Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
There are 2 variables you need to consider, which air intake FLOWS better and which intake can hold a larger VOLUME of air. The question here is does the car react better to better flow or more volume of air, my bet is more volume thats why I'm going to try out the stock boxes combined with dual pods.
Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
My logic is the ram air effect of the SL55 intake. I love the needswings dual set up, it looks amazing and I know it will flow well, but I find it hard to think that it will out flow the SL55 set up like mine once the car is moving. The needswings will always be sucking in air and making the 90 degree bend from the front of the radiator to the engine compartment. At 60, 80, dare I say 100mph, I will be forcing a lot of air into my intake just by the shear velocity of the car moving. The single needswing and the stock SL55 dyno’d the same with no assistance of the moving car and I have not seen any numbers from the dual. At the end of the day, they both are a huge improvement over stock!
Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
I installed the SL55 over two years ago after reading a write up from a member on one of the MB Boards. ATthe time no one had installed the SL55 on a SRT6 (or at least wrote it up on the forum) so I took the chance.
At first a few members made some comments - but I liked the idea of installing authentic AMG V8 components on my engine for around $300. Plus it retained the dual intake.
The before and after dyno results showed fantastic gains and soon I installed the 185mm pulley and got a dyno tune and the SL55 intake back it all up and I've never looked back.
Had the Dual NW been available back then - I probably would have purchased a set.. Even more so now that they run with the larger filters. But I also like the fact that with the SL55 setup my radiator receives full unrestricted airflow and with the SO CAL weather, that turns out to be a plus.
The only other mod to my SL55 setup has been a set of K&N filters (that stay remarkably clean) and paint and clear coat to the airboxes.

Brian,
The TVT tubes and NW devil horns would look sooooooo good in that engine bay...and maybe pick up a bit more air with the horn/scoops. You could do just the horns on your setup too..
I put the SL55 setup on the SSB after installing the NW dual on the Aero. Now I am thinking that the SSB might need a tune to use all that air and maybe get better mileage....
..maybe I should turn down my SC pulley.... .... good thing I am keeping the SSB stock...

Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
I took my lead from BB with the SL55 setup believing the dual setup flowed more than the single CAI. I provided the dyno numbers comparing the three setups available at that time, BDJ, NW and SL55 intakes on a stock car. They were pretty much even, except the SL55 cost less than the other two.
I also took part in a dyno session were a NW style intake and SL55 intake ran on the same car on the same day. The NW style did three pulls first and then the SL55 was placed on the car while it remained strapped to the dyno. The result was, the SL55 dyno’d 5 rwhp more than the NW style.
That is what prompted me to ask NW for help in improving the SL55 setup.
SL55 Hybrid
MikeR, I would be willing to sponsor some funds if you did a dyno comparison on the two setups.
Anyone else .......

Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
What about using something like this in the intake?: BMC CARBON DYNAMIC ARIBOX | AIR FILTERS | AIR FILTER | car - bike - high performance - racing
Used with or without filters? You could use it with a needswings style intake with the filters installed, a ram air setup with shielding from the engine comparment heat. Or you could use it for additional volume without the filter as suggested in this thread.

Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
Well I needed more than the the perfect intake this morning. I have coffee on Saturday morning with a group of guys who like to "play" a bit after the caffine wakes everyone up. I got my a$$ handed to me by a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V with a CAI and a Tune, then to make it worse, a C63 with a renntech tune was able to pull me too.
I guess I should not take it too bad...both these V8s are 500hp +++

Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
I measured the ram effect and at 60 it was a minor fraction of a pound of boost. A gain, but not significant as the ram air gto crowd would like to hear. My dual cai design was capable of reducing the inlet restriction at full throttle by 1 psig as demonstrated on the dyno tests way back ago. Woody
Re: The endless pursuit of the perfect intake…
I will have to "agree to disagree" with Hurricane and Waldig. When I stick my hand out the window at 20,40,60mph...I feel a whole bunch of air ramming my hand.
Anyway, not that he needs another guy on his band wagon, but I wanted to give a public THANK YOU to Rob @ Needswings. I needed a few little parts from him to make my SL55 intake set up work and not only did he make the pieces for me, he sold them to me at a very reasonable price.
He is a stand up guy and an asset to this forum and our cars!
