Stupid MAF Question
Stupid MAF Question
I'm just wondering, when you get the bigger MAF like the on that TVT sold, or the MAF for something like a sl500 do you have to swap out the sensor itself, or are they interchangeable?
I got one for the sl500 (big 3-inch dia.) and put it on when I got my 74mm throttle body installed.
Now, when I start the car and begin to drive down the road, I noticed that it really wants to hesitate and kinda sputter, befor it warms up to normal operating temp. It never did that before. CAn anybody clue me in as to what is happening and what I need to do?
This was a straight install of the TB and the MAF, and I also reset the throttle. Any help would be great, thanks.

Re: Stupid MAF Question
I think you're getting the Throttle body and the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) confused.
The throttle body is a big chunk of metal with a huge hole in it with a butterfly valve.
The MAF is a plastic sensor a couple of inches long with a few (3 If I remember correctly) wires on it, that connects to the plastic elbow that connects to the throttle body.
It is possible that if you pulled your MAF you got it dirty or broken.... spray cleaners are available at parts stores to try to clean them. Unfortunately Mercedes sourced MAF's are known to go bad and need replacement.

Re: Stupid MAF Question
Hey LGV,
Did you ever get this fixed. I've done the same mod (74mm Throttle Body, SL55 Maf and C240 Cover) with the same results. Codes show Banks 1 and 2 rich which causes sputtering and hesitation at the start. Also get engine warning light. Anyone else know the fix (tune-up?)

Re: Stupid MAF Question
I actually did get it fixed. It turned out that I hadn't fully seated one of the hoses. Also, I didn't quite like the way the MAF sensor itself was working, so I took it off* and put the OEM sensor back in the new housing. It runs great now, with the new housing and the OEM sensor.
* you need a 5-Point tamper bit for this. I forgot if it is the OEM or the new one. I'll have to check since I still have the OEM Housing. You can get the bits on Ebay, cheap.

Re: Stupid MAF Question
Thanx for the info, LGV. I had considered doing the same. I actually scoured through the M/B forums and found out that the generic MAFs are the problem. I bought one of the cheapos on ebay; What a mistake. Luckily, I found a used SL Bosch OEM one at a salvage yard down the road and managed to talk them into swapping it for the new one I had. Solved all my problems.
Just to remind everyone...only use the Bosch OEM 3" MAF. And if you want a new one, make sure to buy it from a reputable parts dealer and that it has the Bosch OEM p/n 0280217810. Ebay will list some of them as being Boschs, but alot of them are foreign knock-offs with the name "Bosch" stamped on them. A quick look around the net showed that AutohausAZ had the best price for the OEM Boschs. Around $150.
