Question for SRT owners
Question for SRT owners
Just bought my first Crossfire (06 coupe) & have been very curious about the SRT 6's as far as added maintenance & typical problems beyond a base coupe ?
Also I've noticed several low millage SRT's for sale w/ unrealistic numbers of pre owners ? Are those car flippers or unhappy owners ? --maybe a tough question ?
Eventually , if I can find one , I'll probably own a SRT coupe . I guess what I'm looking for is a comparison of the base & SRT as far as owner management to justify buying & maintaining . I'm a long time motorhead & am pretty picky caring for our vehicles . I think owning an SRT is maybe high on the status need which is not my thing & the 06 is a pleasure , but being a forever kid curious about mechanical wants , I need to fulfill them while I can if possible
thanks for any comments.

Re: Question for SRT owners
Mine isn't a garage queen, i don't subscribe to that life. Never understood paying money for a car to watch it sit in a garage then sell it so somebody else can drive it, lol whatever rocks your boat though.
Maintenance is going to be higher on the SRT-6 and if something needs to be replace it will be a little harder to find some parts as some are exclusive to the SRT-6 example, air pump, alternator. They are different and will be double what a base crossfire equivalent would cost to replace even if found used.
I will say I think all crossfires are reliable though and they are easy to work on if you know how to turn wrenches considering the platform and motor dates back to the mid 90's.

Re: Question for SRT owners
I had a base coupe for two years, then got an SRT6 roadster. They are two completely different cars in terms of driver experience. Neither gave me much maintenance grief, especially since we have such an active enthusiast community. Yes, the supercharger does up your maintenance cost risk some, and these cars do need their tires replaced more often than most. You decide if it's worth it to you.
Re: Question for SRT owners
Newbie here. Have owned our '05 SRT6 SSB coupe 15 months now. Have put 5,000 + miles on her. Car's got 45K+.miles on her now. Put 1,700 miles of that on her taking her to the Dragon a week ago.. THAT was a blast. She's a fair weather car. But, should we get caught in the rain, she ain't going to shrink and the wipers work . No unusual costs of ownership here. Tires, battery (adding the extra ground from the battery to the Bell housing),change tranny, supercharger and diff fluids. Generally, just maintaining a good car. Have to tell ya' this car opened my eyes on how she handles in the twisties. That Tail of the Dragon really educated me on her capabilities...she's bone stock and handled the 318 turns in 11 miles like she's on rails. Very impressed. Go for it! Here's a couple of pics of her in action. Enjoy!
Re: Question for SRT owners
Great your having the time of your life! I know when I bought my 2008 NEW, and went on my first TOJ, I kept up pretty good with the SRT's. This car (N/A Limited Coupe) was awesome in the turns and twisties. The only time the group in front of me pulled away, was on the straights. PPL can vouch for that and there are a few posts about how 'crazy' I was on that TOJ. So, if you LOVE handling, both cars are GREAT (SRT-6 and N/A). If you love getting there mostly straight down the road, of course the SRT-6 gets n goes very quickly. I do wish I originally bought one of the lower priced SRT's but I am absolutely happy with the exceptional handling and performance of my N/A. If you have room for a second car (I don't and Mrs will not let me build another garage), I say go ahead and buy one (keep the N/A).

On the same platform yet two very different cars. No matter what you do to your NA, even if you could achieve 300plus HP and you can't, it will never have the instantaneous acceleration of the Super-charged SRT-6. I love the SRT in traffic but the 6 spd NA is a pure driving machine and I prefer it on long trips and in the twisties. I have never had a problem keeping up with the SRT crowd in the twisties. This car was built to be driven, and I don't mean push and go down the dragstrip.
Maintenance issues are about the same but the SRT does tend to eat more tires,

Re: Question for SRT owners
I find the opposite,,, my V6 SRT or My V8 SRT 6+2, or my limited wagon,,, i have had very little problems from 2006 to now ,,,I have owned 2 srt 6's and 2 V8 srt6+2 ,, the problems i did have ,, i have replaced 1 axle , 1 driveshaft , 1 water pump , 1 alt , 4 or 5 RCM's ,12 to 15 sets of tires , 4 sets of drag radials, 1 radiator, both motor mounts, 1 differential and 1 starter ,,,that is on 2 cars and the limited wagon, both cars were SRT 6's that Rudy converted to V8's using Mercedes supercharged 5.5 V8's,, and no one on this forum drives their car 1/10 as hard as i do. so if something should fsil it would on my car. don't forget my car was the test car for the wave-trac ,,over 100 runs down the drag strip just to test the wavetrac,, total as a v6 and v8 both cars (and the limited wagon) i have a little over 700 runs down the drag strip.

My car is a DD with the typical mods mostly everybody does to there srt-6 178 crank pulley, eurocharged tune, dcai, super cooler and approaching 200k miles. I did get this car until 100k and it was bone stock when I got it, and i modded it within 15k miles.
To date everything ive had to replace due to failure, supercharger, alternator, intercooler, air pump, airbag module, rcm, steering pivot arm, rear-wheel bearing, cps 3x. The rest of the stuff Ive replace due to mileage/maintenance such as ball joints, upper and lower control arms, all the fluids, brakes and rotors etc.
Re: Question for SRT owners
i am retired and don't drive to work every day but i do drive it every day.
Re: Question for SRT owners
Now that is funny , you don't know me (on the forum not in person) all my crossfires are daily drivers my V8 that i drive now has 182000 miles on it, i installed the V8 in Oct.2018 with 170,600 ,,was bringing it to the dragon but it was not ready . the engine has 52000 and the tranny has 12000 . the engine was installed with 42000 and the tranny was new
i am retired and don't drive to work every day but i do drive it every day.

Re: Question for SRT owners
Can anyone tell me what the 2 gold colored round kind of bell like parts are that rest in front of both intake boxes? They are tee'd together by a metal line and the line then goes down the right side of the engine. See the picture. Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Question for SRT owners
I think all your questions have been answered. I have one of each, and enjoy them for different reasons. It's a blast to shift the roadster and a different blast to accelerate hard in the SRT6. I don't abuse either car and have not had any unusual repairs. I just do an fall oil change before putting them in storage. I started removing the batteries and putting them on float chargers the last few years.
One other note: aside from the engine internals being different (to accommodate the increased power from supercharging), the SRT6 has different shocks and imho rides more harshly than the non-SRT6. I have driven my roadster from MI to CT, WI, FL at different times but the SRT6 only to WI. It's just not as comfortable a cruiser as the roadster. And, of course, neither ride as nicely as my 2011 Audi A4.

Re: Question for SRT owners
Have one more question & will lump it into this thread .
Can the SRT6 spoiler be removed without detrimental issues to the back deck ?
I've never cared for these "growths" on the rear of a well sculpted vehicle -- especially the early 911's . Possibly if in a racing mode it adds a little rear tire squat ?
Thanks

If you go fast it is necessary for down pressure on the car. Or, you can take it off and duct-tape the hole left there. If you remove it and you are involved in an accident be prepared to have a big problem with lawyers as a minimum.
