Engine flutter? Normal?
Re: Engine flutter? Normal?
the click noise just after the throttle starts in those videos is the noise fo the s/c clutch engaging. we noticed the c3 pulley made a much more noticable engagement than the oem s/c pulley did. im not hearing an issue further up in the rpm band from there in the video though.

MjGroves:
Your description fits the noise I'm hearing to the T I think. I've tried to figure this out for a while now. I have 21k miles on my SRT and all stock. It's hard to duplicate, but I can get the car to do it maybe 50% of the time if I "try"... at low rpms that is. Kinda like a blow off valve on turbo noise but not really actually, it's more low pitch compared to a blow off valve.
I hope its normal since I've kinda gave up pursuing it, unless forum members think differently.

Every time I've asked, people look at me like I'm crazy. I think it's just the natural sound of the V6, more specifically the FUEL INJECTORS. My SRT6 is still stock, and I hear it.
It annoys me, because it sounds like something is messed up. If you find anything, let me know.
EDIT: One more thing, I noticed that the fluttering becomes more frequent (gets faster and faster) as the RPMs increase, up to the point where the engine noise from the higher RPMs cancels out the fluttering and you can't hear it anymore. I hear it the most when I'm passing someone without pressing the gas much.

99' Dakota R/T Exhaust Leak at driver's side header - Most likely gasket is just completely bad from header bolts working their way out....

Took the xfire in for transmission leak service, also mentioned the engine fluttering problem. Mechanic said he has test driven a few xfires and said everything sounded NORMAL to him during a test drive. Satellite, keep us posted if any of your maintenance "solves" the problem.
Looks like it's just the way our cars sound, though.

I may have already mentioned this before, but it is absolutely ONLY when the S/C engages, I can finally confirm this. In fact, that hesitation that everyone talks about is right when the flutter will start. It will give a little "burst" of flutter with the hesitation, and then from there on out you can hear it. Neutral revs, or below about 2k RPMs...smooth as silk.
I think I might try putting the stock pulley back on and seeing if it hear or feel anything noticeable besides less power...

Pullies would be my next guess.
Re: Engine flutter? Normal?
Can someone make a quality video with the sound?
I'm betting it's simply the sound of the screws starting to compress air, remember as soon as the supercharger starts spinning it has to compress a standing column of air. The lysholm's compress air in the case as opposed to eatons which make pressure in te intake manifold, not the supercharger case itself.

Absolutely.
I was using a ZOOM H4n which is a pretty nice unit for simply recording. The problem is getting it online with out crazy compression and loss of quality.
I'll try some other options for recording.
Thanks to everybody putting up with this thread. I'm sure it's getting to be a little ridiculous...chasing a phantom sound...but its there!
Re: Engine flutter? Normal?
Hope nobody is upset I brought up an old thread, but I have the same sound in my SRT-6 with 33k miles. It's pretty annoying and hard to describe, the bicycle reference was pretty good though. I can only hear it when accelerating quickly, usually hear it most around 1800-3500rpm. Sounds like an older car or truck, not a new high HP vehicle.

Do you have the stock sc pulley or any other performance mods?
I'm still pretty set on it being the sc pulley bearing, but I've been messing with my truck and home issues as of recently and haven't got back to this.
In relation to this issue a while back I had this noise upon starting the car, went away after warming up, but this makes me really think it's the supercharger bearing. I'm having trouble getting the YouTube video to embed...so here it is...(PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THIS IS NOT THE NOISE I HEAR ALL THE TIME, JUST MORE EVIDENCE THAT IT MAY BE THE SC PULLEY BEARING): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN7AwhNDAUk

Wow, that sounds awful. To me, that sounds like a failed bearing scratching
through the races. Also, towards the end of the video, you have a good
shot of the Super Charger pulley. Maybe it's just my eyes, but it seems to
be spinning with an ocillation. BTW, is that the normal retaining lock
washer on the front of the Super charger? Really looks like it has been
bent a bit my pressure from the bolt. Could just be an optical illusion, but
the way it looks sure ain't how mine looks when it is running.
On the "flutter" you've been experiencing, probably not it, but I recall
several years ago a friend of mine had a similar sound coming from his
Mustang when his super charger would engage. Turned out to be that
his belt was a little loose, and was flapping/slapping on the pulley when
it first engaged.
Good luck,
Coyote
Re: Engine flutter? Normal?
check the metal clips that attach the pulley to the magnetic backing. there were some m/b threads about the rivets becoming loose and elongating the holes that the meatl clips are attached with. this could be making the noise your hearing as it engages the magnetic clutch

that bearing is toast. dont drive the car until you get it fixed, the damage it can cause will be 3 times as costly. be aware if you have an extended warrenty they wont fix the bearing but replace the entire s/c! if not the bearing is 50$ from hpautowerks and can be done in 30 minutes if you have a press
lastly the idler pulley next to the s/c and below is junk. i would suggest you ask rob at needswings to to make you a c3 pulley saver kit. it will cure all the idler bearing failures you are going to experience. adds a bit of beltwrap also
