This is my first post on the forum so please excuse if it is rookie-ish. My 2005 roadster is giving me fits. The local dealer did 2 oil changes, and shortly after each (one was over-filled and drained) the oil warning indicator (idiot light) would come on intermittently. It always had oil in it, but would light up for no reason. I just took it to an independant garage that I trust, and gave them Mobil 1 0w40 ECF to use to be sure I was getting what is spec'ed, also thinking this might cure my indicator issue. It did not. Now in fact the service LCD warning is flashing -2400, and the odometer has gone missing entirely. They tried everything they knew, but it is messed up. No other symptoms or issues, and it has a 3 month old battery. ANY suggestions or similar problems would be appreciated since I am baffled and as much as I love that car, I have low tolerance for things like this. Is there a way to reset the entire service warning system? Thanks in advance for any and all input.

 

Has a service reminder reset been done? Or is it just refusing to co operate?

FSS Reset:


1. Turn key to the ON/RUN position.
2. Within one second press the ****/button twice.
3. The present status for days or distance is displayed.
Within 10 seconds turn the key to OFF/
LOCK.
4. Press and hold the ****/button, while turning
the key to ON/RUN again. The present status for
days or distance is displayed once more. Continue
to hold the ****/button.
After approximately 10 seconds, a signal sounds and
the display shows 7,000 miles (Canada: 11,000 km) for
approximately 10 seconds.


5. Release the ****/button.

Edit: **** - button being the trip / reset button - stem in the instrument cluster..

 

I sincerely appreciate your QUICK response to my plight. I am however pretty sure the mechanic tried it, and I for sure tried it, but she just flashes -2400 (with two wrench icon) and no odometer on the upper of the two displays. No changes, beeps, or any sign of cooperation.

 

Well that's about all I've got for you, other than maybe an attempt at disconnecting the battery for about 15 minutes and then try the reset again?

 

I just re-read my response to your post and I hope you didn't take it the wrong way. I am kinda frustrated, but really do appreciate the advice. It's like 95 degrees in my garage .. think I'll wait until morning to tackle it !! have a great Sunday.

 

I know that feeling!.. started to get up at 5 this morning to get things done outside.. left hand brakes need painted etc.. lol. but @ 105 degrees.. well they only see one side of the car at a time anyways..

Oh, and not knowing how deep you've gone into the forum.. your throttle response should reset also.. so be ready for a more touchy pedal..

 

your mechanic more that likely broke your display because they didn't know how to properly reset it....just my 1st take on your plight... It never resets for me the 1st time, usually several tries before I get it to reset. Oil light will display if the fill wasn't done correctly. Patience when dealing with this little issue. But the oil change, and this display isn't something Chrysler or private shops have much luck with...

 

Xf's don't have oil sludge issues do they ?

 

The FSS reset worked after disconnecting the battery for a while. THANKS MRMIATA !! The odometer is back from holiday. The red oil warning light remains to be a mystery however, and comes on intermittently. I can live with that for the moment. Thanks forum members !

 

This also should do a throttle reset - enjoy the extra pep if you haven't done it before

I am curious about how the throttle response is affected by the FSS. Is there a limiter that increases as the oil wear and time increases? Very slick ... pun intended.

 

Now thats a slick question! LOL. Computer learns your driving style and adapts the throttle. So unless your constant lead foot.. it eases back the response.

 

No it is not related to the FSS or oil change intervals
These cars use a drive by wire system which means the throttle has no cable and the computer tells the car how to accelerate.
It can be reset by disconnecting the battery which is what they are referring to in the previous posts.


Another way to do a throttle reset is this way:

Keep the key in for this entire process.
1) Turn the key to the on (not start) position,
the position just before the starter turns over.

2) Press the gas pedal to the floor with the key in the "on" position.

3) Hold the pedal to the floor for five seconds, then turn the key back
to the "off" position (don't remove the key), then release the gas pedal.

4) Wait 2 mins. for a full alignment.

Summary: Key on, pedal down 5 sec, key off, pedal up, wait 2 minutes.

If this doesn't work, disconnect your neg. battery cable for 20 minutes.
This will re-set the parameters in the drive-by-wire

The Throttle is "Drive By Wire" and adapts to your particular driving style.

Why don't people just disconnect the negative terminal all the time to reset the throttle body , seems a whole lot easier Lol

 

Thanks for the great info. I am loving this forum !! I bought this car 2 yrs ago for my wife and since I only get the keys on weekends I really haven't gotten deep into it yet. Pretty sophisticated engineering. There needs to be a cheat sheet included on the sun visor for all the FSS tricks though.

 

How much oil are they putting in? If the oil is overfilled, you will get a high oil level alarm (mostly in curves or going downhill - at least, that is what mine did).

I only put in 8 quarts (not 8 1/2) when changing oil (per "Danimal") and don't get the light anymore.



Once you learn to do the FSS reset, it is easy and there is no reason to disconnect the battery. You just have to keep trying and follow the procedure in the manual. It is a known frustration to those trying to do it the first time - they make it hard so you can't accidentally reset it.


The Throttle response reset is easy if you follow Valky's post EXACTLY. It really IS simple to do.

 

Ok.. Mine came on and off this morning on my way to work.. which is where I'm at now, so pardon a dumb question, I don't have the manual in front of me...

I want to confirm that The Light alerts LOW OIL LEVEL, not LOW OIL PRESSURE...

Is this correct?

 

Correct. There is no warning of low oil pressure that I am aware of.
Anyone who can, correct me if I am wrong!
