It's a good idea and the big players with the E55's have added this same setup in the trunk with a custom aluminum tank that has a separate compartment for the ice. They even have a drain installed underneath the trunk to empty the water from the ice out after each run. Moparrbust has this mod in the trunk. I'm sure he posted pics of it. Same idea as yours, but they basically have a larger intercooler in the middle of the aluminum tank. Custom and not cheap but very effective. Even have a 2nd pump installed. Search mbworld for Chiromikey. If there are pics it has to be from a couple of years back. The company he uses for all his custom work, even headers is Floored Fabrication here in AZ. Good luck. I personally don't use any cooling mods. Haven't needed them yet.

sorry for reviving somewhat of an old post....

but has anyone made their own and has pictures of their set-up?

Ive been having issues with my SC shutting down and I already have a Johnson CM30 so I think it may have something to do with my IAT's and this is supposed to lower it.....correct?

oh yeah, and Im new, so hello everyone haha

junk product.

Make sure your johnson is indeed running and bleed the system to make sure you don't have any air trapped

junk product?

the system is supposed to get the air bubbles out itself isn't it? Also, I have just recently started having this problem, while I have had my pump on for over a year. The pump hasn't been touched, so I doubt air got in there.

I have no codes, fuse is fine, a working IC pump, and once again NO CODES. I'm running out of ideas as to what it could be

First off, welcome!

Here are a few threads with custom IC tanks:

As for your symptoms, here are a few thoughts:

1. Your CM30 could be going bad. I vaguely remember some talk about them failing.
2. Your IAT sensor might be bad.
3. Your OAT sensor might be bad.

Have you separated the IC cooling circuit from the engine coolant? The third thread I listed has some good info from member BrianBrave.

Do you have a datalogger to read the IAT?

Thumpers post above has some good information. The C3 reservoir isn't worth the cash.

Nope, they don't self bleed. Lots of people say they do, but not the case. Proven many, many times over. There is a small outlet at the top of the cooling circuit near the left radiator hose with a small rubber cap on it. Let the car run and in neutral rev it up a bit to get it over 3k (or make sure johnson is running)

unplug that cap and catch the coolant coming from it. There should be a steady stream coming out, with no bubbles. Let it do that for a few seconds (or until bubbles are gone) and recap it.

Is there a Heat Exchanger on the car? Look at the front of the car near the bottom grill and you should be able to see if the HE was replaced with an aftermarket one. If not do that.

I have seen johnsons fail as well. After you shut down the car the pump will run for 3-4 seconds. Check to be sure it is still doing that.

Talking Re: Code Three Performance Intercooler Reservoir

Back in the day when I fabbed up the super cooler, I did not add an additional tank and have been street and track driving it for a bout 2+years. The expansion is very minimal as the fluid does not heat up that much and the air at the top of the cooler is enough to adsorb the 'extra' fluid.

I want to suggest that yall read my posting about going to a +20 degree antifreeze mixture to have more water content and about 20% more heat transfer capacity. In my garage it never gets to 20 when VA gets into the single digits and - temps overnight. At least for the summer more water does the trick as long as you add rust preventative/ water pump additive. Below 50% antifreeze can promote rusting of steel surfaces.

WOODY, enjoy

It could be a faulty IAT Temp sensor. Could be bad or perhaps just coated/oiled with blow by.

Simple way you can test it - is to swap it with the OAT sensor on the lower driverside grill.

Remove the IAT sensor and plug it in to the OAT sensor plug and read the outside temp on your dash. Carefully use a heat gun to see if temp reading changes.

Gently clean with carb cleaner if needed.
