Default LED strip light for trunk

Reposting this in the correct section.....

http://www.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772680

So I did this to my Z and it worked out beautifully. When my girlfriend saw it, she was like, hey I want that in my Crossfire. So I ordered a few LED bulbs, some for the dome lights, and some to replace the entire license plate lights and the one for the trunk light.

For the Z install, I just took the red and black wire and hooked them up to the opposite end of the bulb and it worked. When I tried that with the crossfire, It shorted out, and blew the fuse, took me 20 min to figure that out, so I replaced the fuse, got everything working, but now I want to hook up the led strip, and I wanted to get some advice from some of you guys who are more electrically inclined then myself.

I had it kinda working at one point, but then I shorted it, so clearly I'm just handy enough to be dangerous. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance guys. And FP if your reading this your black beauty is still going strong, we just put new Koni adjustables on it and it feels like brand new car. Still can't say thanks enough!!

Jeff

Don't see why it would blow the 10 amp fuse ( unless you shorted something ) :

After thinking about it more, I must have jumped the two connectors in the lamp housing, I really need to solder the ends to each of the contacts that touch the end of the bulb. Those brass strips are really close together and it must have shorted and thats what blew the fuse. Do you think it matters which side is positive and negative, black and red wire that the led strip uses??

Thanks for the diagram, that helps as well. Appreciate it!!

Jeff

YES ! The LED strip will not work unless the polarity is correct.

I didn't see any indication of + or - on the brass connectors. I guess if its wrong it won't work, but shouldn't short out, as long as I don't cross the streams.... lol. I'll take some pics to show the finished look. It made a huge difference in the Z4 as far as visibility at night when you need to fish around in the trunk for something.

Thanks again!

No, there wouldn't be as the filament bulb does not care about polarity.
Look at the wire colors in the schematic, red/gray is +, brown/yellow is -

Got it working and I have to say, its freaking cool. Thanks xfire!!!

So for those who are interested in a super simple led mod. Here's what I used....

https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...528/1466/2897/

I punched a small hole right next to the trunk light, fished it through and wired it up.

Replaced the bulb with this LED bulb...

https://www.superbrightleds.com/more...car/2161/4950/

And this is the result. I will add a night time shot later tonight when it gets dark, but its pretty sweet. And it was dead simple, just don't cross the wires over the brass lines, or you will short it and blow a 10a fuse.

Looks cool, but when you have little trunks like us, don't need a lot of light, lol.

I have a coupe and when I had items in the trunk I often found that the light was on the wrong side to see what I wanted to get at. Also the OEM light unit had no reflector and the area behind the side panel was better lit than the trunk. So I installed two LED lights, one in the OEM cut out and I added a cutout to match it on the other side. It now looks much brighter in the trunk and it also looks OEM.

I did both foot wells in the cabin in a similar fashion.
