Post a link to the Google search thing you posted up above. I want to know if that was a general statement or if it was specifically directed towards a Mercedes.

Jared
It was just a general statement, sorry. But the fact is some stuff is sending to ECU a faulty signal.

So now that I am on break and have some time to search, it appears that the lack of signal coming from my knock sensor can certainly cause the performance issues that I am having.

Basically what I questioned earlier appears to be true. It's called fail safe mode though, not limp mode and will not necessarily trigger a CEL.... which I currently don't have. My symptoms match exactly. Reduced performance on the highway or under load with increased fuel consumption. This thing drank a 1/2 tank in 100 miles.

Next project, figure out if I got the knock sensor plugged in all the way.

I do not think the crossfire has an engine limp mode,,, I have been into limp mode at least 50 times ,as the V8 put out so much power that the car (transmission) goes into limp mode when you do something that the sensors don't know what you did.. You can drive in 1 st and to the top of 2nd gear ,when going into 3rd gear the tranny goes into neutral (limp mode) once it does that you can come to a full stop turn off engine, restart and you are ready to go again,,, On the drag strip i have gone into limp mode on the burn out and or on launch and my 1/8 mile speed and time is almost the same as if it did not happen. on that i say no the engine does not have limp anything.

Tranny is shifting normally as far as I can tell. I'm pretty sure it's the lack of signal from the knock sensor causing or at the least contributing to my lack of power.

I'll give the cable a tug and see if it pops off. I thought I had it plugged in all the way. I had to buy a 3 foot long flat blade screwdriver so I could maneuver the connector under the manifold to plug it in. I may not have gotten it on all the way.

No CEL, and low rpm/part throttle response is great. Anything over 1/2 throttle doesn't produce much in the way of power. It does accelerate, just not very fast.

I'm going to take Andrews recommendation and do a fuel pressure test on the road, and I will do some data logging to see what's happening.

Besides that, it runs great, idles great, and will put you back in the seat in 1st gear.

I'm getting ready to be sent home from work for a couple of weeks, my wife already has been sent home with pay. Daughter is out of school because they're all closed. I'll have some time to get it sorted out.

BTW, I really like the ride with the new shocks and tires. The car doesn't pull me around anymore when I hit ruts or un-even pavement.

That's great to hear. Wishing you all the best with the lower power issue.

One of my knock sensors is not plugged in all the way, or it is bad. I talked to Andrew in AU yesterday and he informed me that without that signal, the engine will definitely be running with reduced power.

I'll fix it for sure, but now that I have the engine installed, I will likely have to remove the intake manifold. Both of the knock sensors are under it. It's a project, but not a difficult one.

The TCU tune seems to have done what it was supposed to do, the car pulls good and makes noise and tire smoke before the throttle is dialed back.

I'll figure out the knock sensor before I do anything else. I've got a new fuel filter on the way too.

Sounds like you got it under control. Looking forward to the results. This has been a great journey

While you are doing the knock sensor project it will be nice to replace the sensor as well

It's not a typical failure item. I will check the resistance and if it tests good, I'll leave it alone.

I'm betting that I didn't get it plugged in all the way when I swapped the harness.

It's the left side knock sensor and the connector doesn't point straight back, it was at a 45 degree angle so it was pretty tedious getting it plugged in.... or at least I thought I did.

As you can see from the picture below, it is really, really tight under there. You can't even see the left side sensor in this picture.

After 2 days of driving, put about 200 miles on it, P0330 (left knock sensor open or short circuit) was the only current fault code, with no stored codes.

Ordered the intake manifold gaskets, EGR gasket, and a new set of breather hoses.

I'll pull the intake manifold this weekend to get at the connector for the left knock sensor.

Figured I would clean up the EGR valve and replace all the vacuum lines while I have it apart.

Got started on the water pump replacement a few hours ago..... and I'm annoyed.

I bought a GMB pump, which is a good quality pump. the only 2 hole on the casting that should be threaded, are not threaded, and the bushing for the alternator bolt is just a tad to small.

I'll pick up a tap tomorrow and a drill bit to open up the bushing.

I used a large flat storage tub to collect 99% of the brand new MB antifreeze. I will strain it through a coffee filter and back in it will go.

I spun the old pump and it sounds like a bag of marbles. No shaft play though and it wasn't leaking.

GMB is banned forever from my parts list

No threads and one more thing is confusing me.
GMB has a hose connection in the red circle area but Mopar and some other brands like Gates don't have it. Looks like it is plugged.
I guess the stock Xfire water pump doesn't require that connection.
