Hopefully making the plunge soon...
Graduating in a week, looks like a job is right around the corner and after 6 years of lusting over this car, it looks like I may be able to finally buy one. I've been doing some research around the forums the past 2 days and had two questions... What kind of maintenance costs am I looking at with an SRT-6? Now I understand that the car is a Mercedes, so I'm assuming it's not going to be very cheap. One thing I've been reading about is oil changes, how expensive are we talking here? Also, I'm looking for a car with 50,000 miles or less, what kind of prices seem fair for coupes with that mileage? $15k? I hope I can join you guys soon, I test drove a Crossfire in 2004 and I never really thought I'd be possibly be buying one, one day.
Re: Hopefully making the plunge soon...
Hi there, and welcome to the forum!
Maintenance costs depend on how much maintenance you are comfortable doing yourself. If you can handle doing your own oil changes, that will help quite a bit as they are the most common maintenance. The oil changes on Crossfires are quite easy. The oil filter is accessible from the top of the engine unlike most other cars. There is a skid plate that needs to be removed from the bottom of the car to drain the oil, but that is just 5 bolts. If you have ramps, that eliminates the need to jack the front of the car up.
The biggest cost with an oil change is the price of the oil itself. Synthetic Mobil 0w-40 is recommended, and it costs anywhere from $5 to $8 per quart, and the engine needs 8 quarts. The good German-made fleece filters cost about $15 each. So just in oil change consumables you are looking at $80 plus. Most dealers will charge well over $100 for the oil change assuming they are using the correct oil. If they quote a cheaper price, they probably aren't using synthetic oil.
You should be able to find a clean SRT-6 coupe with under 50k miles for $15k. The lower the miles, the higher the price. Be prepared to travel nationwide for the best deals and cleanest, low-mileage cars. I drove 9 hours to buy my roadster in February.
Best wishes in your search!

Re: Hopefully making the plunge soon...
Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I've been doing some hunting on Autotrader and found 2 nice ones around 2 hours away, so not too bad at all. I am prepared to travel far and wide if I have to though for the best deal. I adore these cars and I'm looking for the one that best fits what I've been looking for the past few years. As for doing the maintenance on my car myself, I'm pretty comfortable with that notion. I own an 05 WRX and have done some of the work on it myself and with friends, so it's something I don't mind tackling whether it's oil changes or changing the spark plugs, etc...
Re: Hopefully making the plunge soon...
I was actually looking through his thread earlier today and all the modifications he's done. Very bad *** Crossfire, but I'm looking for an unmodified one as I'd eventually want to modify it and do the work myself. I like to learn about the cars I have and modifying them myself helps with that process of learning. As for one that fits me best, I'm mainly looking for either a black or graphite SRT-6 (although I would still take it any other color), and preferably one with less than 50,000 miles on it. I'd be willing to drive a few hours for one.
Re: Hopefully making the plunge soon...
Welcome---I looked for over a year and just bought one with 917 miles for $19,655. There's one in Hollywood, FL asking $18,000 but it is said on here that it is able to be bought for $16,500 with 7500 miles on it----IF it's a clean and not sold, that car is a DEAL!!!! If you can step up a couple of thousand to $17,000 or so, you will do yourself a big favor in the long run. Maintenance is not the big cost with these or any car these days---it's the repairs. Some parts are not that bad being; the cost is near that of most cars. Others on the other hand (i.e. the supercharger) are big money new or even rebuilt, and used are still up there since the numbers are limited. Good luck!!!!
