Cool hiccup | hesitation | slip

Hey all, I’ve been a long time reader of the boards, definitely appreciative of your knowledge & knowhow. I really have completed lots of due diligence, but I still have a question for the online pros.

The Problem: My srt (60k miles, no mods) has a hesitation/hiccup issue. Upon slow acceleration (like stop and go city traffic) the car seems to slip or hesitate typically around 1800 rpm, and typically the rpms drop by 150. Using that infamous search button I’ve read thru literally hundreds of threads, they all seem to point to the supercharger’s clutch slipping at the rpm in which it engages. The difference, however, is I can leave the car in first gear, run the rpms up very very slowly up to 3k, press the gas a bit harder and the hesitation occurs; going up a steep hill from a stop, hesitation can occur at 1k (typically with a metallic tink!). I thought the blower engages around 1800 ….

The Funny Stuff: I have an extended warranty; so took it into the dealership, after days in the shop, they replaced the supercharger - still the same issue & symptoms. Fast forward two months, another state and another dealership, they said there was not an issue with my car, the hesitation was normal and that I should accelerate quicker if I didn’t want to feel the hesitation (yes, really). A lengthy discussion with the service manager yielded no result other than: they have exhausted our knowledge base and are unable to fix the car citing they cannot find the real problem. The service manager called me a couple nights ago asking me to research the problem with the car and perhaps they can fix it if I point them in the right direction.

Other Tidbits: IC pump replaced (as it failed), no check engine lights, belt tensioner replaced; still fast as hell if I press the pedal hard

Potential Leads & stuff above my head: researching this problem, I found a many leads describing a very similar condition; I’m really hoping someone could point me (and a leading Atlanta Chrysler Dealership) in the right direction.

Boost Leak – looked for bolts backing out, didn’t really see anything, but I’m not a tech
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...oost-leak.html

Transmission Torque Limiter – perhaps the leading culprit?
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...em-advice.html

Spark Cut Initiated by the ECU – I no idea what it means
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...-advice-2.html

Metal rivets attaching supercharger’s magnetic actuator becoming oval causing play – looked, no ovals
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...-normal-3.html

MAF – not sure
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...e-driving.html

Throttle Position Sensor
https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...old-start.html

Supercharger & Clutch Assembly – Dealership replaced the supercharger unit, does the “unit” constitute the clutch assembly as well?

Is it the transmission?

I sincerely appreciate your time & advice! Thanks in advance.

I've had a similar issue for a while now (a long while).. your symptoms sound nearly identical to mine only I don't believe I hear a metallic (click) sound. I'm believing it's the torque converter but since mines out of warranty I'll have to wait for it to become more noticeable before I let someone take a look at it.

Oh.. I have the N/A.

I would've guessed a slight leak somewhere but if the supercharger was replaced by a dealer already they had to remove and reinstall, most likely, every part that could be leaking. Mine will hesitate, hiccup at around 1800 rpms when I have a leak. The car still runs great until whatever is leaking is almost falling off and then it throws a code pertaining to the idle speed.

UPDATE: Finally was able to replace the belt; to no avail, there is still the hesitation!

I'll unfortunately have to go back to the dealership; but at least I have some other leads, thanks to the forum.

Let me know if you'all can think of anything else. Thanks.

Before I sorted out most of my problems I had the bucking bronco symptom also.

You say that the hesitation is when your at 3000 and then open it up. If you accelorate dog slow can you go to 5000 with out issue (s) ??

I suspect that you have a manifold leak before the supercharger, like at the TB base. Start car and use a hose to probe around the TB assy listening to the sounds, do you detect a leak sound, also check at the wye pipe for leakage at the IAT sensor which is on top of the wye.

Report back with your findings please and well go from there............Woody

hey hey, now thats quick! It can occur as low as 1000 (going up hill) and over 3k on the high end (flat parking lot). Its almost like when there is X amount of torque, it happens.

I've gotten up there with the RPMS without the hesitation, however I think it simply becomes less discernible the higher it goes.

Tonight I'll have someone ride with me to detect hesitation at high RPMS.

I will also try and locate some hose tonight and snoop around the engine.

I appreciate your insight & will post the findings.

to follow-up on Woody's post.... the throttle body attaches to the supercharger via a 'gasket' that is two mounting plates with a rubber section molded to them. One plate mounts to the SC and one to the TB. That rubber gasket can split at one of the joints to the metal and cause a leak.... the amount of leak depends on how big the split is.... I have had this happen twice on my Aero.... or it just might need to be re-torqued...or...or....

Let us know if you have any more info... good luck...

What was your fix for it? Did you have to get new plates or just attach some liquid gasket to it?

Seems I may be having this problem as well.

First problem was letting a dealership work on it...but, I would go with a boost leak as well....If you were a little more mechanical, I would suggest a little starter fluid spray in and around intakes and base of throttle body...see if the engine picks up speed...

Yes, a big problem is letting the dealership work on it. I've confirmed with the warranty company that the car has to go a Chrysler dealership. Ironically, if the dealership wants to, they ( only they) can send it to an MB dealership.

Running the rpm's up, regardless of how light the throttle, hesitation occurs At it's highest at 3k, tried many times, just 3k. With the new belt, hesitation is much more evident.

Looked at the throttle body: from wye, gasket, throttle body, gasket, super charger ... Gasket connecting from wye looks a little loose. No hose, to my ear it did sound like air to me, higher pitched and constant. Gasket to supercharger is snug.

Snapped a photo showing condition ... Ipad no likey picture uploader interface, try tomorrow with another computer.

Thanks again for all your help.

I had to replace the gasket (as it is all one piece)... twice now.... I keep a spare in the garage... they are only about $8 at the Chrysler dealer here..... pics with PN in my gallery...

got some pictures

I hope these pictures are what you'all were talking about ...
first is some supercharger to gasket, looks fine in person, connection seems to be snug, no play:

below is picture of the whole assembly, the gasket from the wye looks and feels loose; one can wiggle the connection. Also appears to be a slight gap between gasket & wye (as shown in picture) but not sure if that is a real problem.

also got some pictures of the other end of the wye, both left & right, respectively.

looks worse in the photo, but there does seem to be a gap. Seems to emit sound. I don't have starter fluid spray. I guess I can try a plastic bag, see if it starts to suck itself in... giggity.

thanks!

Stress and shaking on the TB causes the rubber spacer to split. I used crazy glue on the part after I washed it in acetone and it worked for me. I have been playing with all the intake changes and did not want to buy a stupid spacer if I could avoid it all.

Sounds like you have the solution in hand, Woody

I definitely hope this is the solution!

I want to confirm what component gets cleaned & glued. It's below:

I essence, that spacer is cleaned then glue any rips, splits or tears back together as not to required the purchase of another spacer?

looooooooong weeeekend!

thank you much

the best way to check that gasket is to take it off so you and pull on the two plates.....or at least take the TB off.... 4 screws... then you can clean it and glue gasket if you like.....you can also clean the TB while you have it off.

You can buy a new gasket from Chrysler dealer for ~$8 though....

Dear lord, my crap don't look any like that ...very cooooool.

I'm not gunna ask where your gasket is or why your blower looks like it hit light speed ... Regardless, thats a nice engine.

My project this weekend is the gasket!

... Will report back
