I had OEM AS Contis on the '04 and have Michelin Pilots Sports AS on the 6. The rear Contis lasted to 27k miles and the Michelin's 20k. I probably had been easier on the Contis than the previous owners on the Pilots.
Both sets of rears are or were about the same wear, down to the wear bars inside and maybe 1/16" over the bars on the outside. I'm not looking for much more than 20k on them as that's four/five years for me.

Tom I have the super sports on the coupe and they are great. Cost less than the PS 2"s but with the same feel. I muck prefer them over the Hankooks I had on the car. You will remember I am on 19" 20" after market rims. I thing you would enjoy the super sports.

Continental DW is the factory shoe for several AMG cars. The Conti 5P is supposed to be even better, but there is a very limited range in sizes.
As much as I hate to, I'm running BF-Goodrich at the moment, for no other reason than I want a matched set. You may recall that I needed tires before the Dragon last year, and the Conti's were a week out. I had three days, and the BFG's were in stock.
I have no gripes on the traction -- they simply stick. Sidewall rigidity is amazing, and the cornering feel is EXTREMELY confident. But, they're 3-4 pounds heavier per corner than the competitor's tires, and noisy.
When it's time to remove these, I will be choosing from either the Continental DW or the Nitto Invo. They're within 50 points of each other on the treadwear rating, and both are relatively lightweight.

I've seen numerous guys that are struggling with the acceleration out of a corner with the V12's.

Re: Continental ExtremeContact DW or Pilot Super Sports?
To try to give some input to two questions...
1. I have no experience with the Pilot Super Sport, but I have just recently put
the Continental ExtremeContact DW series tires on my car. Size on the front
is stock, and on the rear they are 285x30. Ride is great, low noise and tons
of grip.
2. I just swapped out a set of the Hankook Ventus V12's for the DW's. The Ventus
was a good tire, and cheaper, but it didn't have the grip I was looking for. But,
on the plus side, these lasted twice the time that my other tires (Conti Contact
AWS, Goodyear F1-GSD3, Hankook Ventus V12) have and were by far the most
inexpensive. Also, it appears that at the same 285x30, the Ventus was a little
bit wider.
Just my $0.02

Re: Continental ExtremeContact DW or Pilot Super Sports?
I ordered the Michelin Pilot Super Sports in 275/30-19 this morning. $313 each, plus shipping was $655. Who knows what mount and balance will be. I hope I don't have to replace my TP sensors.
And just to whine a little, I also had to replace the battery - that was $189. Ouch. I was expecting $100-$125.

Re: Continental ExtremeContact DW or Pilot Super Sports?
LOL, yeah. I should know better. Everything to do with this car costs more. It's a lot like my old Dodge Stealth - take what you think it should cost and multiply by 2 (sometimes more). I never thought I would pay over $300 for a tire either. In fact, I never thought I'd pay over $200 for a tire.
While I was waiting at Sears for the guy to test my old battery, I walked around the shop looking at tires they had on display. One tire was on-sale for $50 and even had a warranty. That made me laugh.

The V12's look good on paper and when people initially get them they rave but personally I will not purchase another set. The good is they are cheap. The bad is they are cheap.
Re: Continental ExtremeContact DW or Pilot Super Sports?
I'm not going to answer the OP question, only share what I know. The Yokohama Advan AD08 is good in the wet, quiet and sticks like you can't believe in the corners. 180 treadware. What's not good is if it gets real hot lots of the grip goes away. When it's 3/4 worn it's garbage. Hankook Ventus RS-3 I adore. Great new, great hot, great cold, great worn out. But unfortunately a bit loud on the street and 140 treadware. I know nothing about the Conti's or Super Sports personally. If you want a warm weather performance street tire and don't mind some road noise, you can't beat the RS-3. It's amazing. BTW, I didn't like the Michelin Pilot Sport Cups.

I have no experience with the RS-3's, and only autocross at much lower speeds than what Les sees, but the Potenza R-11's I'm on now are pretty bad a$$. I have to work real hard to reach traction limits. Holding up well so far, not enough miles on them yet for comparison. Extreme Summer Tire Survey: Consumer Survey Results By Category
