Default Supra Killed

Tonight i was minding my own business when a nice looking white supra started being aggressive behind me, so never being shy of a race i accelerated past one car to switch lanes so he could come up beside me. I downshifted into 2nd and waited for him to go for it.. We started at around 30mph i was very very slightly pulling to about 50mph and then it was all over once he did his gear change i pulled a few car lenghts in no time. Next set of lights i asked what he has done and he replied saying it was BPU. Ive now raced 3 supras the last being a 310whp sup which i had a fair few runs from a dig and roll and it wasnt even close. I really dont understand i mean right now i would have around the 330hp mark, thats only 20hp more but the difference was huge.

The most exciting race with a supra i have had was a month or two ago. I saw his car from a distance as we pulled up to a set of lights that would soon merge into one. I tried to dig race him but he was having none of that (probably didnt know i was keen even though i was aggressive getting to the lights) but after i launched hard i caught his attention. So after merging into one i had slowed down and i saw him catch up, i slowly went full throttle to make sure the timing was more or less on par. The first 'run' from 30 to about 70 had nothing in it, i wasnt able to lose him nor was he able to catch me. I was impressed (not often do i have a car be able to keep up with me) We got to a round about and both turned left (stil one lane) so i go for it again and he does too.. this time we get to about 80-90mph and i noticed he was slowly making ground from 75 before i slowed down. Later that night i was looking up supras and decided to try my luck and put in his plates WTF Supra in google and to my suprise he had a thread on his car. This guy has a 500whp sup using a single 40z turbo i. I was shocked DO they just suffer too much from turbo lag? Where as our cars get instant response. I get the impression a 330whp SRT6 will beat a 330whp supra? Im sure in the 1/4 he would smoke me some where after 60mph but street racing and drag racing are two different things. Needless to say i was pretty proud of my car and it made me realise how great these AMG engines really are!

supras are great...................if your into roll racing. Every one i have ever seen has a honda vtec powerband. they have nothing the first 4000 to 5000 rpms then all the power hits. Horrible narrow powerbands. That is why you see 1200whp supras running high 11's or low 12's all the time lol.

You should get a tune on your car asap, it will make a big difference. you will feel just as big of a power increase as you did when you added the pulley if not more.

Thats a false statement Mrphotoman. I was in Okinawa for a year. Maybe the guys in the US dont know how to tune. As much as I love my crossfire I hate to say take one over their and u might leave it due to the embarassment of all the thrashings you will receive. Not JMO its facts. Japense know how to tune their cars.

Like I said above, every supra i have ever seen has a narrow powerband and does not run the times they should as a result.

I do not benchrace or do the "well my friends sisters neighbor has a aunt that lived in an apartment that had a car park beside her that once was at a car lot that sat beside a car that was next to another car that drove past a car that could have ran 3's in the 1/4 mile if they had time to take it to the track". I quit doing that when I was 14 years old.

Sure there are fast supras out there, any car can be made fast if you have enough $. Supras are good cars, I just do not care for them personally because they are every ricers wet dream just like honda civics are lol.

Again, every one I have ever seen or raced did not run the times it should because of horrible turbo lag. It is a running joke on the net about supras and roll racing. It is a well known issue, a lot of turbo cars have that issues. Some do not, some do.

Every turbo car that I have raced has wanted to go from a roll. SRT-4's, Supra's, WRX's all have the same issues with turbo lag and powerband. So far only a Supra has been able to take me, and I am looking for him to do a rematch now that I have modded a bit more, .

These are some good kills, but I have driven and seen some FAST Supras out there that will put a hurtin' on ya...

I'm here in MA visiting my buddy who has 4 Supras in the garage 3 MKIV's and 1 MKIII (the Pinks winner)... The 'slow' MKIV only has a boost controller, exhaust and MT DR tires. It consistantly runs 11.7 - 12.0 1/4 mile. I'd have to guess these guys are closer to stock or have poor tuning skills.

Stock Supras ARE rated lower than the XF:
Jap spec @ ~ 276hp
US/Euro @ ~ 320hp

As far as turbo lag. The dual stock setup is not too bad as the small primary spools the secondary. The big single conv has a good deal of lag, but once it comes alive... bu-bye.

The 2 that I've driven this week:
The 87 MKIII (7M motor / not a 2Jz conv) - YouTube - 943
The 94 MKIV w/ single turbo conv - YouTube - First full gt42r pass 26lbs

BTW, we just strapped N2O on the blue one this weekend. A small burst from 32-4100 rpm to spool the turbo and a 100 shot on the top end. Felt really good on the street, can't wait to see what it does at the track now!

there was one that is always at PRP when i race and he runs low 13's at 110 or so mph lol.

when i was in VA this guy had his supra trailered to the 1/8 mile track and his "team" pushed it out to the staging lanes for him. he even had a hole cut in his hood to keep his turbo cool lol. Well his team helped him strap in and put on his helmet. they pushed his car to the front of the staging lane till it was his turn. he started the car after a few tries, staged and ran a blistering 9.88@79mph lmao. then his "race team" pushed him back to the staging lanes for another terrifying run. True story, happened when i ran last year against my friends evo. i posted the videos on here somewhere of me racing the evo. sadly the gf did not get the supra team on video

his team consisted of 3 teenage guys and a chubby teenage girl lol. They were serious as could be the entire time too.

mt buddy has a mark IV supra with an sp59 turbo (obviously single, no longer sequential). has full exhaust, intake. stock ic though. his car dynos 480 and is stupid fast. his power band is from about 3800 (it isnt a big turbo) and maxes out at i believe 6800. If he does NOT brake boost, he plays major catch-up (eventually catches me). And if he shifts too soon, his powerband is wasted.

A properly driven single turbo supra will own just about any srt6, c32, or slk32 minus perhaps that one running 10s because of that shot of nitrous

and i'm just gonna throw this out there: i'd trade my car in in an instant for a Mark IV supra....even a stock one ....ok let flame war on me begin lol

I think for street applications they really do need a smaller turbo to minimize lag something like the GT35 possibly even smaller, i believe they get boost at 2k and full boost by 3500rpm. For a car that was built in 1993 with kit and rims they still look amazing plus they are bullet proof engines, classic car really. When you race your mate how many cars do you pull on him and by what speed does he take you?

when he drives it properly and brake boosts, and doing say, a roll from top of second, i get an initial jump and about half car while he is in relatively low boost....but once he hits full boost through 6800 rpms, he gets that back and then a couple cars. i believe he is only seeing 17 or 18 psi.

i'll see if i can get some videos. he will be at Evan's (cruizinquick) track event on December 19th and will be able to get some videos of it then as well

So true- years ago when I had my....*don't laugh* Hyundai Tiburon, a Supra pulled up to me at a light. It was one of those lights where the lane merged after the intersection. I figured what the heck- I my as well try. Well I did my best launch I could (w/ 140hp) and actually lunged forward ahead of him. By the time the lanes merged he was by my side and had to back off and file in behind me.

Let me tell you- he...was...pissed! He flashed his brights at me and proceeded to ride my bumper for the next mile or so. Needless to say I was blown away that the Supra didn't kill me from the dig. I chalked it up to turbo lag- which, in retrospect, was probably the case. That and he probably didn't think the cheesy Hyundai was going to try him.

No flames, heck- I would too. Problem is finding one that is in good shape. They stopped production in the late 90's so most of them have way to many miles and have been beat to hell.
