Default auxiliary air pump

I SHUT OFF MY SRT-6 AND when walking away i could hear a loud spinning noise from under hood so i opened the hood and the AUXILIARY AIR PUMP part # 0-580-000-021 816 was spinning with the key in off and i could smell like a wire burning so i pulled the 2 wire prong from the unit and lit it cool plunged it back in to see what was happening and nothing it seems OK i start the car drive to work and it seems OK ......i really don't know what this unit does except its for smog from what i read so far....can my car run without this unit or will it cause Moore problems....has anyone Else had this problem?? it seem fine but maybe i should replace it ....if so wheres a good place to buy it from ??....( THANK YOU FOR ANY INPUT!!)

The pump is probably still OK, you probably have burnt contacts on the air pump relay in the RCM causing it to stay on at times.
You can leave it disconnected without causing any damage, it is just to heat up the O2 sensors faster at initial start.

If you disable the air pump then eventually you will get a check engine light with a code for secondary air issues. I would repair the relay, and leave the pump operable. These pumps are most active in winter and sometimes don't even activate in warm summer weather.

if you do get a check engine code it won't pass smog inspection, (at least it won't in CA) you may need to clear it before you get your smog done and also make sure you schedule your smog appointment in the afternoon after you've driven it for a few miles. I replaced one on my BMW and it had blown the relay too, it also blew a fuse, not just any fuse, but one not listed in the manual. I found it, after a lot of searching on the internet, under the front passenger seat, under the carpet, and I believe it was a 60 amp fuse, an expensive one, like everything else on that car.

I found the air pump off of ebay, new for about half the price BMW was asking.

If the problem is the relay situated in the RCM why would you waste the money on a pump? You get advice and then ignore it.

The problem basically is the relay, I would fix that first and if the pump still works you are good to go, if not then get the pump.
Why waste money on something that may be fine.

RCM, not PCM. Don't send the wrong module to DJ ( tighed1 )
The RCM is the one closest to the engine with all the fuses on top.

For engine management Check Engine Lights you should be able to go to Kragens and get it scanned and reset for free. It may reset itself after a few drives.........

i pulled my RCM out sent it off to D.J. for repair and yes my points needed to be replaced so D.J. did a great job going out of his way to repair and get it back to me as the fire was only 7 miles from my front door so we where ready to go but as it turned out the fire went the other way and is now 40% contained anyway i received the RCM put it back in place and hooked battery back up and it worked very well and the engine light went out so today i drove about 80 mils or so and bang the engine light came back on so im thinking i DO NEED to replace my air pump???....
