See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
doesnt matter what motor is in it really...the body is the defining factor and always has been. looking back at classic street rods how many Chevy v8's were in Fords but they were still a Ford and called such. Same with AC Cobra's that were built in the last 20 years with different power plants. Still a Cobra even if not from the original run.
the Crossfire is a Chrysler, be content with that
if you want a Ferrari buy that and not a Maserati with a Ferrari drivetrain (still called a Maserati too)
if you wanted an AMG...then buy an AMG

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Yeah... I'd basically agree with this. In my mind, the Crossfire is first and foremost a Chrysler product. What makes it interesting is the fact it marks one of the few times Chrysler used superior quality parts by outsourcing to Mercedes for a good portion of it.
But really, there are certain years/models of other Chryslers on the road with the Crossfire's identical front grille and hood. I occasionally see them and think they're Crossfires in my rear view mirror for a split second.

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
So was the engine in my srt6 hand built by an amg tech or was it just put together on the line ? I was always under the impression the parts that went into the hand built amg engine were the same ones used in the xfire and that the engine itself was held to a higher standard than the stock 3.2's .

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Steve,
Would it be more correct to say that a Mercedez Benz SLK320 was modified by the inhouse tuner
known as AMG? And, to go a little further with the idea of, just because it's got the engine, the
suspension and a whole lot of other parts from the SLK32 the SRt-6 it is not an AMG, I would think that
as soon as you add the first modification it, the SLK32 is no longer an AMG.
Personally, I could give a rat's patootie less whether folks think their car is a "whatever". I'm just
trying to get to the gist of the argument so I understand. From all that has gone on before on this
thread, having AMG parts all over the place does not make an SRT-6 an AMG, makes no diff and the
6 is a Chrysler (though, at that time, I'd think a Daimler/Chrysler would fit better). I'm good with
that, but would argue that one, there is no such thing as an "AMG", three are only Mercedes
Benz that have been tuned by AMG. It would be like calling my SRT-6 an Eurocharged, as that is
who tuned it. And, two, once you add other parts to a car, including your much loved SLK32, it is no
longer a "Mercedes", but something based off a Mercedes.
No biggie, it still runs like a bat out of hades and that's all I really care about.
Happy driving!
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
I guess its the same argument people have been having for generations now when multiple manufacturers are involved in producing a car.The A.C. Cobra had the valve covers that read Cobra powered by Ford and I believe the Sunbeam Tiger also had Tiger powered by Ford valve covers.Seeing as the SRT6 came with a Chrysler badge and not an AMG technically its not an AMG.That being said when people ask me what my car has for a motor I tell them its got a supercharged AMG 6 cylinder. Am I lying? I say no.Is that a sufficient answer? I say yes seeing as no one has argued with me about it yet and seemed to be wowed by its performance. These cars really are sleepers.Very few people, mechanics included are aware of what these cars can do.
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
I guess what I'm getting at, is this... people will argue about this time after time, but not many
truely call their car what it is. There are AMG tuned Mercedes Benz and there are SRT tuned
Chryslers. To call your car an AMG or an SRT is a misnomer. They are a Mercendes and a
Chrysler. And saying much more than that is just adding color.
Just my two cents. Well, now it's up to four cents, since you got me to pony up again

while the crossfire was a joint venture by daimler/ chrysler and it has many parts from the amg line it in truth is a chrysler vin and therefore can never be a amg car.
personally i dont think that detracts from the crossfire at all, but im not 1 to call a car what it isnt. most everyone here choose the car for its looks and driveline. again i say be proud of it and if mopar folks dont like it screw em. if the benz crowd doesnt like screw them too. but own up to what it is dont make it into something it isnt.
when you speak of "tuning" understand theres more to it then the "ecu tune" the suspension , driveline and electronics were develpoed by amg as were the body designs. it was held to be an exclusive run of cars from virtually all the classes of mercedes. until the merger this was a non issue as no other car ever built carried the amg moniker xcept mercedes.

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Boy, everyone must have a lot of time on their hands to argue about this. Remember when you could buy a Rolls, Cadillac or many other chassis and then hire a body shop to put a custom body on it? That is the way I look at my SRT. I think our cars are as close to that as modern cars get. Those are the cars that are special and much more rare than the run-in-the-mill production car. M/B or Chrysler. It is the best of both worlds in my humble opinion. But, I'm not going to argue about it. I love my car and I think it is special and it is what it is. Maybe someday in the future, Fiat/ Chrysler (since they own the name)will come with a new Crossfire made by Ferrari and we can start a new argument. I look forward to that day.
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
I agree, the SRT6 is much more than a run-of-the mill production car. The AMG descriptor is only useful in making a destinction between the N/A Crossfire and the SRT-6. Otherwise the name AMG would never enter my conversations. AMG doesn't build cars, they modify Mercedes as does the Chrysler SRT division. The SRT6 has the best of both worlds.
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
MBs are modified my AMG... they are MB's... Chrysler XF SRT6's are modified by an AMG drive trane, but are still Chrysler. So there isn't a thing wrong with putting AMG on a modified car... if it has AMG parts in it... but, it isn't an AMG car, but neither is the MB... if we are going there...VIN's or no VIN's... They have their exclusive club...maybe I should set up one for us....yes CICCI is for XF's only....lol....... Get that MB **** out of there.... Funny thing is, it was all made in Germany... It is as German as German gets... But we have a Chrysler car...like it or not...but hang whatever sign you want on it... it's your car...
BTW, FP, looks like either the long arm of the law ready to reach out and grab you, which is how I think, lol.... or the Good Lord lending you a hand at driving, cause only he knows you can use it....lol

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Sure I dont even want 20's on a small car as I am neither ghetto or 16. Got hydraulics and ground lighting with that too? Great majority of cars with 20's look like **** and ride even worse. Just sayin. Oh and the XF were built by KARMANN, famous for the...Volkswagon Golf & Ghia & AMC Javelin.
/. end sarcasm
hmm...AMG supplies the Pagani Zonda engine - AMG valve covers even. Doesnt say AMG anywhere else on the car or title.

The AMG's have AMG on the title, XF has SRT on the title I assume?
As I said before doesnt matter what is put into it, what does matter is how it is titled, ya know, that legal piece of paper. Lawyers are picky about that stuff.
Both AMG and SRT have their own "club website" for whoever cares, I dont.
Be happy with what you have just dont make like it is something else and expect others to agree peacefully. Absolutely nothing wrong with the XF before I get flamed, nothing wrong with SRT (well maybe their new truck?), nothing wrong with AMG (well, high prices). But they are not quite the same. Cousins absolutely with a lot of shared DNA, but I dont kiss my cousin either no matter how pretty she is.

Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Don't forget that Fiat also owns Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. So I don't think that the Fiat name plate is such an insult or joke as you might think. They have the resources to make some very interesting and sporty cars. Styling, the Italians are also generally quite good if they want to be. I know that they also make some really plain ugly cars, but I think Fiat will lead w/the best they have to help re-establish their cars here. Also, I always liked many of the Alfa spiders. Fun, stylish, inexpensive sports cars. I am looking forward to what they will bring to the U.S.
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Bottom line: If you want a SRT6, get one. You can sell your SLK 32 AMG for a couple of thousand more than a SRT6 in equal condition, get the same performanc and quality in a better looking car. Plus, the SRT6 has a better chance of increasing in value one day. There is a plethora of AMG sport coups out there and they all look a lot alike. Its like buying a Corvette and realizing everyone has one.
Re: See what a friend of mine saw on the road
Looking at an SL55amg but will not get the srt6. To me the SLK is a better looker, better looking interior, girls love it and ask for rides all the time and the convertible/hard top roadster mode is fantastic. Plus from what I see on this and the mb forums the Crossfire has more interior quality problems that the mb's dont have save the crappy seat heaters. Granted my car is not stock visually either including partially debadged but the AMG logo was left on it. My office with ~60 people, 2 M3's, 4 Porsche's, a 500 hp 350z, a C6 & a '59 vette. But my car gets more of the attention without being overly loudly styled. I like being subtle but carry a big stick!
Dont get me wrong, I DO like the Crossfire! I looked at a couple before I bought my 32 even. But I liked the 32 and with its rarity that is a plus. When I first pulled into Speeddriven's shop I hear Marcin saying "havent seen one of those in a while", I like that.
