Fun with decals on the third brake light.
Re: Fun with decals on the third brake light.
it is much easier to manipulate the slight curve with the individual letters by securing the center letter and working outward.

If I can remove the masking decals without damaging them then I may place them on the hatch for the blackout look.

Im going to use my set as masking. I will remove the lamp from the car, place the decals where they should be then spray the lens with lens tint. A couple coats to darken it significantly should do the trick. Then remove the decals and voila, lighted letters. Then I can take the chrome letters off the hatch because they have been bugging me.

Autozone. Its called Rustoleum lens tint in translucent black color. They also sold a "chrome" tint if you want that look. $14 a can but it shouldn't take much. I am going to tint the tail lights slightly at the same time.
Its technically 'for off road use only' so use at your own risk. Might be illegal in your state. It is in mine but I see cars running around all the time with it so.....

Re: Fun with decals on the third brake light.
Thanks! I'll get some and probably do the same thing you are doing. If you have any pointers I would appreciate it. Do you have to use 800 grit on the plastic in order for it to stick? Texas just made open containers in the car illegal a few years ago, tinted taillights shouldn't be a big deal.
Re: Fun with decals on the third brake light.
The instructions say all you need to do is remove all the wax and grease. Then just light coats until its tinted as dark as you want it.
I am shooting for slight tinting on all my lenses, probably a bit darker on the 3rd brake light to make the letters show a bit more.

Ok, update with some info and a pic, however hard it is to see anything in.

The decals are too sticky to use well as masking. They are too high of quality to remove easily, good for permanence, bad for removability. I discovered a bit too late that the spacing on my set was a bit off so I ended up with the C being a little crowded on the lens.
The tint goes on and looks pretty dark, but the leds in the roadster light are very bright and shine through it brightly. I went light on the tint because I didnt want it black, but when its lit up you cant really see the difference between the non-tinted letters and the tinted lens. More coats would emphasize the difference much better so if you want the letters to show when the brake lights are on, be prepared to make that sucker DARK!
So, Andrew, do you think you could get these letters cut out in masking grade vinyl so they can be removed easier for people like me wanting to go this route? I also think I want to play around with the spacing, maybe close up the gaps a bit. It would be much easier to mail off the letters separated for those of us looking to do this. Just some ideas/questions/musings.

Re: Fun with decals on the third brake light.
bought some pasti-dip for my wheels and thinking that it will work perfectly for using on the brake light. Since it is peelable, if you don't quite like the results then start all over again. I had debadged the car years ago so I'll just use those letters which fit perfectly. Not sure if the small town cops will have a problem.

The brighter spots that show up on the deck lid are where the letters are. More coats would have made it look much better.
Thanks Andrew, I am sure they will know what you are requesting from them. Masking decals are quite common.
