350 hp no problem!
350 hp no problem!
Well guys, I finally got an answer to my question. Can the Xfires clutch, transmission and rear end handle the supercharger hp boost? Putting out big bucks for a supercharger is one thing but what about the rest of the power train?
Just got an e-mail from Cory Umenoto, tech manager at Kleemans and he said that they have modified a number of SLK320s (same as Xfires) and the Xfire power train can handle 400 lbs./ft continuous torque. He said that they have had 0 failures. Pheww! You gotta like it! OK so who is going to be 1st to make a supercharged 6 speed?

check out www.bergwerks.com they're selling those stuff from Kleeman and RENNtech

Re: 350 hp no problem!
I've had mine installed in Dallas by an Upsolute guy and it does make a big difference in the low end torque where you'll notice a significant pull in the 2nd and 3rd. But I'll recommend that you do your muffler upgrade first before you do the chip to really feel the big difference.

X'ed....right on bro !! Bob G...thanx for the info, just what i was looking for info wise. Ive been doing some research on the Nissan 350Z forums re Vortech superchargers....they are having a lot of problems with pistons ad rods at around 8-9 psi. Seems as thought the Nissan V6 has **** rods - the compressive loads are too much for them.
But its nice to know the X fire trans/rear end can take the torque - I wonder how they tested them....or is it just a consistant caning and hope nothing lets go ???
Hmmmm

Re: 350 hp no problem!
True guys but even I know of some Z's that have dropped their guts nat aspirated - problem? Rod integrity - or lack thereof.
Yes IMO 9 psi is a fair bit of boost to put thru a std engiine - the compressive loads are quite high with an engine that has static comp of 10.5:1. You can only go so far with tuning - mechnical integrity will not be improved with good tuning....only the safety margin/power output will increase or decrease with tuning.
I priced a new, complete 3.2 shortblock - $2100.00. If you order aftermarket rods/pisotns and leave out the factory pistons/rings and rods......it will be cheaper.
Mains studs, head studs, forged pistons and h beam rods....way to go.
Looking into the feasibilty.....

EXFYRED: Good to here your feed back as you are the most knowledgeable guy I have heard from when it comes to superchargers. Please keep us updated about the Vortech superchargers when you know more. The Kleemans unit is 7lbs boost and from the stock Xfire, it moves us up to 330 hp and 325 ft/lbs torque with no internal mods. I would think that with the boost at only 7lbs. it should be reasonably bullet proof! Whats your thoughts?
Add a K&N, chip and exhaust system and we are over 350 hp realistically. Lets face it, I am not planning to race it, but it would be nice to have the extra torque for the "fun factor"!
I have only two problems left to deal with:
1) big bucks $11,000>< US!
2) Say goodbye to the 7 yr warrenty I purchased!

Re: 350 hp no problem!
Bob the problem with Kleemann is the following:
1. Too far for us - Europe means coversion rate, freight, duties and TAX !!
2. Too expensive - 11K for what amounts to what is available for the SRT-6
3. Tunability - farly limited in as much as what power you can extract from it.
4. Will still void warranty.
The more I research, the more Im realising that if youre going to do this, theway to do it is DO IT RIGHT from the beginning.
One way is to build a strong MB 3.2 short block with forged pistons and decent rods and add our cyl heads to them...perhaps port them to allow sufficient exhaust scavenging with the supercharger.
Add an aftermarket computer, injectors and fuel managment....and the Vortech blower. At almost 200ci, 400 HP per cube is feasible (330HP at the rear wheels), strong power in anyones book. Hell, even the SRT-6 puts out 330HP, which is no slouch.
IMO...I still think it will be cheaper to build a strong, stroker (408ci) fuel injected Mopar Small Block with lighter aluminium heads and back it with a T56 psd. You will easily make 450HP and 430 ft/lbs of tq in a naturally aspirated engine, less stressed and will last forever. If you want more, add a vortech to it and you will get 600 plus easily....if thats what you want. Plus its an American engine.
Set up the small block correctly....and it shouldnt affect handling too much b/c of the weight. Parts for the Mopar small block are available everywhere and your CARB emissions shouldnt be affected with this EFI engine. IMHO, this kinda swap will be more feasible once the warranty is close to expiry....but hey, STARTECH crams in a 6.1 MB V8, so why couldnt we swap in a strong Mopar small block with aluminium heads ??
Can you say KING OF THE HILL ??

Re: 350 hp no problem!
I hear you Xfyred! Hell, why not the new Hemi? My brother races the Monsa in my pics gallery and he has been talking about the Hemi since I bought the Xfire. The reality is that it is, my daily driver and I have to have a reliable car for business. It has to look classy but not to racey, as I am a Realtor. I don't know if my clients want be to have that much fun! I specialize in the listing side of the business so I very seldom need more than two seats. If needed, my wife will let me use her Lexus. I would love to see what you end up doing with yours though!
I would be in heaven with just 350 hp for the next couple of years as long as it is dependable, plus with the 6 speed I think I would need surgery to remove the smile from my face! Heck, Xfire's couldn't get much better looking!
Who knows, maybe one day I can live on the "edge" like you! Take care!

Re: 350 hp no problem!
The issue is not boost pressure, but tuning. Unless you are going to run separate stand alone electronics for fuel and spark, forget about it until someone comes out with a tuner that allows control of these elements in the DC ECU. Under virtually any boost you will break stuff if you get pre-ignition. This is virtually always the problem with parts failure.
If someone can get me into the ECU, I will do a supercharger project.....but not before I can make the car run right afterwords.

small insider hint:
the SRT-6 is advertized as 334HP (in Europe) due to marketing reasons (to keep the distance to the 360HP SLK 55 AMG). Indeed the engine is exactly the same as the SLK 32 AMG engine - it also put out 354HP. Just dyno it and you will see.

Re: 350 hp no problem!
I'm no auto guru or fanatic, yet, but can anyone tell me if the stock 3.2 in my '04 with auto tranny xfire can be converted to a suprecharged rod like the '05s ? Or is the cost too much to bear ? Or would it be best to trade up ? Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Re: 350 hp no problem!
Are you interested in an engine swap. I believe that and more is what it would take to give you the SRT6 power. I think you would be better to go for the upgrade to the SRT6 because you would get all the other goodies like suspension, exhaust, etc. Also, you would get another new car unless you can find a good used one around but that is unlikely.
