Intercooler Reservoir + Custom Cap
Intercooler Reservoir + Custom Cap
Following in the footsteps of many, I decided to not only isolate the Intercooler and Radiator Coolant, but to add a reservoir as well. Looking through what others had done, I didn't blaze a new path, but rather took a little bit from many and made it my own.
I couldn’t find EXACTLY what I wanted so I started with this reservoir and mounting bracket from Jegs…
JEGS Round Recirculating Overflow Catch Can with Fill Neck
JEGS Catch Can Mounting Bracket
Not liking the small ¼” Nipple, I drilled and tapped it up to a ½” NPT and used this ¾” Hose inlet from Summit…
SummitRacing Tuff Stuff Hose Nipple 4450B
Mounted it to the radiator fan housing (using massively large fender washers on the back to ensure no risk of the plastic giving or deforming).
Capped the connection from the intercooler system going into the factory coolant box, piped it to my new reservoir.
Added a custom radiator cap
And here you go….
The Custom Cap mounts to a standard radiator cap. I ordered it through a company I deal a LOT with for my other vehicles (Magnum and 300C).
Billet Technology | Modern Mopar Billet Accesories
Most of what they have won't work on the Crossfire but since this used a standard radiator cap, it worked just fine.

Re: Intercooler Reservoir + Custom Cap
Thanks for the write up with pics and links. The cap is a sweet touch.
Do you have any pics of how you tied into the IC coolant line? Did you just reroute the 3/4" coolant "T" into the bottom of the new jegs resivoir? Did you tie the jegs resivoir overflow vent back into the factory coolant box line that was already there?

Re: Intercooler Reservoir + Custom Cap
Yes, I picked up some 3/4" heater hose from Auto Zone and ran it straight to the bottom from the T. Capped the outlet on the bottom of the Factory tank.
I actually just plugged the overflow vent from the jegs unit...
It could easily be ran in to the factory overflow box from there but I didnt because the pressure , nor heat of this system should ever be enough to actually cause the radiator cap to pass / vent any fluids...
Really, the cap is nothing but a way for me to check and add fluid as needed more than it really is going to be for any type of venting.

What did you use to cap the bottom of the factory tank?
So that makes four caps all together, one 3/4" for the bottom of the factory tank, and two smaller caps (one for each end of the factory vent), and the last one on the vent of the new jegs unit.
What was your cost in all (without personal discounts)?

Thanks for the info, last couple of questions.

So for the caps, stop by Auto zone (or any one that carries the Dorman "Help" series) and you can pick these up: Help Cooling bypass cap assortment - AutoZone_
It will have the correct size to cap off all 3 locations on the car (Factory Coolant Reservoir, & the two factory vents).
On the Jegs unit I simply used a screw in 1/4" bung from the hardware section. Here is one version. Dorman 1/4 in. NPT square head pipe plug- AutoZone_
I actually found one at another local auto parts store (Oreilly) that had a recessed square drive that allowed it to screw in and sit flush but either one gets the job done.
Now if you look close you may notice that instead of capping one of the factory vents (The T coming across the top of the radiator) I replaced it with a straight through fitting. Sorry, I can't give you more info on that one, I had it in my tool box already from long ago, but they can be found easily on SummitRacing or again, just cap it from the cap set from Auto Zone above.
Oh and hey, one more add if you do this, we loosened the factory 3/4" T and spun it around which made it very simple to loop the 3/4" hose down away from the Alternator and back up to the bottom of the reservoir.
Total cost would be around $130 if you didn't want to add the bling of the custom cap.
That reservoir and bracket were right at $100, add a simple $10 radiator cap, $5.00 worth of Bypass caps, 1/4 Plug and squeeze clamps, The $5.00 3/4" Nipple from Summit racing & $10 - $15 worth of 3/4 Heater hose...
The Billet bling adds another $50 - $75 depending on how custom you want it.
All together mine actually ran a bit higher as I bought a few nipples and adapters trying to adapt up to the 3/4" hose, finally deciding on the 3/4" nipple and then having to buy a drill bit and a set of NPT Taps to make it work... You may can find a better reservoir, maybe one with a larger factory inlet. Not sure, already had that one in hand so I made it work, and am actually VERY happy I did as the fit and look are perfect!
