Question Keyless entry question...

When I purchased my SLK32 I only received one key fob and it appeared to be broken. I replaced the battery in it, but it still doesn't work. I can operate the central locking system with the key in the door and trunk and also the dash toggle switch.

My question is this: How can I test to see if the keyless entry system works before buying a new key fob/remote. They're pretty pricey and I'd hate to buy one only to find out the onboard system/receiver/actuator etc was broken.

Thanks,
Robert

My srt came with to keys. One of them used to work, then I changed the battery and now it works like you described. There is a post on here about how to program a fob. I'm hoping that works for me...might want to check it out.

For MB's - You can have a go yourself - but I couldnt remove the glued in little plastic RFID chip in the old case - without fear of breaking it or destroying th eold case - something I didnt want to do at the time.
You need to do this if you do it yourself.
Otherwise dealer will do it....

Did you Resynchronize your key after replacing the battery?

(push unlock 2x then put key in ignition and turn to pos 2 within 30 seconds)

Thanks for the replies, but I am sure my fob is broken. resyncing is not possible.

My question is whether or not there is a way to check to see if the system in the car works, before buying a new fob. I don't want to buy a new fob/remote only to find that the system in the car is broken. Isn't the remote entry/alarm part of the central locking system that sits in the trunk? My unit had the typical water damage but has been DIY repaired.

yes - I understand your frustration - I was in the same limbo for 12months - using the manual key option.
but things could be worse.
if you can dissasemble your fob an try to extricate the RFID chip stuck inside....it may be easier than mine was.
If you're in luck you can use something a little less permanent to restick it in place.
Then ebay has cases+blade for cheap.
When you get that you only need to find a locksmith who can cut you a blade.
Once cut, its a simple change over.

PS - I didnt manage to remove my RFID - still working with a dodgy case.
PS - be careful with the spring clip and small bits when dissasembling.

I have the same problem. I'll try taking the key apart tomorrow. Any other advice?

I thought I'd give an update. I was forced to buy a new key/fob/remote from the dealer ($195). They wanted another $90 to program it for the door locks, etc. Since I wasn't sure my CLS would work with the remote, I declined. I got the new key and followed the instructions on this forum for programming the remote entry. Worked perfectly. Hazzah!!

My guess is that if the CLS works with the key, it probably is functional with a functioning remote. I know my old remote was broken because the LED did not light up when pressing any button.

If you get a cheapo case from eBay you throw away the new key on it and use the old key from your old fob.

My chip just sat in a little pocket and used no glue.

That's the way mine was. Problem is, I lost the wholedamn thing! Ditto on the RFID chip being "loose" in there. The rest of the "guts" are interchangeable
