Well, as my dad always told me "It'll feel better when it quits hurting". Never made me feel much better but perhaps it will you.

Talking Re: The axe fell

screw them. DOnt waste time on undoing them, that is their job and they are fully capable of doing that. THey dont deserve your consideration........

Use this as a new start and chance to kill off your old ways, use your wisdom to formulate a better approach.

Remember age and wisdom will overcome youth and vigor all the time. Check out airconditioning, all the guys that are doing things are old like me, cause the newbees have not gotten the experience and wanna get it done so they can text message their BFF about the meetup they gonna have after they leave work ( 7 minutes early ).

What does not kill you, will make you stronger and possibly more creative. Woody

Thanks for the invite. Let's see what happens first. By the way, how did you know that Tennessee was home? I spent 10 years in Bristol Tennessee and then 10 en Memphis during my formative years. When is the running of the Dragon? Any chance I get to drive a little? I could show you my braking technique. Wow, I haven't used that line since high school.

I have identified my "Red" and now I'm in process of contacting them all to iron out the specifics and terms and conditions. I guess I should explain that I specialize and concentrate in one area of the Island and to go it "alone" I need to cover the Island with my services. There are lots of professionals out there but getting new clients is difficult. Thats where I think I have excellent prospects. Important people in my industry know my wife and I and are aware of our work. I may end up with more than I can handle.

Tomorrow I'm headed to Sabana Tire which has an extensive inexpensive line of used tires. I also made a contact with a person that brings performance tires from Europe of all places. Seems the TUV demands tires be changed that are still good because they may be marginal before the next inspection. I'll know what's available soon. I can't justify $1,500 (with shipping) for Michelin Pilot Sport Cups until I have "moved on" and have secure prospects for new business.

I want to thank everyone that has generously supported me in these last days with kind words and encouragement.

Les, stop teasing us. What line of business are you in? Maybe someone here can help you.

Ok, Ok! Pushy people! I do title abstracts for the title insurance industry. My firm has over 40 years experience in the local market. I was informed that the axe murderer fired 8 people with over 30 years experience each from my former client on Friday. (Mexican national that I'm told was brought in to upgrade the computer systems. WTF is she doing messing with what has worked for 40 years?) An american company bought controlling share of the title insurance company I do work for in 2002, if memory serves me correctly. (can't remember for sure and I'm not going to check as we speak) Apparently the U.S. operations are loosing so much money that they are trying to maximize profits where they exist. Unfortunately for this nameless company, the children they are employing will be their undoing. You never, never take any risk, no matter how small in this business. I have 50 contacts for monday. My only problem is I specialize in the San Juan metro area. To be successful in winning clients I will have to expand Island wide or subcontract. I have the names and numbers of reliable professionals with Professional Indemnity Insurance but intend to do as much as possible with my people that I know and trust. And you know what? I'm confident enough that I'm ordering my Pilot Sport Cup tires next week for my Crossfire. I WILL NOT FAIL! Thanks for having patience with my livid rant. My only regret is doing everything in my power over the last few years for this company to survive. Now I'm convinced they will fail in the next few years. They have released every single professional that helped the company become No. 1 in Puerto Rico.

AT&T and Motorola have done a LOT of "letting people go who made them successful" in recent years. It's to the point that neither company can support their products anymore. And I speak with authority here - I work with both companies on a daily basis.

Idiots. Hope both companies go belly up!

Les: The Tail will be over Halloweem weekend. I'll be coming thru Tennessee on Thursday, so I could pick you up in Knoxville at the airport. I might let you drive, but will need to interview you first. Let me know if you are coming home.

Hey, Franc. We could also pick him up on the way to Fort Worth. So Les, we could pick you up at the Dallas Airport Friday, the last weekend in September. You'll have to review the Texas thread and the Tail of the Dragon thread for more details. Pick you event. The offer stands.

Your screen-name now makes perfect sense.

Tragic as it may seem, the axe-murderer brought in to find efficiencies and profits for your former client did exactly that: let go the stable of older and higher paid 'experience' in favor of younger, leaner and meaner, 'go-getters'. Happens all the time, unfortunately.

Darn shame that a personnel culling in your client's organization also trampled your feeder company. Dang. Again, cudos to your debt-free life style. You'll be fine.

Good luck, Mr. Veloci.

Les,

This is when you say goodbye to the relative safety of the coporate pool and swim off on your own.
40 yeas in the business, you got at least three things going for you.

Experience, contacts, and attitude.

Remember all those times you felt your idea was better?

Prove it.

It ain't easy being green but it is a lot more fun.

good luck

I appreciate the offer. It is quite attractive to me but I can't plan too far ahead right now. I need to go to Texas to visit my brother in Austin sometime soon but driving from Texas to east Tennessee ... OUCH! I've done it before but that was before the bad .... and the bad .... body parts. When I get things rolling again I'll just have to buy a SRT-6 and keep it in the states for when I visit.

I'd be happy to "keep" it for you. Ya' know, just drive it on weekends to keep it loose and all. Don't want that oil and gas to go bad from jus sittin'.

And for you, I'll provide the service for free.

Reviving an old thread for the masses. Today I received an email asking me to consider accepting work from my former exclusive client. It seems the cost cutting measures, not only aren't saving money, but are costing them in other ways. They are calling all their former subcontractors that got them to number 1 in the recent past. I have reservations about doing work for them, but I'm not vindictive. I'm giving it consideration. But not at the same price as before. One reason I'm considering it is ....... I could afford more excesses for my SRT-6 (future 8?) Should I insist they fire the axe murderer? Nah, not my concern. It will happen in good time.

Considering the past action, tell them you want a termed contract for what you feel is suitable for them to determine hiring you direct, say after 2 or 3 years?

Good luck.

Glad you posted this Les. I too have been where you were. And in fact, just did it again. I sold out to the company I was working for. Pennies on the dollar, but they hired me at more than I was making for myself, bennies pkg, and all. Sent me on a vacation...etc....etc...I just decided to get debt free. Backing off on spending....increasing my work hrs at both jobs...until I have everything paid off. Once all that is done, and things look bright again, I will jump back in both feet...it's good to be old sometimes...

Les,
As a small businessman who does contract work myself, you know I relate. It is a delimma.
But think of the enjowment of having that damm swordover you hed every day again. Wasn't that fun?

Now for the real question, do you miss it? If you do, then I say jump back in.

Life ain't for the timid and sitting at home wishing you were in the ring fighting, breathing, living is a drag. There are worse things than going broke.

Good luck on the outcome.

Bon Chance!

I'll call them tomorrow and we'll talk. Frankly, I like working less but miss the challenge of the difficult cases.

Your intuition proved to be correct Les!

Take it slow and easy. You say you got an email. I would go in and have a face-to-face meeting if you're really serious.

I am confident that you will make the right decision for you.
