I'm gonna change the oil today and i know it should be approved for 229.3 and .5, but does it work with MB229.31 approved oil such as this one?

Edit, i googled and got to this thread and saw now that this is the SRT6 forum, I have the N/A

I'm thinking that this whole oil thing has got out of hand, Mobil 0W-40 is recommended, Mobil 5W-40 is also recommended. I would say that any 0W-40 or 5W-40 oil is OK as long as it is on those two spec sheets.

Say that any oil on those spec sheets is OK is wrong.

I agree with the above. Basically, the multi-grade designation identifies the oil flow characteristics of the oil under winter (W) or "cold conditions". So Mobil 1 0w40 is designed to have a viscosity aligned with a 0 weight oil when it's cold. The result - the engine receives lubricant faster during start-up which reduces wear. And at normal operating temperatures (test temp = 100 C), it behaves like a 40 weight oil.

The Mobil 1 5w40 ESP has been formulated to perform well under extended oil change intervals (up to 15K) as others have stated earlier in this thread. All part of design engineering to reduce routine maintenance on these cars during ownership. Car manufacturers did the same by installing premium spark plugs (e.g. platinum) to get 100k plug changes. Another factor with this grade is that it meets the M-B spec for 229.31 & 229.51, which states that it is suitable for cars with diesel engines.

Are both acceptable in the XFire - Yes? My gut tells me that eventually, 0w40 will disappear from the market and we'll be left with Mobil 1 5w40 ESP to use. But for now, I'm sticking with the Mobil 1 0w40 European Formula (North America designation) as long as I can get it.

Here's a link to a website that provides a good explanation of what multi-weight oil designations mean: http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/

Seen where the Chrysler dealers and some M/B dealers here in toasty Florida have switched over to 5W40 Pennzoil Syn as their choice for warranty oil changes.

These guys are also a recommended oil for Aston Martin so thats always a good thing!
My goto oil for both my Crossies. 10,000 mile change interval. Very highly rated (almost exclusively) amoungst the Audi boys.

I haven't seen this kind is there a store where it is generally available? I will be using Mobil 1 as long as it is available but it is nice to know the alternatives.

I had mine serviced at the dealer in December and was charged for 9 quarts of 5127394-PB Pennzoil Ultra 5W40 1081090 @ U$9.20/qt.

ps enjoy discussing and finding specs on oil but for mine I use what is recommended.
pps the difference between 5W-40 and 0W-40 is purely what happens when very cold. Central Florida isn't. My preference is for as narrow a range as possible.
ppps MFR recommendations change often.

Hey Lar,
I buy it online from FCP Euro. 3 ea / 5 L jugs give me enough to do both Crossies. If doing 7,000 M changes, doing them @ 10,000 will save about a whole oil change by the second one. I've sent in samples and the additive pak is still top notch @ 10,000. Great stuff!

5W-40 Motor Oil (5 Liter) - Liqui Moly LM3864 | FCP Euro

LEICHTLAUF = LONGLIFE

By the way, if you look on the Liqui Moly site you'll see 4 different 5W-40 mixes. The Leichtlauf is the only one sporting the 229.5 spec. The others are all 229.3!

When you do the oil change at 10,000 miles do you add a time component in there also? Say 1 year or just miles. I only put 5 to 7 thousand on it annually.

Heck Larry, if you only do that in a year you may be able to extend it to 15,000 (2-3 yrs). My SRT6 does 10,000 miles per year and I could probably push her to 15,000 before next change. The wifey's Limited is daily driven to school and averages 20,000 / year so i change hers @10,000 since it does start to look dirty from the constant use. They state on their site that some fleet users have gotten 40,000 miles on single change before showing any degregation of additives.
I started using it when I first bought the Limited and liked the idea of not having to reset the oil change reminder. I just change it at every 10,000 mile interval (20,000, 30,000, 40,000, etc.) Easier to remember that way for me! If you like the reminder, you could probably just reset it @ 7000 and do the next change @ 14,000. Does save you alot and makes up for the cost of the oil!

I also highly recommend the use of their Pro-Line Engine Flush every other change which does clean the internals nicely.

Also, a lot of real positive reviews on BobIsTheOilGuy for their MoS2 Anti-friction additive.

Chrysler puts the Pennzoil Sy. Euro. form 5-40 in my XF. No probs. They claim that it keeps the engine cleaner in the long run, and it IS approved for use in MB engines. Only 35,000. on the dial as of this writing.

I'm still using 0-40w Mobil 1. I've toyed with changing several times but decided it was foolish with no test data on the Mobil 1. So I sent a sample to Blackstone labs and it came back excellent. I change my oil twice a year no matter the mileage because of the abuse and heat I subject my engine to. No doubt other oils are adequate. I recommend having your used oil tested. That way your not depending on second hand/word of mouth/buy my stuff and make me rich advertising BS. It costs a few dollars and dirty hands but the satisfaction of knowing is worth it.

I had Blackstone test oil from both Crossies @ 10,000 miles twice and all results were excellent. No worries here using Liqui Moly.

On another note, wouldn't mind trying this brand out... looks intriguing from the test! Problem is that it's seems to be available only in Australia. M/B 229.5 rated.
