Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
Re: Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
In the first post (If you read it yet again) you will note that I had purchased the accessory part 'Illuminated Sill Plates'. These generally cost just over $200 new from the dealer (prices may vary).
I happened to get mine from a forum member who had decided not to install their set.
You MUST have these to begin the 'mod' of this accessory. If you do not, the original sill plates on the Crossfire (SRT6 has them too) will only have a stamped lettered 'Crossfire' on it and not the cut out like the illuminated sill plates.
A conversion of the stock ones could be done, but it would probably require the use of a CNC mill to or CNC laser engraver type machine to cut out your letters where they are stamped now and this would be very expensive, probably more than the accessory kit itself.
Cheers!

This thread does not mention from WHERE you obtained the sill plates frs from. I was just asking some simple information, not to be told for me to READ the forums.
Your first POST on page 1 of this thread
I am not trying to start anything here but i thought this forum was for us to help each other.
Well, I got the illuminated sill plates and I got the replacement parts I wanted and you get a tutorial.
The original plates come as a light blue color when lit. This is nice, but I wanted to change it to purple (wife's favorite color).
So I went in search of one inch wide Electro-Luminescent Tape. I found it at: www.beingseen.com. I ordered it on the phone so I could get less than 20+ feet which is the smallest amount you can order on their online store. I could not order purple tape itself, but rather they had white EL tape and a purple film to put over it. This would probably work for a variety of colors or even alternating letter/word colors, etc.
They suggested I get them to put on the connections, include two inverters and leave the tape in a single piece. I will probably suggest that you let them put on the connections if you are not able to solder well. I also would suggest you only let them send you one inverter as the second one for me is just going to be used for experimentation on the leftover tape.
Next step was disassembling the original illuminated sill plates and replacing the blue tape with the new white tape and purple film.
Here is the original kit.

Where did you get the CROSSFIRE metal strip??
It doesn't exist on my car.
Thanks,
AJ

I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way by telling you to re-read the first post.
The fact is Crossfires don't come from the factory with Illuminated Sill Plates. These are an accessory available normally through your Chrysler dealer for the aforementioned cost of over $200.
I obtained mine through a user on this board who decided not to install theirs.
I will edit my first post to correct this oversight.
Again my apologies.
EDIT: Your question was not completely clear to me AJ.

Re: Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
MMZ_TimeLord, when following your method I imagine the door sills will be illuminated whenever the dome light is on. Would you happen to know when the door sills will be illuminated in following the included instructions?
Edit - Following the wiring schematic from the service manual, it looks like that following the included instructions will illuminate a door sill when its corresponding door is open. However, the key must be in ACC, ON/RUN, or START in order for that wire to be hot. Doh, makes it useless when getting into and out of the car without the key in the ignition if that is the case.
Edit Again! - Going through the wiring schematics again, it looks like the left and right door ajar switches are grounds, and the wire I mistook for a ground is a constant hot wire. Never mind!

Re: Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
The main difference in the way I did it is that you can shut them off from the dome light switch. If you turn off the dome light switch, the dome light, cargo light AND sill plates will be off.
If you turn them to the always on position the same applies, the dome light, cargo light AND sill plates will be always on.
If you leave the switch in the auto position, then they will come on when you open a door, just like the dome and cargo lights.

Re: Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
Great write-up! I ordered my illuminated door sills today and will order the EL tape in red tomorrow. I have a few questions:
Is the wiring the same for an SRT Roadster?
Is there a reason not to use the inverter supplied with the door sills?
When you cut the EL tape in half, do you have to do anything to the cut end (i.e. complete the circuit, etc).
Thanks.

Re: Illuminated Sill Plates - How to change the color and install
Hi,I just installed the Illuminate door sill I used the instructions that came with the kit and hooks it up from the passenger side. My question is the passenger door sill only light up if the driver side door is open, if I close the drive side door the light goes out on the passenger side. I hooked up the red wire on the relay to the black/yellow/white wire on the car. Any ideas or does it work this way?
Thanks
