FNG with some questions
FNG with some questions
Hey everyone,
I've been considering getting a Crossfire SRT6. That being said, I had some questions if you wouldn't mind answering.
1) Does the SRT6 come with factory HIDs? If not, projectors?
2) Are there any critical maintanance items I need to worry about when buying a SRT6? For example, I own a 300M and the timing belt is crucial to have done every 7-years and/or 100k or you risk engine failure if it snaps.
3) Was there ever a hardtop SRT6, or just soft top?
4) How reliable have the cars proven to be over the long-haul?
5) Were the SRT6s automatic only? I noticed the base and/or Limited had a manual.
6) How's the aftermarket for the SRT6?
7) Do a lot of SLK parts fit?
8) Are there a lot of additional performance gains to be made on the car?
9) Is there anything else I should know/look for when shopping for a SRT?
Thanks for your help!

Re: FNG with some questions
I'm sorry, but it would be better for you to use the "Search" function and read up a bit. If you do that, we'll be more able to answer specific questions-not broad, general ones.
It looks like your post contains just about all of the terms you need for searching. We'll help a ton, but you have to start!

2. Don't slam the hatch
3. SRT 6 is also a coupe
4. I've had mine for six years....only been in when I modded it/oil changes
5. Yes, auto only
6. Skimpy and relatively expensive
7. No body parts....engine/drivetrain are identical for the most part
8. Sure is...you can drop a V8 in it if you got the money
9. Look for one with low mileage

Re: FNG with some questions
Thanks for the answers.
To clarify, I knew it came in coupe/soft top, I meant was there a hardtop convertible variant - my apologies for not being more specific.
And I said considering - I'm not going out and buying this today. Part of my research for a lot of things has to been to come to the communities and ask people with a lot of knowledge what their long-term experiences have been, plus if there's any oddities I should know about.
My apologies if I aggravated anyone, though. I was looking for some more basic answers before I really started digging into these pages and getting the nitty gritty.

Read thru the threads, as there are some problems, but not huge problems...if you are mechanically inclined, you can do the repairs yourself.
No apology needed, we just get a lot of questions right up front from newbies, when there are thousands of discussions about those very problems on here...so it is just easier to refer you to them rather than start another discussion....
Anyway...good luck with your search... Needswings.com Eurocharged.com are our main aftermarket suppliers, and there are a few others, but for the SRT, these are the main ones...
Re: FNG with some questions
I can't remember ANYONE (even those who track their cars) who posted that they were left standing by the road with their car (except for the occasional CPS failure, but that gets all of us, and Im not worried, I carry a spare CPS!)
I just posted in the "chat box" that the best thing a noob can do, is sit in an easy chair on a rainy afternoon (when "she" is out shopping) and read a lot of threads! ANYONE can praise or knock the car, but it's all attitude, some people whine when a tire goes low, some laugh it off when a rod goes flying - best to make up your OWN mind.
The SRT is a hell of a weekend toy, and many here drive them to work every day. It seems to be a HELL of a platform for modding and customizing, and people like Ron at NeedsWings have a long list of stuff you "must have".
But seriously, if you are a car guy, a REAL car guy (not a poser like me) - then you have tons of reading to do. Not to say you won't have questions, but if you read enough - you'll even know WHO here to talk to.
The journey to learn about this car will be a big part of the fun (not as big as trying to keep up with certain characters on the Dragon, but stilll...)
Re: FNG with some questions
That makes sense, and it's what I intend to do. I figured I'd ask the basic questions and go from there into the pages of threads.
I'm sure answering the same questions gets old, though. I tend to prefer hearing things from people's mouths directly, because the search function can be somewhat deceiving in giving you a real idea of what the problem areas, options are, etc. on a car. Radiator failures on the LH platform is a fairly rare happening, but with the age of the cars it's becoming more commonplace; if someone were to search it on those forums, though, it'd seem like something which happened every week.
I also take things posted on the internet with a grain of salt; many are biased and others have it flat-out wrong. That's why I tend to come to the communities themselves - the people here know these cars better than anyone.
I will definitely start the reading through pages here to get a better idea.
Thanks again for all your feedback.
On another note, I'd be getting rid of the 300M for a SRT. I get a company car in a few months (before winter hits), and as much as I love it I just don't have a need for another sedan. I was considering storing it but even that's hard to justify.
I'm not sure I'd consider myself a "hardcore" car guy, but I definitely am passionate about the cars I do love. I've done a lot of interior mods on the Special so far.
And instead of talking about her:
This is what the stock Special interior looks like:
Then you add my modifications:
• 300M 1999: black sun visor inserts
• LH 99-11: Infinity window grilles
• 300M 2001: chrome shifter
• LH 2001: chrome switches
• LH 2001: dark slate door locks with the red triangle
• 300M 01-04: California wood dash pieces and steering wheel
• LH 01-04: dark slate shifter bezel, cup holders, console lid, and rear vents.
• LH 01-04: dark slate door trim (dash, front/rear foot pieces, B-pillar, and bottom C-pillar)
• 300M 2002: Pro-am seats - added light taupe rear cup holder and seat belts.
• Painted oh (CENSORED) handles
To get this:
---
So I've had a bit of experience with modding and being a car guy, but I'm definitely glad to be here to get some additional info to help on the SRT purchase decision.

Re: FNG with some questions
A stock SRT6 is still a wonderful car with plenty of power.
When modified, the maintenance and repair time can go way up... like any other car.
Check the VIN of your potential SRT6 to the list here on the forum. Then research the forum member to find out if it's been a race machine... if that's important to you..

I'm sorry if I seemed the jerk, but I tried to be as diplomatic as I could!

Re: FNG with some questions
Like any other car, if it has been properly maintained and not abused, it will generally be reliable. These things regularly go over 100k and there was an SRT6 in Detroit that had 180k on it. General concensus is that these engines will go over 250k. I've had my roadster since 2005 and the SRT6 since 2008, and other than oil changes they have required no repairs (other than the intercooler under warranty). Keeping them garaged through the winter is wise and no hardship, other than not being able to drive them for 5 months.
