Buying/Trading for 2005 SRT 6
Buying/Trading for 2005 SRT 6
I'm new to posting on forums so if I posted in the wrong spot I apologize. I currently have a 2005 durango SLT hemi with 147000 miles for sale and I was contacted by a guy with an 05 SRT 6 with 85000 miles for a straight up trade. To me it seems like a great deal. Does this sound too good to be true? What should I be looking for when I see the car in person? Any input would be great. Thanks .

Sounds too good to be true to me.
KBB on yours is ballpark 6k-7k, the SRT6 ( if in decent shape ) should be in the 10k-12k range.
You will want to run a VIN check for damage, make sure the car has a clean title ( not a salvage title ).
Drive the car, make sure it has full power across the range.
A quick look at the engine will tell you if the owner really cared about the car, most on this forum are SPOTLESS !!!!
Make sure the 5 speed auto shifts smoothly, use the manual slap stick functions also.
Check the underside of the doors for rust/corrosion, also dig into the trunk well looking for signs of moisture due to water leaks.
Is this a roadster ? If so, then add another 2k or so to the KBB valuation and check the rear window glass to fabric bond..

Thanks ala_xfire. While I was posting he texted me back with some back story on why he wanted to trade. He says he has a baby now and needs a larger vehicle. Why he's willing to take a financial loss I can only make assumptions. 1. Being in Michigan he's never going to sell that car now with winter approaching. 2. Must have money or credit issues and has no other option. On another note my durango is very clean and has upgraded wheels/tires and Aspen trim package. Looks like a Chrysler Aspen basically.

I was thinking the same thing, the crossfire isn't a fast mover on the resale market, although a lot of us here think that may change in the future, especially with an SRT6. I can only imagine selling one when you're knee deep in snow. I recently did the same thing as you are thinking. I had an older (1998) BMW 528i, it was a clean car, my old car given to my daughter, she graduated from UCI and I gave her a new CNG Civic, and had this sitting in my shop for the past two years, edging 180k miles with not much of a resale value. I saw a 75k mile Crossfire nearby on Craig's list and noticed it had been on the market for a long time, he had dropped his price from 9k to 8 and then 7. I called him and offered my Beemer and 2k for the Crossfire. He wanted 4k difference and I passed. Two months later, he called and asked if my offer was still good, I said yes and now have two Crossfires. He was trying to sell it - undetailed with the key acting up, small wonder it didn't sell. He wanted a bigger car and now has one that will fit his needs. Trading is great when it works out for both parties.

Luckily, I have both - an '05 Durango and an SRT-6. But, just a couple of things to keep in mind that haven't been mentioned:
The SRT has 85K on it - I would bet it needs a transmission service as that often gets overlooked - estimate about $500 if a shop does it.
I would bet that at least the left motor mount is shot - you will be able to tell if the shifter pulls forward when you get on it, or pop the hood and rev the car while under a load and see if the left side of the engine lifts abnormally high (be very careful if you do it this way) - estimate about $450 if they (the shop) only change the left, maybe $600 if they do both.
Still, if you want to get into a rare, two door rocket, it would be a good trade if you have something else to use to get around in the snow.
Good luck!!

I would keep it, I think they're at the bottom of their market right now, you should be able to have a lot of fun with it with very little depreciation, in fact, you might even enjoy some appreciation. Add to the fact you're getting more value than your trade. It's a lot of car for what you're paying, a one mechanic hand built AMG Mercedes motor isn't nothing to sneeze at.

Re: Buying/Trading for 2005 SRT 6
I believe you have been offered a very good deal by the information provided. Actually, it could be a good swap on both ends for different reasons.
I was once offered a Morgan as an even swap an El Dorado convertible I hated. I hesitated too long. That was in the mid seventies and I am still kicking myself.

Gray, is a rare color for sure, but will show a lot of wear if he didn't take care of it. inner cooler pumps go bad and most think the car has serious mechanical problems. many here have benefited from knowing this and buying their cars under market value. Mileage is nothing on the benz motor, especially a hand built AMG motor. Moister getting into the trunk from the leaking spoiler mounts can cause havoc with the electricals in there, so make sure door locks work with the remotes and such. Sticky ignition key, RCM module can cause a starting/no start problem as well. ALL easy fixes with how to's on here...... Good luck...if you pass, I have a '99 Tahoe in great shape I would trade him with $$$$$ LOL.
