Re: srt oil cooler
Glad you're looking into doing it yourself. The $120. or so in parts for this repair means they were looking to get $850. for a couple hours worth of work. Unfortunately they often get away with this type of gouging.
Re: srt oil cooler
Being the total cynic when it comes to dealing with what I am told at shops and dealers, I have to ask is what they say true? What indication do you have that there is a leak at all. I think this would be a first here in all of the last 11 years.
Re: srt oil cooler
I do not think that is the correct part on ebay
SLK32 is calling for a different part number, it lists at $635
I can do 530 shipped on it for you new, or I have a used good one here if you are interested in that?
if you just need the oring seals between the oil cooler and oil filter housing we can get those for 30 shipped
once resolved do a full coolant and oil change

Re: srt oil cooler
The cooling housing is Mercedes #112 180 00 85 on my SRT6, and Behr #87938.
The numbers you want are on each part but I cannot see what the filter housing number is.

Re: srt oil cooler
As there is a gasket involved here I would first look at it to see if it has broken. Much cheaper and without taking it apart how could they say where it is leaking? I cannot see you wanting the oil filter housing anyway, just the gasket and maybe the aluminum cooling housing.

Re: srt oil cooler
Update
Got the oil cooler off. It was a pain in the butt as I dont own a 46mm socket to get the filter housing off.
I realized when I got the cooler off that the coolant and oil both enter the cooler... duh. For some reason I thought it was pumping coolant into the cooler and cooling the oil that was inside the filter housing. Also of note, the gaskets were completely fine. Both were set in tight with no noticeable signs of wear. These gaskets would not affect anything besides oil leaking to the outside of the engine anyways.
When I took the cooler off I dumped it out in a bucket. While doing so I saw what seemed to be fairly fresh oil come out of the coolant side, leading me to believe this in fact my problem as told by the mechanic.

Re: srt oil cooler
Generally when oil and water mix in an engine they emulsify and you get what looks like a chocolate milkshake.
Re: srt oil cooler
The reason I assumed it was fresh is it was still dark brown. It didnt have time to turn into that fatty looking crud.
