Post Something Random (No politics)
Re: Post Something Random (No politics)
In WWII, my dad was a "merchant marine", he served as a cook on a supply ship. It was not until I was out of high school that I realized that Dad WAS in the war (I always thought he "had it easy" on a ship).
See, Dad did not speak of the war much, other than in a joking way.
THen one day he explained about how they were a target, because they carried food, fuel and ammo to those serving in the European theater of operations. He spoke of how one of the ships in his convoy, on one of the runs, exploded (either from an accident on the ship or mine in the water) and how the ship went down with all hands.
I saw Dad's service differently after that. Dad died a few years later at age 83.
See, Dad did not speak of the war much, other than in a joking way.

The Merchant Marines, never get the credit that they should. Without them the war would have been lost.

Re: Post Something Random (No politics)
My father raised his right hand at an enlistment center 2 weeks after Pearl Harbor, where he served in Italy with an Army Air Force Photo Recon Unit that moved numerous times as the war progressed northward. Discharged in October of 1945 at Fort Dix. My mom and dad both passed, their ashes being with my sister in Georgia. who lives just down the road from a National Veterans Cemetary in Canton, where she made all the necessary paperwork required for burial.
it all came together last week, just 3 days after Memorial Day with a Chaplin leading the Service in the Chapel. The Chaplins talk, the unfurling and folding of the Flag by the Military, the Presentation of the Flag……were all part of a beautiful Thursday morning service. Later that afternoon, we found the temporary grave marker where their ashes are now
buried.
a granite stone with his name on one side, and my mother on the other will be added in August.

Now, the REST of the story? Hello officer, can I help you? Yes, please, can I see your pilots license, drivers license, and registration/insurance, seeing as you were approaching the car show (at) just before the 'rotate' velocity of a Boeing 747, in our school zone right across the street?

Re: Post Something Random (No politics)
I totally agree. Anyone who traverses a war zone (like during support of a world war) when navigating the Atlantic and other extremely dangerous waters where subs or waring parties can sink you, should have been recognized long before this. In fact, if my failing memory serves me, wasn't there a ship or two sunk by U-boats before war was declared against the axis and japan? Seems sometimes, those who do not act right away are culpable in denying too many who served, just recognition. I do know the longer feet are dragged, the more die off... Shame...

The closest I have ever been to a professional Fireworks show !!!
I recorded this entire 20 minute show from just across a small street from where the Fireworks were being sent to the sky.
There were very few of us who knew how close we could sit but it was amazing.
Enjoy the entire 2024 Warrenville Fireworks Show up close right here !!!

I just HATE all these new tech things to make something easy (supposedly easier). When the tech fails, it takes a huge effort to replace/reprogram/troubleshoot/finding the manuals/and finally gobs of monies to fix. Just give me a key and a lock on a door, if the included garage opener on the vehicle doesn't work for ANY reason. Simple, very simply, use the key. Power failures, no problem... Lightning storms burning out receivers or high RFI locations (including a surge through the electrical grid sometimes called a momentary that wrecks havoc on components in electrical/electronics components), ad nauseam. KISS, someting engineers have no comprehension of because (it) to them it is an oxymoron. When has anyone of late crawled into an engine compartment to fix something? Usually, it is buried deep behind all the crapola throughout the engine bay....
There, I got that off my chest... Thanks all! LOL
