5w-40 oil
Re: 5w-40 oil
I'm gonna change the oil today and i know it should be approved for 229.3 and .5, but does it work with MB229.31 approved oil such as this one?

Re: 5w-40 oil
The Mobil 1 5w40 ESP has been formulated to perform well under extended oil change intervals (up to 15K) as others have stated earlier in this thread. All part of design engineering to reduce routine maintenance on these cars during ownership. Car manufacturers did the same by installing premium spark plugs (e.g. platinum) to get 100k plug changes. Another factor with this grade is that it meets the M-B spec for 229.31 & 229.51, which states that it is suitable for cars with diesel engines.
Are both acceptable in the XFire - Yes? My gut tells me that eventually, 0w40 will disappear from the market and we'll be left with Mobil 1 5w40 ESP to use. But for now, I'm sticking with the Mobil 1 0w40 European Formula (North America designation) as long as I can get it.
Here's a link to a website that provides a good explanation of what multi-weight oil designations mean: http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/

Re: 5w-40 oil
Seen where the Chrysler dealers and some M/B dealers here in toasty Florida have switched over to 5W40 Pennzoil Syn as their choice for warranty oil changes.
My goto oil for both my Crossies. 10,000 mile change interval. Very highly rated (almost exclusively) amoungst the Audi boys.

Re: 5w-40 oil
I had mine serviced at the dealer in December and was charged for 9 quarts of 5127394-PB Pennzoil Ultra 5W40 1081090 @ U$9.20/qt.
ps enjoy discussing and finding specs on oil but for mine I use what is recommended.
pps the difference between 5W-40 and 0W-40 is purely what happens when very cold. Central Florida isn't. My preference is for as narrow a range as possible.
ppps MFR recommendations change often.

Re: 5w-40 oil
I buy it online from FCP Euro. 3 ea / 5 L jugs give me enough to do both Crossies. If doing 7,000 M changes, doing them @ 10,000 will save about a whole oil change by the second one. I've sent in samples and the additive pak is still top notch @ 10,000. Great stuff!

LEICHTLAUF = LONGLIFE
By the way, if you look on the Liqui Moly site you'll see 4 different 5W-40 mixes. The Leichtlauf is the only one sporting the 229.5 spec. The others are all 229.3!

Re: 5w-40 oil
I started using it when I first bought the Limited and liked the idea of not having to reset the oil change reminder. I just change it at every 10,000 mile interval (20,000, 30,000, 40,000, etc.) Easier to remember that way for me! If you like the reminder, you could probably just reset it @ 7000 and do the next change @ 14,000. Does save you alot and makes up for the cost of the oil!
I also highly recommend the use of their Pro-Line Engine Flush every other change which does clean the internals nicely.

Also, a lot of real positive reviews on BobIsTheOilGuy for their MoS2 Anti-friction additive.

Re: 5w-40 oil
I'm still using 0-40w Mobil 1. I've toyed with changing several times but decided it was foolish with no test data on the Mobil 1. So I sent a sample to Blackstone labs and it came back excellent. I change my oil twice a year no matter the mileage because of the abuse and heat I subject my engine to. No doubt other oils are adequate. I recommend having your used oil tested. That way your not depending on second hand/word of mouth/buy my stuff and make me rich advertising BS. It costs a few dollars and dirty hands but the satisfaction of knowing is worth it.

On another note, wouldn't mind trying this brand out... looks intriguing from the test! Problem is that it's seems to be available only in Australia. M/B 229.5 rated.
