namesake is Doc Holliday.... John Henry Holliday.....when having that last name of Holliday, you get stuck with Doc as a nickname...he is the one buried out there when he died of TB.....in the winter. His body was put in a shallow grave until spring, when they could dig a deeper hole...they forgot where they buried him, so the story goes. More than likely, someone knew, but to prevent his grave of being robbed, this story works better. Anyway, enough of history.....

Like I always say, it's not the ones with my name on them that worry me, it's the ones with "To Whom It May Concern" that I worry about. lol

They had a huge boulder drop through the freeway bridge outside of Glenwood Springs this summer. It was big enough to close the west bound lanes for days. Nobody hurt, just the hazards of living in the Rockies.

You are guaranteed some beautiful drives next summer. We will send all the bad JUJU away before anyone gets here. lol

I would like to propose an additional route - although it's more of a day outing rather than just a route...driving to the top of Pikes Peak. The reviews I've read from people who have taken the drive were very favorable, and you end up around 14,100 feet with tremendous views (plus a donut shop :-)). The toll road to the top starts at Manitou Springs (about 10 miles NW of Colorado Springs), and is about 19 miles one way. The majority of the road is paved - I asked the people in CS about the condition of the road and this was their response:

"Thanks for writing Pikes Peak - America's Mountain. We do have a partially paved highway. It's well maintained gravel for 3 of the 19 miles. 3/4 of the highway is paved and the unpaved 3-mile portion is approximately halfway up the highway. The road does reach the summit of Pikes Peak. We will be paving a few miles of the highway this summer so more than likely the time you come up we will be having some road work done. There may be slight delays but nothing too bad.

We get different kinds of sports cars that drive up the highway and since the gravel road is well maintained there normally isn't any problems caused. On occasion we even get the Model T Club. Our highway is also the testing ground for some of the future model cars for brake statistics.

We hope to see you soon!"

The round trip to the top from Manitou Springs is estimated at about 2 hours, plus any stopping for the sights. Cost is $12 per adult ($8 per adult with a group discount, but to get the discount we have to request it in advance and let them know how many will be going). The uphill gate opens at 9 am, so if we were to head out early enough (around 8 am), we could make it down to Manitou Springs, drive to the top of Pikes Peak, sightsee and drive back down in time for lunch and shopping/sightseeing in CS.

Three miles of gravel road with our cars may be a bit too much for the faint of heart :-), but it sounds like it is decent enough not to cause trouble with them. The people who reviewed the trip said the drive is quite challenging and very beautiful.

What does everyone think?

Mount Evans might be better for the time challenge, and is paved all the way to the top, and is just as nice.

Going up Trailridge is a bit longer to get to, just as nice, and a much longer drive over the entire length.

So many choices, not enough time.

Pikes Peak? I've got enough rock chips out of the front of my car, hood, and even mirror and door handle...no thank you. If you decide to try and get them to let you race up it like they for the Hill Climb, I'll be more than happy to bring my binoculars and watch.

Mount Evans is a higher peak with a paved auto road all the way to the top
Pikes Peak has gravel for the last 3 miles or so at the top and the road was pretty ruff and uneven when I was there a few years ago.

I'll park and take the rail road up to the top of Pikes Peak, no gravel for me
Could we rent(as a group) a Mustang or SLK and try it on the top section and compare it to a Crossfire

Pikes Peak was considered but because of the gravel we decided to not offer it as a group run. Depending on your time in the State there is no reason to not look at it if you want to experience the true Pikes Peak Hill Climb feeling. I will tell you, since I live in Colorado Springs, whereever you decide to go in the high mountain areas come prepared for cooler weather. It can be 80 degrees in Denver and 30 to 40 degress at 10,000 to 13,000 feet.

Mount Evans is a pretty drive depending on the day of the week. Lots of pedal bikes on the weekends, but still a great drive. There are so many great places to see and drive in the state, you will have to make an additional longer trip to see them all.

Your enthusisam is appreciated !!
