Unhappy Axle seal

This may be a repeat of an older thread but i didnt find it. I recently bought an SRT, just had the oil changed this weekend and they told me i had an axle seal that was leaking. Priced the seal, its only about 8 bucks, but they said it would be around 500 in labor to change it. Is this something anyone else has dealt with? Never had any issues with my 04, but never know what the prior owner has done to the SRT. Would love any thoughts from everyone.

I've never done one but sounds like a lot of money to remove the half shaft and replace the seal in the case. It's not that big of a job if it's the seal I think it is.

I saw this thread; might help? The first thing I would do is verify the leak and check fluid level for myself. Another thread w/ great info on diff./axle removal is the wavetrack group buy thread. Good luck.

They had said the drivers side axle seal. I have done CV's on toyotas and such before but not on one of these. It seemed a bit high in price to me, but didnt know if it took any special tools or anything and didnt want to screw it up if ya'll know what i mean

At about the 47,000 mile mark Chrysler replaced the rear axle seals on my NA 07 under the LPW. Dealership said it would have been over $400 without the warranty. I would occaisionally see a spot of lubricant on the garage floor about the size of a quarter.

Talking Re: Axle seal

You can do the removal of the axle, its work and lots of wrenches 18mm etc. $500 is in the ball park though for service of unit, get it in writing. Woody

Smile Re: Axle seal

I'm jumping in here on some old posts. I have a leak from the center rear where the rear axles meet. I also have 48,000 miles on an 07 Coupe. Have not had the seal diagnosed but I'm told there are 3 possible seals that could be leaking. I have had the CF for 1.5 years and this will be the 2rd repair (skreem modual, valve cover gaskets and now rear seal). Is this typical due to age of vehicle or is this Mercedes SLK320 prone to repairs such as these? I have a 5 year Mopar warranty that I have used 2x. The seals are covered under warranty but after the 5 years (warranty) is up, who knows, I may sell the CF and find something else as a play car. Anyone else have frequency of repairs like this? I love the CF, the uniqueness but the repairs are no fun. Thanks for any input.
