2,000 mile Appalachian roadtrip - route advice anyone?
2,000 mile Appalachian roadtrip - route advice anyone?
Fellow Crossfire enthusiasts,
Below is a portion of the route I will be taking from OK to my new base in SC. As you can see, I'm taking a bit of a detour to go experience the majesty of the Appalachians that I've read so much about on this forum.
In addition to my fully loaded cargo bay, I'll be packing a spare RCM, CPS + tools, tire pressure gauge, extra quart of oil, coolant, tire patching kit, smart phone and plenty of road snacks
This is my first time driving the Appalachians, and I welcome any advice! I'd like to hit up the Blue Ridge Parkway and as many scenic views as possible, while limiting my time on mind-numbing interstates. Locals, any word on the weather through the mountains this time of year?

It should be a great trip.

You have GOT to take US 321 south off I40 to Marysville, then US 129 south.
This is the famous "Tail of the Dragon"
take state 28 over to state 19, then to Cherokee ( casino there ), then US 441 up to Gatlinburg, then Sevierville, then 66 back to I40.
I think you will find that off the interstate loop well worth your while .....

Where were you over the 4th of July this last year Bjames? My wife and I took a trip up there, spent a night downtown, even drove the Crossfire! Would have been cool to meet up with another Crossfire owner.
Now that the wife and I know more people from the area (Jimmier near Friday Harbor) we may have to make a similar trip this coming year.
Sorry to veer the thread off course. Only thing I can advise is to check the weather reports frequently. It was only 45 here on my way home, but getting onto the freeway was a slippery experience to say the least. Cold weather = cold tires = less grip.
Have fun, take lots of pictures and enjoy the ride!

Thanks for all the great advice! I'll try to drive some of those routes, time (and daylight) permitting. I have a set of summer Hankook tires, so I'll be managing the momentum carefully in the corners. I do plan on passing through Nashville, right around lunchtime. Tail of the Dragon!..that'd be a sucky road to break down on by myself, but all those corners would be a fun workout, if the weather stays clear.

Yes, your only problem this time of year is the altitude and weather....if she stays warm, you need to check out some of the scenery, and the other thing to consider is....you can always come back and join us when we are all down there...SC isn't that far a drive to the Dragon....

Haha, you gotta find a girl who can fit in a tiny Crossfire..Hooter's isn't a bad spot to start. Alaxfire and JHM2K, I'll be passing through Nashville around noon on Friday. PM me if you're down for lunch. 300 curves in 11 miles? Seems like a slow minivan/Prius would cause a major traffic jam. Hope I don't lean out on this trip from all that cold mountain air. Maybe a wideband wouldn't be a waste of money after all. Anyone driven the Blue Ridge Parkway?

On the bright side, Steve (32Krazy) works nights so he'd be able to grab a bite.
Be safe coming through!

Oh, and:
I gave up on Hooters girls - When you are my age, they expect a tip for EVERYTHING.
I met my current lady (a Ukrainian-Russian) in Yoga class.
