Default Supercharger oil change

There is a PDF on this subject by 70GT6 - CLICK
I am soon to do this oil change, the car has not quite done 40,000 miles but why not change it anyway.
The PDF explains how to do it very well but I am sure that many do not know what it looks like on the inside where the oil is. The oil is just inside the separate gearbox casing behind the supercharger pulley magnet.
Here are the two halves of that casing, the front half has the drive plate which is attached to the SC pulley shaft on which the SC pulley is mounted. The rear half of the casing has the two gears which are attached to the shafts on which the rotors are attached, note that the gears are of two different sizes which results in the two impellers rotate at two different rates. The two different speeds are what pushes the air rearward at a higher pressure.

You can see the end of the filler plug on the bottom right in the top picture and a web for the bolt which separates the area where the oil will settle. Removing the oil in the section below the oil plug will leave a lesser amount the other side of the web. I will see if that are is accessible with a small hose attached to my oil vacuum extractor and report back. I think a small hose will pass under the drive plate in the front casing.

A view with the rotors. The rotors mesh with each other but do not touch. If they do touch the SC is toast, so it is important that the gears do not wear too fast. Clean oil is good oil for lubrication.

I obtained the photos some years back and thank the anonymous photographer.

Dave, nice pictorial and explanation of what it looks like! Kudos to you. I did mine a few months ago and used the little syringe extractor with a length of hose to draw the old oil out. I jacked up the left rear of the car so as to get most of the oil out. If memory serves me I pulled over 3 oz. of the old out.

Regards,

Regards,
Thanks, I think the volume is closer to 4 fl.oz. But we shall see when I get to it.
I think somewhere a kit is available with a syringe filled with 4 oz. of jet oil.
I have found that 3.7 fl.oz. is the volume required for the SLK32 AMG.

180 being as we share the same engine with SLK32, are you saying that the SRT requires more jet oil than the SLK32? I'm just making sure I'm understanding everything right because I'm about to change mine as well. Thanks again for all the info you share on here, its quite invaluable for all us forum members.

180 great pics. I have never seen the inside before.
I would think everybody will get a little different amount of oil out of the fill plug. Syringe with hose for removal is not like a bottom drain plug.
Fill to till it runs out and you know you have added the correct amount.

I was answering the previous post where he said 3 oz and I said it was closer to 4 oz.
I said the SLK32 used 3.7 oz, because that is what I found by searching. We would use the same amount.
I shall try to suck oil from both sides of that bottom boss. I do not think tilting the car by a normal amount will get too much out the one side. There has to be a gap on the drive plate side In front of the large gear when you think about it.

Great pics of the rotors !
I know rotary blowers have been around for awhile but from an engineering viewpoint , still quite a challenge to design , test , & document for manufacture these beautiful little high speed creatures !

They are precision machines so it is best to look after them and an oil change is about all you can do.
If the bearings in it fail and the rotors touch you have some scrap metal to get rid of.
I have pics of the SC in pieces and it shows that bearing replacement is a pretty easy job if you have the equipment to do it. Let’s hope we do not need to..

to get fix of
I Googled "to get fix of" and believe it or not, Google never heard of it.
Is that a British phrase meaning "to get rid of" ?

I hardly ever edit my posts and even if I do they seem perfect just like me.

We used that phrase up in Pennsylvania when I was growing up.
