HID wear on fog lights...
HID wear on fog lights...
I was wondering if anyone could let me know from experience how the hid fog lights hold up due to them coming on every time you lock your car.. I know it is bad for hid's to turn them on and off constantly, and reduced the life of the bulb. Is there anyway to prevent the fogs kicking on when you lock the car? It just seems like it is really bad to drive with them on at night, pull in the driveway turn everything off and sure enough getting out you hit lock so they kick on again and off again about 10 seconds later
Re: HID wear on fog lights....
Its not that bad on the ballasts. Generally you should wait 5 seconds between cutting them on again. Running them as fogs isnt the issue. Make sure you get 35w kits as the 55w kits have been known to melt the plastic housings of small lights due to the extra heat, plus the higher wattage tends to wash out the color
Re: HID wear on fog lights....
There should be a 5 second wait time from turning them off to turning them back on. The biggest reason for this is the thermal shock of the arc can blow up the bulb.
The ballast can take whatever you throw at it, other than prolonged voltage fluctuations (old ballasts) as it causes the relays in the ballast to open and close randomly basically keeping the bulb in the light off phase so they never get up to temp

Re: HID wear on fog lights...
well i'm sure as you saw from my post earlier I am no expert but I have been doing my homework lately because i'm thinking about putting hids in my fogs and headlights since my fogs are fried but everything I've heard is even though the halogen runs a bit hotter the hid is longer and will create more heat closer to the clear part of the housing and can create heat issues. but that’s just hear say. :/
