Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
I understand there are a number of threads on the topic so do bare with me for a moment. I have read almost all of them, and have not been able to grasp the idea yet.
I own a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire N/A which recently started experiencing some misfire problems. The codes I was getting reflected a misfire in every cylinder. P0301..0302.. and so on. The car misfires promptly around 4200RPM regardless of throttle position, and functions flawlessly below that. I could not diagnose and pinpoint the problem myself and hence took it to the dealership. (Perhaps a controversial move)
It took them 2 appointments and 10 hours to suggest an issue with my crank shaft pulley/harmonic balancer. I took a look down there and noticed wear on the rubber "seal". They suggested fuel pressure was normal, and the cats are solid.
Could this in fact be the root cause and only cause to the misfire? Where can I get the replacement outside of the dealership. (Chrysler wants $620 for it: Part #5142979-AA, IE: TOO expensive)
Does anyone have a mercedes counterpart number? Or an alternative that is feasible?
Thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
FJP

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
But if the harmonic balancer was bad, would you not have noticed the vibration/noise associated with such a failure? Symptoms commonly associated with such a failure are noises and vibrations.
I can't wait for one of the more knowledgeable people on here to respond. I think I'm gonna learn something.

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
Are you sure you aren't talking about a crankshaft position sensor? I would think a harmonic balancer having a problem, they would be problems with pullies up front as well. And a whole lot of shakin' going on...but hey...here to listen and learn...
Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
So, um, Doc. Is this gonna be another "Why the hell are you taking this car to a dealer?" thread?
Please note I did not do my usual, um... you know. Rant.
Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
Just here to watch Pizza...man...Mark...here to learn... misfires are usually CPS....problems...just sayin'

You may have an air leak and the fuel mixture is all wrong.
Look at this thread and see some replies. The OP never gave the solution so who knows what his problem was.

Weebeeste what was the result of all this?
PM sent to Weebeeste
You could get a used pulley from MrMopar.

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
the elastomer coming out of the crank pulley wont cause a specific misfire. if it fails the pulley comes apart and causes massive damage. the crank pulley is keywayed to the crank so it doesnt move once installed to 150 ft/lbs plus 90*.
its easy to see if the pulley is wobbling start the car at idle and watch it. try oediscountparts.com and search under the slk 320 for a n/a car or slk32 for the srt-6 cars. my oem pulley was about 260$ shipped but i think you have issues elsewere

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
I can attempt to post a video link, as well as pictures of the pulley itself to get insight on that issue. I was sure it was another issue, however they insisted this was it, hence I moved on.
Now it appears I may have to change the pulley anyway, before it does any future damage.
As for now, like I said I have read numerous threads and here is what member "Mrobinso" said in an older thread:
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...on-sensor.html
"IMPORTANT NOTE: When the Crankshaft Position Sensor fails, the electric ignition will turnover, and by that I mean you will hear the electric ignition trying to start the engine (a “chik chik chik” sound), but the engine won’t run. If the electric ignition turns over and the engine runs briefly but sputters out, this is not the Crankshaft Position Sensor failing!"
If I understand that correctly, it cannot be the sensor, although I have heard the sensor is fairly cheap and often does fail.
While I wait for more responses I will attempt to pursue the sensor and test to see if that is the concern.
Thank You Everyone.
Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
I had a crankshaft sensor go bad and it would start and run rough.... start and run fine.... crank and crank and not start....
It could also be the CAMshaft sensor.... the ECU use both the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor to start.... x number of pulses of one between the pulses of the other. BUT, as stated, it is usually the crankshaft position sensor(CPS).
Make sure you get a good look at your crank pulley and determine if it is going bad. You DO NOT want it flying apart while running..... very bad ju ju

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
I'd get a CPS, if it does not fix it, you have a spare for when it DOES happen. Get a BOSCH, either from Autohuas in Arizona or German Auto Supply. Part number was 003 153 27 28 but now they ship a 0 261 210 170 (002).
Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
The Crank Position Sensor is a KNOWN FAILURE ITEM. I carry a spare one, never used in (car has 77,000 on it) but it's there for me if I need it. In fact, it's there for anyone who needs it, should someone have an issue at a GTG.

I will put up a picture of the Crank Shaft Pulley and its apparent ware shortly. I would appreciate if anyone could recommend a part# and or a website to purchase the part from. It appears the rubber seal in the pulley is the cause of the "slight wobble". Could this simply be repaired with a new rubber seal? Or must I replace the whole part?
Thanks!

Attached are pictures of the crank shaft pulley that apparently has some wobble. Can anyone confirm the issue? As well as possible solutions.

Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
the elastomer is gone from that pulley . DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR!! this is a catastrophic failure waiting to happen. this pulley must be replaced asap! oediscountparts.com has the pulley for about 250$ . free shipping. find an indy mechanic that works on m/b and have him install it. ask if he has a crank pulley install tool. if not do not let them install the pulley.
the torque for the NEW crank bolt which you must use is 150 ft/lbs plus 90*

Lasts a little longer as I have to drive it home and then arrange for the part. I took a look at the website. Could you provide me with the part number by any chance. Or the direct link so I do not order the wrong part. The local m/b dealer appears to be charging a similar price if anyone could please confirm the part number.
Thanks.
Re: Crank Shaft Pulley-Misfire Issue-Help
its your car to do with as you wish. i will tell you once that pulley comes off it will tear thru the front of your engine bay with a vengence. you could be replacing the water pump, alternator, a/c anything it comes in contact with including a new hod. drive it as you wish. you have been advised. triple AAA is about 100$ and includes 5 free tows. chaeaper than the cheapest part this will break
