I'm Rich, more wideband trials
I'm Rich, more wideband trials
Made a few more runs with the flip camera videoing the wideband and ultragauge. Pulling good now but as you will see I'm running rich. The runs were a little difficult since it was misting rain. What would my ideal WOT AFR be? The delay with the Ultragauge is annoying. Anybody want to trade a 185 for a 181? That might take care of being rich
Looking very rich.

Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
I had the same problem as with your car cutting of at 5000rpm.
Had the same problem with my Needswings single CAI.
It was close to the coil cuasing my knock sensor to shut down.
Now it runs OK but the weater here is very cold near freezing point and very slippery.
My car break loose in 4th gear during the test run.
Do have the same mods as you and next step would be a AFR

Rich? Yes, but I don't think it's that bad. Your seeing 9's right before the shift which is not that unusual. Nearing the shift point, especially in the first 3 gears, the throttle body is partially closed which makes the AFR's richen drastically. My car also cuts timing before and after the shifts, I'm talking 18º to 6º more or less. Also when my car gets real hot the AFR's drop a full point at WOT. Mine are around 12 with a cold engine and mid 10's when the temperatures get real hot. Most of the time I see mid 11's while racing.

Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
Another thing I did see in the videos is the rapid increase in IAT's. They drop very rapid as well. Although cruising around they are 20-30 above ambient now. I think I saw 190 or above at the end of a hard pull. I can see the reasoning for a bigger intercooler. How much can I improve the IAT spike? I would probably design the intercooler with fans for cooling between drag strip runs to run with a manual switch on the intercooler pump. This would reduce heat soak between runs. If a 1% drop in power correlates with a 10 degree increase in IAT. If ambient is running say 70 degrees and I could keep the IAT from spiking above 100. I would have a 90 degree difference or 9% of say 400 (flywheel) or 36 hp increase. This of course would only be for a brief moment as the IAT spike and fall rapidly.
Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
That's why your AFR's are in the low 10's. I have a supercooler and it takes a while for the water to reach 20º over ambient but thats where it ends up. After a run it comes down fast. I just added the stock H/E in front of the supercooler to see if the added capacity would help; and it will lower the temperatures 2 or 3º more than just the supercooler. It seems the water to air systems aren't efficient enough to do better. The only way is with fans like Jim put on his car or for the 1/4 mile, a trunk mounted 5 gallon tank. The fans won't fit unless you do some custom work. BTW, I've never seen 190º even with my coolant temperature at 245º.

The IAT's are hard to read when they move so quick up and down after a hard run. Didn't realize they peak like they do until I view the video a couple of times. On regular brief sprints you hardly notice it as it happens so quick. Do you datalog or do you watch a gauge?
Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
I data log with a combination Zietronix and Dashdaq. While racing I watch the AFR's and ECT's. All the rest I download and watch the next day. I log ECT's, IAT's, throttle position, boost, speed, timing and rpms. It's a bit expensive but a wonderful logger.

Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
The wideband is only for the AFR's. However the Zietronix can be connected to a bunch of sensors. The Dasdaq receives information from the Zietronix as well as all the information from the OBDII port.
I never data logged when I had the stock H/E but I think something is wrong if your seeing 190º when the temperature is 70º outside. For reference, I live in Puerto Rico and it's always 90º which means my IAT's normally are 110º on the street. On the road course at around the 15 minute mark I'll get up to 180º IAT's at the end of the straight and cool under braking to 135 or 140º. And that's with engine water temperatures from 230 to 245º. No way you should be seeing 190º IAT's IMO. At the dragstrip my IAT's reach 150º or so at the end of the 1/4 mile and be at 120º by the time I drive back around. I hope other chime in with their information.

Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
as an example my iats in the staging lanes will be between 88* and 110*. do the burnout stage and take off. iat's reach 120* by 1/8 mile and basically stay there till i cross the traps. by the time im turning off the track im back to 90*. as long as the car is running the pump runs. shut the car off and the iats climb quickly until cooldown is achieved, usually takes 45 minutes without ice
Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
dj's dual pass supercooler with the system separeted and the cm30 pump using a 70% water 30% coolant mix. -10 fan mod. its possible my iat's climb a bit more but im watching the track. once i knew iat wouldnt be an issue i dont pay much attention to and usually erase the logs after reviewing. unless jerry needs them for a specific reason correlating to my tune. i concentrate more on afr , boost , timing, rpm and such
Re: I'm Rich, more wideband trials
Man, you guys have great info.
I reviewed the videos again. My top IAT was 163 at around 120mph. This was after repeated runs. It ramps fast and falls fast. I might have been mistaken about the 190. I did see that when my IC pump was bad. I think I will build me my own supercooler over the next few weeks. I did talk to the guys at snow perfomance about water methanol kits. Had called about a class 8 truck application and the conversation came around to the SRT. Would be nice but a little pricey. I'm doing a demo unit on a Detroit Series 60 big rig to see if we can eek out some mileage with these ridiculous diesel prices.
