Project Crossfire - a Rotrex Supercharged Limited!
Re: Rotrex Guy
A real and honest pursuit at that. I didn't buy a car that was 90% done and add a pulley and call myself a tuner. I build them from scratch.
In fact, the rotrex, aem, and injectors are all in as of today. Now I'm waiting on the dashdyno and finishing up the projects I have on the table. I'm about half way done putting a rotrex (a real live kit of my own design) on a spyder. Then I have to do some work on a 2zz, finish putting my car back to stock THEN i'll finally get to make some progress.

Re: Rotrex Guy
It wasn't a jab, I was stating a fact. If you fit the pulley category, sorry but that isn't me. It is simply a matter of time. Say different and you can buy me a steak dinner when I prove you wrong
edit: oledoc2u, I meant this is in a sincere way. I wasn't trying to be an ***. I'll try to word my thoughts better next time.

Re: Rotrex Guy
we shalll see, and I really don't appreciate someone putting me down or my car down...I bought what I like...and I have owned a lot of nice cars in my time...and I wouldn't put anyone down for what they drive or what they do...but, I quess you know what you can do with your full machine shop...and there isn't anything you need to prove to me...you need to prove it to those who own N/A's....I quit building cars a long time ago, I grew out of it. I now just like to modify what I have, but keep it dependable...and soon join the 11 second club....that is all I do...I have watched this forum for a long time, and have observed a lot of people chasing HP...I was looking to watch your participation as well, but not anymore...I'll stick to the old club...there aren't so quick to mouth off, but are quick to help....sounds like you have a problem with the SRT crowd...we shall see how well you do...35 posts on here, and you are now the expert...here we go again...
Re: Rotrex Guy
You come on with a sarcastic comment and now I'm insulting you and your first born. I was supposed to think that what you posted was interest?? Oh well, I guess that one flew right by me.
I don't have a problem with the "SRT" crowd but I do with posers in general (on any board). If you fit in that category I guess we won't be friends
Am I an expert? Not with this car I'm not. However, I am at least on the fast track.
Look, you think I'm mouthy. I think you are strangely defensive. Oh well, I'm willing to leave it at that.

Hey Web!
Sounds like your still making progress. How about some pics?
Looking forward to finally seeing some one take a project like this from start to completion. As Doc mentioned we have seen a lot of new folks come promising great things only to see them fade away along with their projects. Down deep I'm sure the majority of the XF family want you to succeed but be gentle with us. We love our cars and some of us may not take to kindly to unkind words or comments.
Many have tried to go where you are going.
Here's hoping that you make it!
Good luck with the project!

Re: Rotrex Guy
You already have the AEM wired in? Mind me asking where you ended up putting it? I hope the added wires were long enough and the fact that some of the lettering on them not being there anymore wasn't a problem with following the wire down and then it changing colors and then going back. I needed to snake it through the hole in the ECU box under the hood through the firewall so it needed an extension.
Glad to see you're making progress. FYI, spend a lot of time on MAF simulation and get that bugger ironed out before you start getting to far into it. It will make things a lot easier later on if you're using just the MAP on the AEM to change your fuel maps.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

In my excitement, I was hoping to be able to jump on this much faster but I have to be fair to those that have been waiting for me patiently on other projects. I also have a custom turbo to put on a car that sat in some shop for 7 years, but I plan on working that in with my car. And yes, that isn't a typo, this poor guy left his car at a shop for 7 years along with 10k of his money and when he got it back it was stripped. Just two weeks before the shop filed for bankruptcy the owner had promised this guy he would make good on their deal. In the end, the spyder owner ended up having to pay another 1k to get his car out of storage and someone had given it the once over stealing everything he had paid for and more!
I didn't want anymore spyder work, but I felt so bad for him I had to offer to help get him back on the road. It is a humdinger of a story.
BTW - Rcompart you mentioned a cheat sheet that you had for installing the AEM. Do you mind emailing that to me so that I can take a look? Any shortcuts you can provide would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I was looking at the wires yesterday and I'm hoping that I can see most of the labels once I pull off the shrink tubing. I could on the few that I tested so I think it will be ok.
As far as the Rotrex goes, it is going to be tight. I have to throttle down the intake side anyway with a restrictor so I'm hoping that I can squeeze a reducing silicone 90 in between the rotrex and the shock tower. If not, it isn't a deal breaker by any means, it just gets more complicated.
I had planned on running the rotrex off the existing pulley system in that position. If it won't make it, I'll have to add a pulley to the crank and/or water pump. I didn't want to have to go that route because that means that I will have to make a pulley and mounting bracket with an integrated tensioner (and potentially modify the fan shroud) versus just a mounting bracket.
Oh well, one step at a time!
Re: Rotrex Guy
Ok, last post then I have to get in the garage. I mentioned the restrictor I will use to control boost and wanted to share a few pics. The C38 also came in a little bigger then expected. I snapped a pic of it compared to the smaller C30. The other photo is of an AC relocation kit I have to have for installing the rotrex on the spyder. My machinist and good friend is the greatest and everything but the nuts, bolts, and AN fittings are custom made. He takes my rough prototypes and turns them into works of art. Also, once I get the pulley/boost/restrictor size nailed down I'll probably be installing one of my billet Rotrex pulleys.

Re: Rotrex Guy
I can tell you Web that I am one of the longest running members of this forum, as you can see by my join date. I was also pretty good friends with the one guy who swapped an srt-6 motor into his n/a 6 speed, HDDP. I also worked with a company to bring new tuning software (the 'newness" was a large debatable heated drama event, but I regress).
You are not the first person with knowledge or tools that has tried to tackle this task. You also aren't the first to throw some money at it. I am not saying that you can't do it, but the spyder is a completely different car, doesn't have anywhere near the type of ecu issues we have and has a ton of boosting options. There was one supposed twin turbo base crossfire built by a company called aps, if I recall correctly, who disappeared after putting up pics of the car. Another company was said to undergo the same project, but ended up ripping people off, another situation in which I helped community members by leading a virtual crusade to get people their money back, lol.
I would say there have been 6 serious attempts at this, and they all either quit or disappeared. HDDP through a ton of money at this car and worked with some of the best ecu engineers around to tune this car and try and figure it out, as well as working with people who actually built these ecu's and software, again I believe memory serves me correct.
I don't know if derek, hddp, is still around or not, but you should contact him. I know he had left to work on some t.v. show, but im sure he checks in every now and then, he campaigned his crossfire in NASA events for years taking several trophies.
Good luck, but don't burn bridges or assume you know things, because every car is different, and mercedes is notorious for having difficult ecu's to crack. I pissed off a bunch of people in my day just telling it how it is, but didn't assume I knew more than everyone. People here have spent years with this car, you may end up needing their help one day. Members here will help you literally as much as possible when it comes to boosting this car because we have all been dying to do it.
I believe Kleeman still sells a kit for this motor, you may also want to try and get in touch with them. All said, good luck, I wish you the best. I've been waiting for someone to put out a kit so i could grab another crossfire, since they are almost free now, and I don't really want a super high power dd these days since I have the track car. Good luck!!

Re: Rotrex Guy
Thanks for the well wishes. As for my apparent brashness, let me clarify and explain my position. I don't mean as I've stated to come on here and tell anyone anything. For me it is very simple.
I didn't buy this car, then wish it was faster and wonder what options were out there for me to consider. I looked, I studied, and then set out to find the best specimen I could in my area with the intention of installing a Rotrex. In other words, I knew what I was getting into; it was premeditated. Therefore, I am into this project for much more then just the SC parts alone and it would cost me dearly if I do not succeed. For me, failure is simply not an option.
Better yet, I've been here done that more times than you know. I've been working on cars/boats since I was 10 years old. My dad was among other things a mechanic and owned a shop and then a marina. I grew up in this stuff and when i hit my late teens became a serious "modder", engine builder, then ultimately put it all together as a tuner. The spyder is by far the breadth of my experience, it is simply the "latest" thing under my belt. It is also something to be proud of as I have brought more innovation to that platform then anyone I know.
That said, and getting off my own soap box. My position and/or philosophy is that there is always a way. Always. It very simply comes down to how far you are willing to go and/or how much effort are you willing to put into something to make it happen.
That is me in a nutshell. Yes, I have experience and have tricks that I have yet to see implemented here. However, it is less of me "knowing more" then my attitude in general that one way or another I will find a way. Of course, I would love and appreciate any help that I can get and will ask for it when I hit each brick wall along the way. Hopefully I can draw upon the knowledge on this board and supplement it with enough hard work and determination to get the job done this time.
That said, I have to get to work cleaning out my other projects so I can put up or shut up as far as the crossfire is concerned. This is the last I'm going to talk about "will this", "can that", until I have something to put on the table and show some real life progress.

I'm joking, I'm joking!
Looking forward to your progress in this Web.

Re: Rotrex Guy
I doubt it is dead. Sometimes you just run out of things to talk about until you acutually start doing it. I like the Rotrex units becuase the are more compact than other superchargers and hope he gets it running.
I would suggest you get your own Mercedes Star Diagnostic system. The Chinese clones work well and will cost under $1,000. I suggest buying one without the lap top and sourceing a T-30 locally or looking at a clone that works on any lap top. Let me know if you need info in this area. Also the guys at LET are very familiar with tuning boosted MB's and have experience with Star DAS and Developer mode.
