Won't Start
Won't Start
Had the car 3(SRT coupe) weeks and it will not start. Started her up on friday and ran it about 10 min. I wanted to take it out but it was wet and she was still clean.
Today I go to try and start the car and the starter kicks in but she won't start. This happened 3 x and then nothing on the starter. I check the forum and start playing with the RCM. My friend is an electrician and car knowledgeable so we start checking all the fuses and checking the relays on the RCM. They all seem to be working but the engine just won't turn.
Finally I suggested to disconnect the battery to see if it some how resets itself. Again it turns over fort 3 starts then nothing. Lights are on, no bad battery and all fuses are checked for continuity. Disconnect again and 3 attempts then nothing.I did this procedure a few times hoping it would start. I had the car towed to Chrysler and now it is out of my hands.
Anyone have any such issues? ARGH

Re: Won't Start
The symptoms are obvious: The SKREEM is not reading the RFID chip in the key, so your issue is:
1) The key's RFID chip has gone bad (not likely)
2) The key's RFID chip has fallen out of the key fob (if your key hasn't been crushed and the case is cracked, this is also not likley)
3) THe black ring around the ignitions switch is an antenna the couples to the RFID in the key, it is no longer connected to the SKREEM (not likely unless youve had the dash apart
4) The SKREEM module is bad (probably the issue, there is quite a history of them going bad)
IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT: If you disconnect and reconnect the battery and try the 3 starts enough times, the ECU will do a self-destruct and you will be buying an ECU as well. I hope the dealer knows this and gets to the bottom of it before that happens.

Re: Won't Start
With automatics.. you don't have to actually "hold" the key to start position .. just bump it and a relay interface cranks the car for XX seconds or till ignition. But you have been given all the sound advice that can be given by the others here on the post.
About the only thing I can add.. we had a member with a dealer replacement on the skreem at a cost of $600 .. most report $800 .. then you get some that come with the economy size Vaseline for the whole shop to greet you..

Sorry to hear that you took it to the dealer, that's usually a mistake. With a friend who is knowledgeable about trons and cars, and the forum, you maybe could have handled this and saved some $s.
Re: Won't Start
You "can" get one programmed from the dealer.. a facebook member fixed his SRT6 this way. I'm not "sure" if he got a discount or standard price (he's working at a shop of a sort) .. but his price was $200. You get your VIN and Mileage and they send your part in.. I don't have a clue on a used one.. but would put a small bet on having to be "blanked out" and programmed to your specific car.
Re: Won't Start
If you buy a used SKREEM, it has been programmed with a certain RFID code. It is looking for that code from your keyfob. If you order one thru Chrysler, they look up the VIN and order one programmed for the RFID code that was put in the original one from the factory.
If you buy one from wrecked/used car, it will want to see the RFID code that IT was set up for. Now, I GUESS if you bought the keys to the car that the SKREEM came from and transplanted the RFID chips from THOSE keys into YOUR keys - it might work. It's just that the SKREEM may ALSO have some sort of ID code in it that handshakes with the PTCM. SO, the only way to know is to try.
But the 100% sure way to go is to order one from the dealer.
Um, here's a thing - can Rob at Needswings order a SKREEM? I know he can order KEYS - can he order a SKREEM?
Greg, do you know?

If I was Rob.. I'd steer clear of these myself.. just for potential of unhappy customer relations alone..
SKREEM OPERATION
The Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM) has the following functions: receiving and evaluating the Radio Frequency (RF) keyless entry remote signal, actuation of door locks in conjunction with the Central Locking Pump/Security System Module, and enabling the vehicle theft security alarm with confirmation via the turn signals.
When the RKE transmitter is operated, an RF signal is transmitted. If the SKREEM recognizes the RF signal as valid, it actuates the Central Locking Pump/Security System Module through the Body Control Module. The vehicle is then locked or unlocked through the power locks system.
Connected to the SKREEM is a Sentry Key Antenna Ring which surrounds the ignition lock cylinder. When the ignition is switched on, the Sentry Key Antenna Ring is supplied with power. A data block is transmitted inductively via the Sentry Key Antenna Ring to the SKREEM and then onto the Powertrain Control Module. If the antenna ring data block content is invalid or if vehicle battery power is too low to build up enough power for the antenna ring, the Powertrain Control Module will not receive the proper signal. This is displayed with the message “Start Error” in the Instrument Cluster.
The SKREEM contains an RF transceiver and a microprocessor. The SKREEM transmits RF signals to and receives RF signals from the ignition key transponder through a tuned Sentry Key Antenna Ring that is wired to the SKREEM. If the Sentry Key Antenna Ring is not mounted properly around the ignition lock cylinder housing, communication problems between the SKREEM and the ignition key may arise. These communication problems will result in ignition key transponder-related faults. The SKREEM also communicates over the Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), the Instrument Cluster, the Body Control Module (BCM), and/or the DRB III T scan tool.
The SKREEM retains in memory the ID numbers of any ignition key transponder that is programmed into it. For added system security each SKREEM is programmed with a unique secret key code. This code is stored in memory, sent over the CAN data bus to the PCM, and is encoded to the
transponder of every ignition key that is programmed into the SKREEM. In the event that a SKREEM replacement is required, the secret key code can be transferred to the new SKREEM from the PCM using the DRB IIIT scan tool and the ignition key system replacement programming procedure. Proper completion of the ignition key system initialization will allow the existing ignition keys to be programmed into the new SKREEM so that new keys will not be required. In the event that the original secret key code cannot be recovered, SKREEM replacement will also require new ignition keys. The DRB IIIT scan tool will alert the technician during the key reprogramming procedure if new ignition keys are required.
The sentry key system performs a self-test each time the ignition switch is turned to the ON/RUN position and will store fault information in the form of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in SKREEM memory if a system malfunction is detected. The SKREEM can be diagnosed and any stored DTCs can be retrieved using a DRB IIIT scan tool.
Refer to the appropriate diagnostic information.

Re: Won't Start
??? I do not know about our SKREEM module, I'm asking if anyone knows (for sure) when a SKREEM is programmed with your VIN, and then installed (like that company that 'repairs' them), does the SLREEM learn the RFID chips when first started? The reason I ask, I have an F body Camaro, and it is having a BCM issue. If I order a new BCM and install it, the first time it is started it 'locks' in the passkey II resistor chip (one of 15 values) used in the security system. I know it is a GM BCM (not German SKREEM), just wonder if after a VIN encode, will it (upon first crank) lock the key rfid codes like my 2002 F body passkey resistor code 'learn'. I have no idea how this question could be answered as the people who provide the service would lose revenue. They sure do command quite a high price for this part (Chrysler/MB/Reprogrammers), for sure... Good luck with getting your car running! ???
??? Was there ever a member who bought a new SKREEM, and tried to install it outright? Seems all I am reading about that one part, it has to be VIN programmed. They used to say that about the GM "F" body BCM as well. ???

Re: Won't Start
Thanks all, so looks it like the car pretty much has to go to a dealer to get programmed if any issues arise. Any other way seems like a crap shoot which ultimately may lead to a dealer anyways. The one thing is the dealer is not responsible if my unit malfunctions. I found a certified MB shop nearby which I will contact to see if they handle the AMG model. If so that may be a better route next time. Anyone have any experience going that avenue?

Re: Won't Start
Not specifically related to SKREEM. However, my local Mercedes dealer happy works on my limited Crossfire and will do about anything, with the exception of programming. The Mercedes dealer told me they can read most codes, but can not program, because of the differences in the two systems. Crossfire's DRB III and Mercedes SDS. Doesn't hurt to ask your indep, but be prepared for problems if he decides to take the job.

Was it a used SKREEM? Sorry, I do not recall.
Used SKREEM modules can be had for less than $50.
